can someone explain something simple to me?
supposedly, f1 engines need to be heated up in order to start because otherwise the pistons would be too tight in the bore and cause damage...
if I'm not mistaken metal expands when it's heated up so would the piston not expand when heated up and fit even tighter than when cold?

I'm guessing it's actually for the metal to expand enough to have the piston rings seal properly, rather than because of fucking up the walls. Whoever explained it to you probably fucked up

It no doubt has something to do with metalergy, and very tight tolerances that mean the bore must expand a certain amount during the trip from ambient temperature to peak operating temperature.
