My friend Jeff wants to buy an old 944 because it's the only Porsche he can afford. What are better options?

Tell Jeff to get a Miata.
>>
Protip: if he can only afford a used 944 he can't actually afford a used 944.

Maybe an s platform or an e30.

He could just buy any wrecked porsche, so he could have a boxster and such
>>
Rx7.
>looks almost the same
>easier to wrench on
If he can deal with lol apex seals it's s good choice

Why can't he afford 924?
Better options? Saab 900 turbo if he needs more space. But 944 is nice.

Tell Jeff an unfucked 944 isn't a bad car, but he's gonna get rekt by maintenance
>>
>>14679244
Literally anything else he can afford
944 Is a nice car, but it's a garage queen. If he can't afford a more expensive car, he can't afford a 944.

This is best option, rx7 with a rotary delete and a pushrod insertion.

Tell Jeff to do it! He will learn German cars very fast. Or he will become broke. Or both.
I've owned one and it was one of my favorite cars. I'm thinking about buying another soon.

I hope Jeff likes spending money.

Tell Jeff this;

1. He won't be able to afford a 944 in mint condition. The ones that are are too expensive to buy.

2. He will be able to find one that has zero rust.

3. He will find a weekend track car.

4. A daily driver will likely have a worn out interior.

5. The engines are bomb proof except for timing belt. Timing belt should be the first thing he replaces.

6. Manual shift will have a weaker area around the firewall attachment point. It will need to be rewelded.

7. The heater control valves will be suffering plastic rot and will need to be replaced.

8. The rear hatch will most likely be de laminating from the attachment points. It's a pain in the ass to fix.

9. The AC system likely will be broken due to the compressors being 30 years old.

10. The power steering rack will leak like a sieve.

That said, Jeff will find that the car is nimble very fast and more car than most people can competently drive. Cost wise, the more you drive it the cheaper it costs to run. These cars hate to sit still. They do not do well sitting in a driveway.

Mpg and emission wise it's a good car. Safety wise they are comparatively steel tanks compared to today's plastic body cars.

I owned a 1979 924 and currently own a 1992 968. So pretty much the first to the last in the series. Both are epic fun. I've driven pretty much all the Porsches from the mid 1980's to today's models. These 944 cars are not modern cars. They don't have all the bells and whistles that the current cars have. That being said- they are indeed a Porsche in every sense of the word and are worth owning.

I think that you have to aim at used cars that are in decent condition only, so you would be able to keep in that good shape without any massive restorations. And I don't think that these cars will get any cheaper so that will be a good investment.
I once dreamed that 924 could be my first car because it seemed like a cool and cheap car. Once I got my drivers license they had become too expensive. So I bought a Saab 900 for the same budget because it's more practical. Still would want to own a 944 one day. Or 928 better but those coast around 10k euros these days. Till I will be able to buy a 10k second car, they will become more expensive.

I think that -85 944 is the best option because of the interior. Same for 85-86 928 because of interior and rear lights.
>>
>>14685692
928 is an insane GT. Issues you will have with those though is the engine itself. It's insanely complex. It's fairly unique. Parts are expensive as hell.

When it goes bad- it's beyond expensive to fix and very few people even know where to begin fixing it. The irony is that in today's $ it would be a six figure car. In its day it was bordering on being a super car.

In a straight line and with enough road, it will get you above 100 mph very quickly. It's honestly not as good as a 944, 968, or 911 of the era in terms of handling.

Interior wise it feels longer leg room wise. But in terms of width it seems more narrow in the cockpit. To be honest I frequently mistake a 928 interior shot for a 968.

Also it will have epic plastic fade on anything other than the cars that were babied since birth. Even the leather ones will see fade. And cracking.... Dash cracking.

I've always liked the 928 on long trips. Never seem to get the leg cramp I suffer in a 944 or 911. It may be because I've only driven automatic 928 cars.
>>
>>14687155
As I look at it, 928 is more like for the looks. That old era feeling.. It's obvious that it won't be bought by someone who struggles with money much or will be worried that it won't be the best handling car.
Maybe when I will be able to buy something like that, it will be close to 996 price. I've heard that 996's value isn't dropping anymore.
