bimmer 525i 1995 piece of crap I know ok stop telling me about it

The radio is fucked. I can enter in the ECU code (because it wont even turn on after battery change.) I dial the volume and it makes some speakers short out when dialing. I can hit bridges, go over railroad tracks etc with np, only when touching the dial
Time to retire the oem bmw radio? I hate too... but if thats what is needed then I guess you gotta do what you gotta do
>>
>>14682881
To elaborate; the left side stays on all the time, the right drivers side (usa) shorts out when dialing the volume.

nowhere else, even with bumps

sounds electrical.
>>
>>14682881
I'll give you $1250 for it
>>
>>14682881
Speakers are probably shot, just get a new system or deal with it.

If you get a new system you'll have to run new wires, you won't be able to use the old ones.

Shoulda bought a 540 tho.

>piece of crap I know
other than the small displacement engine it's fine, I don't know who's been giving you shit
>>
>>14685395
Fucking this. Those cars are easy to maintain and and very reliable.
>>
>>14682881
>Time to retire the oem bmw radio?
It's the cheapest but you devalue the car by a lot.
>>
>>14685537
gee, man watch out it might be worth 1000 dollars now instead of 1100. Nobody cares about those sort of things apart from serious spergs.
>>
>>14685537
>removing broken cardboard factory sound system devalues the car

Are you hipster trash?

I had a thread a few days ago asking why it dies at stop signs after its been warmed up. It restarts fine but as soon as I go from P to R or D it dies. If I can somehow get it into R or D without it dying, then as soon as a give it a little throttle it dies. I had to limp home in Mountain drive gear 1. I'm thinking its the O2 sensor or the ICV (Idle control valve).

Probably gonna take it back to the mech tomorrow. I'm getting pretty frustrated with it at this point.

If it werent for these problems, I'd love the car, but it's embarrassing to not be able to get it past a stop sign and have to turn on emergency blinkers and wave people past you. They cackle like hyenas because Im in a bimmer.

Sucks to drive around for more than 30 mins because of this problem.
>>
>>14687366
err it wasnt mountain drive I was able to somehow get it into sport mode gear 1 without it dying (it tried to) it got me past the last stopsign and got me home thankfully.

These cars auto in E (economy) drive, and you can either shift it into M (Manual - Mountain Drive) or S (Manual - Sport 1-2-3 shifter)

Any suggestions are welcomed, I thought about maybe cleaning the ICV but where these are mostly electronic I don't exactly want to spray a bunch of carb cleaner on something that might mess up or short out.

No check engine codes, lights off, "stomp test" yields no codes.
>>
>>14685395
A lot of people told me on my thread that I need to just sell it asap while it's running at least.

The problem is it kelley blue books for like 1500 and Ive already dropped 1700 USD in it.

I'd like to get SOME miles out of it before trading in... it's only at 163k miles which is rather low for this model
>>
>>14687366
>take it back to the mech
Why don't you fix it yourself? It would be a lot cheaper and probably more successful.
>>14687393
>spray a bunch of carb cleaner on something
That's not how you do it. You remove the ICV and clean it and it's port with a solvent rag. Best if you are able to clean out the intake manifold and throttle body too.

First of all, the mechanic is at our local technology trade-skill school, hes ASE certified and he shows students how to diagnose and learn problems so I'm helping him out as a friend in a way . also it's totally free aside from parts.

The ICV Valve on my car (525i with M50 engine) is incredibly notorious about being hard to get to. You have to reach up underneath the engine with a snake arm fashion and cut yourself all up in the process. Yes I have a jack but at the tradeschool they have actual automotive lifts. I'd like for them to maybe check that ICV and if its gunked up, clean it, put it back in.... then if it STILL has problems, replace the ICV.

The stupid O2 sensor for this is like 150 bucks.

I get to take advantage of his ASE certified mech discount at part stores, so thats why I prefer him to look at it if it has to have something replaced.

I am thinking its the O2 sens or ICV valve. Wouldn't make sense that the MAF is bad because then it would idle weird even cold (which it doesnt)

Any other thoughts on what it could be? These ideas I came up with by reading the bentley bmw manual that the previous owner gave with the car. it's the factory service manual but made by a third party (like haynes)

>mechanic is at our local technology trade-skill school, hes ASE certified
How many times has he looked at the car?
>>

>ayy lmao guyz I bought a BMW for 1000$ what a deal right guyz? BMW is the definition of luxery, a real MANS car. they're high quality and I get all the pussy in one right? wow and for only 1000$! good thing I know absolutly nothing about cars and only care about what people think of me driving my shitty broken overpriced German trash that will cost 4x what I paid for it to repair it every year! epic!

why are there so many people on this board that should have had parental supervision when purchasing their car?
>>
>>14687653
we took it to him originally for a transmission problem. My dad and I replaced the front and rear seal in our yard with a harbor freight jack (hard as fuck, had to unbolt the whole exhaust and shit) it was STILL leaking, so we took it to the guy to look at , he looked it over for cracks and suggested it may be the front pump oring, which sure enough, he was right- I took the tranny to my friend who has specialized in trans for over 30 years, and he repped all the orings and shit including that front pump seal one.

Took trans back down to ASE mech at tech school and had them put it back in - like I said they have a lift and its a lot easier than busting my balls on my back in the yard.

They put the trans back in, it doesnt leak at all now. holding fluid 100%, shifts like new.

Its just some sensor in the EFI that's causing this warm-idle-dying issue

I drove 1994 toyota celica gt for 10 years, and I don't give a fuck about luxury. stop projecting

I'm not bragging, this is a 95 dude. it's over 20 years old. just stop.
>>
>>14687678
also I got it for free... so idk what you're on about.
>>
>>14687706
>I got it for free
Just think if you had parted it instead of trying to fix it, you'd probably have made $1,000 by now with more to come.
>>
>>14687695
How many times will that trade school fix a car per year?

Nice work OP, finally a beemer faggot with some brains.
>>
>>14688817
It was a family members and they couldn't afford to fix it up because they came into a down-time in finances, I took it over to save it from turning into a rust bucket.
>>
>>14692563
>couldn't afford to fix it
I thought you said the work was free except for parts.
>>
>>14692668
she cant afford the parts. she bought a 90's jeep and uses that now. cheaper to work on and better for her in her situation
>>
>>14687366
Dude I have similar problem on 520 but with manual. If you find out the cause, tell me pls.
>>
>>14685395
>>14687408

I work at a European Garage. These shit heaps are not reliable in the slightest. The owners that come in for scheduled maintenance that have over 200k mi have already spent a couple thousand in new wiring harnesses/transmissions. Most of the 90's bimmers suffer from electrical gremlins because BMW stopped quality control in the 80's.

OP, they're not reliable. Stop letting the fanboys convince you to further own a money pit.

Most likely ICV valve or O2 sensor. These sensors do not complain to ECU until engine has gotten to a certain temp.

>>14693150
funny Im on the e34 group on facebook and they have stock models with 350.000+ mi

Not discrediting you, but I am confused at this point. I hear one side of the story then another.

Im taking it to ASE mech and have him look at it at least then we are drawn away from stipulations.
>>
>>14693121
>>14693121
Also I must stress; this problem happens to the 525 530 520 etc.. Manual vs automatic doesnt matter.
>>
>>14693177
Ask them if they had any work done to them. Good chances are they'll tell you "nah man I haven't done a thing to it all original everything!" when they dumped a pretty penny into keeping it running. Or they say minor cheap fixes may come up. I'd say the cut-off for investing into the car is $3k. More then that, then you'll have a money pit.
>>
>>14693222
Cant get intouch with prev owners aside from family. there were 3 owners (according to carfax) some fucking dumb ass pulled in too far on a parking spot and dented in the tront a little bit. I corrected it but aside from that I have no other info,
>>
>>14693177
Thanks for info, cheers
