it's not rice paint they're all like that. paint coming off any valve cover usually means neglect cause they only do that when liquids like coolant or oil get on it

yeah but this car isn't 20+ years old yet. i specifically said s2k engine bay btw. just compare it to others. but you are right which is why you should check it out in person. 8k is not bad if you don't mind the aftermarket stuff on it
but the airbag is a (red)flag. unless they painted it for kicks it's most likely crashed
unless you have 3-4K to restore it don't buy it.

This, every new part on the car means something old was broken. At the very least this car wasn't well taken care of, which would explain the lower price.
IMO worth checking out, but bring someone who can help you find the real problems.
I wouldn't go for this s2k for pretty much every reason other than the valve cover, that flaking isn't uncommon, especially on AP1s.
