Guys I want to start a car project with my two mates.
We're all 18, and the aim is to buy something really crap and eventually work our way up to a sleeper.
Any suggestions? (Budget is <£1000 to buy the car itself)

2JZ-GE can be modded, yes, but it's not extremely flexible unless you change internals to GTE-parts, etc. Like all engines you can turbo them, but they won't take too much pressure before needing more upgrades.

9-3 2 door, biggest volume you can find with a turbo (fuck diesel saabs) and you can get quite a bit of power out of them, I remember some Faggot from the cuck that is Sweden got like 350 on stock internals.

Pick one. They were a bit shit. I've heard form several serial Jaguar owners who bought them new and sold them in favour of an older Jaguar within months because they just didn't feel like a Jag. It's a cheap V8 car sure, but they aren't special.

Scrap is on it's arse so cheap cars are everywhere. Some scrappies are charging to take cars away and I've even heard some aren't sending their trucks out as it's not even worth the diesel. Five hundred quid can get you a lot of stuff at the moment so a cheap Jag could be a nightmare compared to other stuff on the market for the same price.

Swaps are a good way to go, but you can turbo them. There are some actually decent forums for old volvos, so you could look there for help. I'm not much of a knowledge on them myself, never owned one, although I've had an eye out for a 242 for some time.

Buy a used gt17 or pick one from a junkyard
Spend the rest turboing, 10:1 rising rate fmu, oil lines+cooler, etc the whole bs.

I did this with an eg sedan with a manual and a d17, gt1752, 8lbs wastegate, 8:1 fmu, walbro 255, stock injectors, custom manni, did it all with the car for 1100 usd.
Dyno'd 162fwhp at 8 pounds
Spend 600$ more for a piggyback/dyno tune, bigger injectors, a boost controller, a bov, and a wideband, and you could easily push 12-15 lbs given your tune is decent.

Honda motors are also a dime a dozen and the stock rotating assembly on most d15/16/17's can handle 160-240 crank hp, depending on the condition of the motor.

Stick to small inline motors to turbo as cheap projects, as small saab turbos are fucking pocket change and can easily double your output, given the stock rotating assemble can handle it and your tune is good.


For anyone in murica, cavaliers/s10's with the 2.2 ln2 ohv motors can handle up to 250 crank hp with a solid tune, makes for a kickass sleeper project.

Go onto Autotrader and look at the <£500 category. Buy whatever the fuck you want, insure it, drive it home, park it somewhere.
It'll be a shitheap no matter what you buy, but I saw a BMW with 'only' 150HP due to engine issues on there a while ago. That's the sort of shit you can expect. That, or ancient Mondeos that are doomed to be parted out or sent to the banger racing circuit.

Then, you go on ebay and find parts for it.
