My parents are putting $2000 ontop of my $3000 to get me a car if I decide to move back home and commute to school.
My pap says it has to be at least from 2000, and reliable. He mentioned for some reason that he can get a leaf for 7.5g, so he probably wouldnt be ok with anything too sporty.
Any suggestions? This would be my first car. I'm reading the sticky rn. I like wagons and there are a few here in the seattle area on craigslist, but im open to anything.

why are civics so expensive used? Do they live forever or something?

Mazda 3
Buy a Silverado.
>>14671135
cant believe how cheap these are
>>14671128
thanks, a good option
>>14671147
well, it is kinda sporty, but it's past 2000 so it might work.
>>14671143
I used to drive the family suburban around way back in hs, shit was super fun. Tow package 1999 burbon.
I think i'd need a smaller car b/c commuting and gas mileage but thank you for the suggestion
Serious reply
>manual versa
Had some at a rental lot and they worked pretty well. Otherwise a corolla.
>>14671155
right right, I found one for $5000 flat in the area. Might be too sporty and I'd like to take it to the mountains often so maybe not the best option. Thanks though
>>14671158
I cant seem to find one for under $5000. I forgot to add that I dont know how to drive stick, but Im sure I can pick it up quick
Maybe a Volvo/Subaru wagon or Chevy S10/Ford Ranger truck?
>>14671156
>gas mileage
S10 or Ranger then.
>>14671177
Versa is pretty forgiving. Can pick up a 10 or 11 for around 8k. Approach a rental lot and ask about it. Might be able to get one at auction price if you talk to the owner. Will be just outside warranty.
>>14671178
My friend has a 2004 subaru outback and it has all sorts of issues. He got his for $4000 something and I think he got ripped off. Seattle is subaru-ville so I know I can get parts though.
I like volvo wagons, I'll check them out. Any specific model?
I'm against getting a truck because I'll have to commute quite a ways every day.
>>14671189
Do they really get comparable mpg to a commuter sedan?
>>14671194
Do people do this? I'd assume they put their stuff on craigslist or send directly to a reseller. I'll keep it in mind thank you.
What state you in?
>>14671208
I'm in washington. Seattle area to be more specific
>>14671202
I got a 12 Camry with 35k miles for 13.5. Two years later traded it in for 14.5 at 65k. They sell Camrys for right around 13.5. They can save the auction cost (up to 500 bucks) .
>>14671211
How tall are you? I ask because I have a manual 95 ranger. Single cab with 80k on it.
>>14671225
Hmmm, maybe I should consider putting in some more $$, that is if I can make a profit in the long run. Never thought about buying cars like that...
>>14671231
5'8-9". Are you in washington?
>>14671196
But the small trucks come with 4 cylinder engine options. Check the MPGs for the year/model to see the average city/hwy MPGs.
forgot image. I'd love to drive something like this one day. Lifted sedan thing with fat tires
>>14671251
Right right I forgot about the small ones. I'm only used to the huge 7mpg ones. I'll look into it!
>>14671244
Live down in Eugene, OR. Gave it to my elderly neighbor but he is looking to get rid of it for 2k, maybe less. It has a dent but is pretty well maintained.
Unsure the cost of amtrak or what MPG it gets. Power steering is loud (lel ford) but it has some years left in it.
>>14671196
The lima 2.5 ranger gets around 20. The duratec 2.3 (mazda MZR) gets around 23. About 10 mpg less than your average econobox.
>>14671135
This. 1st gen manual hatchback is GOAT
>>14671263
I'm not an expert, but I found a 96 here in edmonds for $1000 obo

I dont think I'll be down that far south in a long while but thank you for the pitch!
>>14671158
>>14671177
AFAIK Versas are known for being the most boring cars in existence, and not even all that reliable. I'm not sure if older ones are any better though
>>14671290
Not sure if this is 1st gen, or the price really. The hatchback is kinda fugly imo but if it's goat I dont really care about looks
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5497066156.html
>>14671298
Nice thats dirt cheap.
>>14671074
Anything but a Mazda 3 (pic related).
Only get a Mazda 3 if you answer the following questions with a "yes":
>are you a girl?
>do you like to lose?
>do you like over weight under powered shitboxes?
>do you like cheap interiors?
>do you like rust
>are you a cuck?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions the Mazda 3 is the car for you.
If you answered no to those questions,
Get anything else.
>>14671310

any alternative suggestions then?
thoughts on bmw wagons? https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5475683457.html
What about saabs?
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5497391195.html
>>14671310
Good thing Mazda has nothing to do with those questions and a simple Google search shows you're wrong on the specs.
>>14671323
>listening to a shitposter
Compare the Mazda 3 to any other econobox.
Oh right, it IS an econobox. Therefore the differences are minimal because they're all pretty much the same.
Slow
Boring
Cheap
and most important of all
Cheap.
>>14671336
If I find a good deal it's still on my list.
>>14671336
But the Mazda 3 is the best in class
>>14671327
Touring BMWs are dank AF, but BMW Autos are anything but dank. If you're getting a BMW, go manual. You won't regret it.
Saabs are also cool because they're unique, but they're ass to work on. Parts will be harder to find, and labor will be expensive if you don't want to do it yourself.
>>14671327
I'd stay away from them unless you are willing to do your own repair work because otherwise you are going to be throwing a lot of cash down the drain when something eventually goes wrong.
>>14671353
>>14671345
Alright, I'll save the saab for a later time. Thanks
>>14671360
there's literally nothing wrong with saab. I'm sure there are independent saab shops that could do anything major. Everything else could be done by you or any other shop or maybe even a chevy dealer.
I wouldn't get that one though.
>>14671342
>lowest tier shit class
>only car in that class is the Mazda 3

Yeah but Mazda 3 is a girls car dude all I see are moms driving them and car seats in the back.

>>14671122
Reliable as fuck. Timeless as fuck. Fuel efficient as fuck.
Lexus IS300.
Legendary reliability, not a civic.
Good luck finding a wagon though.
Mk4/mk5 jetta or e38 BMW if you can find one for a steal. You'd be better price wise with a mk4 but sometimes you come across some lady with an 06 or 07 jetta her husband drove before he died and wants to just sell the 40k mile beauty for nothing

>>14673816

>>14671074
If you like wagons, get one, most of /o/ will tell you to get certain imports or something but honestly, just get someting you don't have to work on everyday, as someone who was always late because something went wrong with their project car that they drove everyday because it was their only option fo yourself a solid and get a clean stylish (opinion) car that you know won't need any major mantinence for a while, project cars are cool but theyre a pain in the dick to rely on. Mazda wagons have my vote for style but idk about reliability. Do you have a brand preference?
>>14674203
No brad preference as it's my first car. I like the look of the old volvos, but my pap wont put any cash down unless it's after 2000. At this point I'm open to all suggestions, as long as theyre somewhat fun cars
>>14673543
Make sure the belt has been changed already. If not, stay away.
>>14674210
>>14674209
Well Volvos are safe as fuck and pretty commfy so I dont think you could go wrong with a V70 or something, just be sure you judge the owner, if they look like a peice of shit they probably treated their cars like so. Don't forget to run through the whole car either.
>>14674210
thanks, good to know. Here's the mentioned saab https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5490470517.html
>>14674218
Thanks, I'll keep this in mind
Also, this wagon is badass
>>14674228
Is that the gran torino wagon or ranchero?
>>14674182
well, if you have any concept of how cars appreciate you will realise that some cars will retain their value and even increase in value as time goes by, there are many cars you can get which are in that category, none of which are passed the year 2000 to my knowledge, except a few... a decent clean W124 mercedes or 190(W201) are my picks, safe, reliable, timeless classic boxy design, traditionally stylish.
>>14671135
Probably the most fun of the major 4 cylinder shitboxes.
>>14674222
Looks nice. Saab's are worshipped here in Sweden. Safe and reliable as long as service has been done properly and regularly. Stay away from any Saab that have ticking noises from the engine, which indicates that the cylinder head has gone bad due to poor service.
I drive a VW Passat and it's feels like trash compared to Saabs, which feels sturdy as fuck when you drive them.
If not Saab, go for Volvo V70 or Toyota (Corolla, Camry, and Avensis).
Avoid french cars at all costs.
2000 Volvo V70R

Going against the general advice here, but if you're commuting I wouldn't get stick.
>>14671158
Versas are bare minimum shitboxes, I can't see any reason to buy one unless you hate driving
>>14675234
