Yes, but the mechanism on a GAU-8 is pretty ingenious. It uses a continual gear to insert and extract the rounds and there's no firing pin, it uses a high voltage electrical spark to cook off the primers. This allows for an enormous improvement in the rate of fire as well as much lower wear on parts compared to a traditional firing mechanism.
