They're illegal in DC too. That being said, certain models are undetectable by cops (so the only way they'd be able to tell you were using one would be to pull you over and see it in the car).
The fine for having a radar detector is about $150 in Virginia, and the officer is supposed to write down the serial of the radar detector and give it back to you before he leaves.

This is a very good radar detector, has saved me countless times but the laser detection is more like "you're gonna get pulled over" light.
The Valentine One plus a good laser jammer will keep you out of trouble, I have both and have jammed laser successfully plus now I use the waze app since the last ticket I got was from a speed monitoring aircraft.
