Didnt see anywhere else in the catalog to post this.

I am looking for a DD between $2-$4k, and I have two cars in particular nearby. One is a 2000 Altima GXE for $3k, with 80k miles, the other is a 2004 Volvo S60 2.4t, with 111k, for $3.5k

I am more interested in the s60, but I am wondering about the reliability, and if parts are any cheaper than newer model volvos and other euros, due to the age? And anything I should look for specifically in it? Any help is appreciated.

Damn that altima is an absolute steal, volvo is probably nicer though. If I were you I'd snatch up that Nissan, given that I know virtually nothing about volvo. Given that it is a turbo though, expect to have to buy premium fuel, and keep in mind you might have factory turbo problems down the line

On the volvo look for worn parts that are going to need replacing soon.

Check the mounts, check the suspension parts (strut tops, bushings, etc).

Generally reliable but make sure you keep up with maintenance.

Yeah, and the altima has a 1 year 12k mile warranty from the dealership. But damned if Im not drawn towards the volvo. 200hp and a turbo is pretty alluring.

I owned a 1.8t audi for a while, so Ive dealt with turbos a little bit before.

I'm pretty sure that's a Ford-era Volvo, so parts shouldn't be too difficult to come by.
Never really heard horror stories about Volvo reliability either.

Yeah, I had a 97 850 wagon for a while and it was pretty good, considering that when I changed the oil on it, it was literal sludge. Never missed a beat.

And now that I look at KBB and Edmunds, the Altima seems like its not so much of a steal. In fact its actually a little bit higher than even what KBB puts it at.

My main worry with the volvo is if theyre known for ridiculous electrical problems like a lot of the euro cars of that era (saab and VW come to mind).

I had a buddy that owned a 2001 Volvo S40, I don't remember all the small details but I think we were going to replace the headgasket we needed a 1,000 special tool to take off the lifters and no local shops would rent it to us. So we just scrapped it.
