I love mine, but it's probably the least "metro" out of all the models. It's a 2001 lsi, fastest factory metro with 79 hp but only 26/31 mpgs.

Yes it's a 4-cylinder, never heard anything bad them, but I've never really read much desu. But I take back saying the 2001 lsi is the fastest, didn't know the 4cyl was offered in other years too.

Shitboxes are loved by /o/. We like to say they have character. We beat them to hell, and they somehow still go another 50k miles. When brand new with 4 miles on the odometer, we smugly donned these vehicles "econoboxes". But they matured, such as a fine wine does. They surived to 300k miles with minimal repairs. Just like a soldier earns the Purple Heart, our "econoboxes" earned their reputation as the "shitbox". There are a few cars that will always be known as great little shitboxes: the Toyota Corolla, our beloved Twingo, and America's frontrunner, The Geo Metro.

The Geo Metro was conceived much the same way I was: during a 4am cocaine fueled grope session in the back seat of an AMC Gremlin.

The year was 1987. A few Detroit executives who were down on their luck decided that we need a car designed for real human beans. A car that would love its 8th owner more than its original buyer. A car that had seen 3 oil changes its first 100k miles, but now is pampered by synthetic blend every 2,999 miles. Sunroof? Fuck that! 4 cylinders? Nope! We want 4 wheels, 3 cylinders, 2 doors, and one goddamn good car.

Thus the 1989 Geo Metro was born. It reigned supreme for decades, much like a dictator in Asia. Jay Leno owns 7 Geo Metros in case you forgot. The Geo Metro is the only car to win at Monza, Laguna Seca, Silverstone, and Talladega. Ford and Chrysler appealed to the US government in 1990, saying that production of the Geo Metro created an unfair advantage for GM. Unfortunately for Ford and Chrysler, 98% of the members of Congress drove Geo Metros and loved them to death. The Geo Metro placed 4th in the 1992 Presidential election behind Ross Perot.

Some say the Chevrolet Aveo was the successor to the Geo Metro, but I refuse to believe. Nothing can ever succed over the Geo Metro when it comes to its main purpose: being a spectacular shitbox.
>>
Yaaaay a metro thread
I love my metro, it's like a free car.
They're pretty fragile though, don't floor it unless you want your engine to fall out. Mine also chirps at idle, think it's just because the belt is so tiny. Look for rust, 3 cyl manuals are best. Oil leaks are common... Everything else is cheap and easy.

It's a real shame because this car was a fucking BLAST to drive. It has the 3 cylinder 5 speed and a rusted out muffler. It's slow to accelerate but once you get above 4k rpm in 5th it will go however fast you want on the expressway and still get 40-42 MPG.

I drove it daily for 6 years until the accident, I replaced it with a 1.8L Miata but I still miss it :(

It still drives so I'm currently trying to sell it so I can get it out of my driveway.

Mine only shook on the highway until I replaced a defective passenger side wheel hub. after that I put new inner and outer tie-rods on it, rebuilt the CV axles, put new struts on it and had it aligned.

After all that it didn't shake at all.

I put 4 pioneer 6.5" speakers in it only powered by the head unit, I never had to turn up the radio :D

Highway driving in this car is like a chess game, the 3 cylinder doesn't accelerate quickly at all when you're at 70, it might take you another 10 seconds to get to 75 if you went WOT. The scariest part about highway driving is getting on, especially on uphill on-ramps and even worse when the guy in front of you is doing that "Oh I'm going to go 45 mph until the end of the on ramp and then speed up at the end" shit. You need to be WOT the ENTIRE WAY DOWN the ramp to reach 70 when you hit the merge.

All in all this is a great car but isn't for people who can't drive defensively or strategically by planning ahead.

>>
>>14676613
How is the handling? How fast can you go? Hows the acceleration? Does it brake well at high speeds?
>>
>>14676593
Chevy wiring sucks and the later chevy models did not have the gas mileage of the older ones.

Lost my 93 geo at 180k miles to a double lance change side swipe. It had issues from the get go but I loved it. Owner hid the frame damage well. The right tire had been welded back on where it rusted out. No amount of alignment would fix it. It was just a bit off and 6-9 months and the inner tread of the tire was smooth. Also the wire goign to the transmission stretched so it wouldnt shift all the way and also sometimes would go in and out of gear. Depended on the weather and how hot it was.
>>
>>14676623
>hows the handling
it handles like a gocart in the bends and curves but on a str8 away its smooth sailing and up hills isnt too bad

>How fast can you go
well its the 1.0 3cyl with a 5 speed a whole 993cc! easily 0-60 in 20 seconds when shifted properly, mine has the overdrive 5th gear so 70+ is no difficult thing i drive on the highway daily even had it up to 80 to pass but that is about max for it

>how the acceleration
basically based on how well you can shift, these at high miles are known to have worn syncros to youd have to rev match some gears, like in mine the 1st and 2nd are worn (plan on rebuilding the trans soon) so you have to really get the feel for it but anyway the acceleration is like a motorcycle its a 3 banger so its nothing too impressive

>does it brake well at high speeds
thankfully ive never had to test this out for real but at about 55 with relatively new brakes and some down shifting its breaking distance is pretty good

So why was the Metro a thing? Fuel was really cheap in the 90s wasn't it, and there wasn't a big recession in America. Yet this thing is really slow even compared to European superminis like the VW Polo at the time.

Whereas nowadays where there is a recession apparently the cheapest new car in the US is the Nissan Versa, which isn't small (larger than a Golf) and isn't slow (109 hp).

What mods can you do to make it faster?
>>
>>14671280

I'm neither of those guys but I had a '96 for a long time.
>How fast can you get without it shaking?
So long as the wheels are balanced, it's rock steady at top speed. Which is around 95 MPH near sea level. Much lower a few thousand feet up. I remember on one cross-country trip, there were hills on I-84 between Boise and Salt Lake City which required wide-open-throttle in 3th gear sustained for several minutes at a time just to keep up the speed limit.

>>14671280
>How's the acceleration
Bad but not terrible? It's around 16 seconds 0-60, but most of that time is spent squeezing out the last 15 mph or so. In terms of power-to-weight and acceleration, It's very much like a 1970's or 1980's 6-cylinder full-size pickup. It pulls good up to 45-50 mph in 1st and 2nd gear, which is all you ever need on surface streets. 3rd is where the acceleration starts tapering off, but it's still serviceable (but noticeably less perky than 1 &2) for merging and passing on the highway up to around 75. Above 75 3rd gear is totally played out and there's snail-like acceleration in 4th and 5th.

>Are they good with road trips or car camping?

Lots of cargo room with good access when you fold down the back seats. As for road trips, that depends on how tolerant you are of no air conditioning and downshifting for every single hill.
>>
>>14671591
No economy cars with designs from the 90's or earlier do anything close to good in side-impact tests. When IIHS did their first ever round of side-impact ratings in the mid 90's, pretty much everything failed miserably. Anything designed 2000 or later is an order of magnitude better.

Metros do survive frontal impacts pretty well. I rammed a guardrail with mine at the age of 17 and lived to tell the tale. I was going 80ish before I nailed the brakes, scrubbed off maybe half that speed before losing control and nailing the guardrail dead-straight.
As punishment, my dad actually had it de-accordioned at a sketchy redneck frame shop and made me keep driving it. I had to lay the fenders & hood out on the lawn and jump on them to get them flat enough to bolt back up to the car.
The car was, uh, was pretty shaky after that.

I bought a metro for 600 dlls. Drove it 3 months and sold it for 1k. It had a mismatched hood, nasty interior, different wheels in all corners, frontal damage and non working fans. Yet it never let me stranded and saved my ass and my brother's when our daily drivers broke. After I sold it I got a 7th gen civic and thought "what an upgrade, this is the perfect beater" one month later the head gasket blew up on a trip to the store.
