What are the European and American equivalents of this car?

I'm having a hard time thinking of proper analogues. The right answers should be from around the turn of the millenium but still ahead of their time, should be sports cars that share their underpinnings with mundane family cars, sit in the sub-$50,000 price range, would exhibit a similarly subtle, understated muscular shape, and should exist in a cloud of hype that they can't possibly live up to.

I'd say the closest burger equivalent would be the muscle cars of the late 60s. They weren't exactly high tech but they had mundane origins, great performance on their intended tracks (drag strips, stoplights), and now have a following that would suggest they were far greater than they really were
>>
>>14666985
That is a solid answer. I think Europe does an even better job of "wolf in sheep's clothing" cars, and every big German automaker has an equivalent--the BMW M3 comes to mind.

>>14666992
The American question is definitely harder, but 60s/70s muscle cars don't really fit the bill. The Skyline looks muscular while downplaying its abilities, while big loud Chevelles and Cudas sort of shouted about it, especially in some of the colors they were available with. And the Skyline goes fast in a straight line, but also handles and stops.

chevy ss if you want a wolf in sheeps clothing as you said
>>
>>14667034
That's so interesting that you'd say SS, because you're right about its personality, but it's still a big, comfortable sedan. Their coupes sharing that engine are the hardcore sports car Corvette and the "everybody look at me" Camaro, neither of which look as grown up as the SS. If they coupe-ified the styling of the SS, flared the fenders just a little more, it would be perfect.

E46 M3 is the Euro R34.
There is no American equivalent.

BMW M3 E36. Best handling car of the 1990s, and the E36s looked very understated. Even the 240hp US version still hung with the 90s Japanese Sports Cars from just how good their suspension/chassis was.

E46 just built off that fame, got more aggressive (no sedans, quad exhaust, fender gills).

America....C5 Corvette I guess. Americans just use dedicated platforms and they're underhyped if anything. It's what happens when a shitty but ridiculously huge car company throws their best engineers into making the best sports car for $40k that could keep up with Porsches/Ferraris of that era.
>>
Cobalt SS for America?

Fits the bill for everything you said.

>Is a suped up model of a boring family car
>pretty cheap new
>bretty quick
>is hyped to enormous levels (at least on /o/, people talk all the fucking time about how these are faster than skylines around the nurburgring), and will never live up to them

The GT-R makes JDM fanboys from other countries envy and lust after it.

No one in Europe or Japan is jealous that they can't get their hands on a sweet Cobalt SS. I think we're in consensus that the M3s of the R34 era are the Euro answer, but I think >>14667027
had the closest thing to an American answer. America just doesn't offer very many understated sports coupes for mature, non-redneck adults.

Old Mustangs for 'murrika.

Much like the Skyrines, they come in a jillion different trim levels and models and everyone always sticks fake 5.0 GT (stang) / GT-R (skyline) badges on them, and the fans of the cars are very very opinionated on just why their car is best car.
>>
>>14666979
Euro equivalent is e46 M3.

Murka doesn't have an equivalent from the 90s. If you expand your time period, maybe the CTS-V could fit the bill you're talking about.
>>
>>14667962
This is the most correct answer for a European counterpart.

Damn good car too.
>>
>>14668088
Very good car, couldn't possibly live up to hype, but not a coupe/no coupe variant. Also not sub-$50k (when new, anyway).
>>
>>14667611
>Americans just use dedicated platforms and they're underhyped if anything.
This, really.

Japan loves taking one model car and having it do everything- two door coupe, four door sedan, five door wagon, a three door turbocharged variant for rallying homologation rules, two door coupe with DOHC TWIN CAM 16 stickers on the side, five door wagon with engine from rally variant, etc etc. American manufacturers generally keep their commuter cars separate from their sports and flagship cars, which is why it's so notable when they pull out the stops on a standard shitbox (Cobalt SS, Neon SRT-4, Regal T-Type/Grand National [and that generation Hurst/Olds as well], SHO Taurus, and so on).

So do the Europeans.

E39 M5s and R34 GTRs were similarly priced in yurop back in 2000.
Also the fact that the GTR is a coupe is pretty irrelevant. No one thinks any more or less of it because of that.

>98-02 vs 00-02
>280 hp vs 380 hp
Audi is stronger but over all both are rare and very original.
M3 is far less comparable to R34, because it doesn't has turbo, 4wd and is lighter. Audi did it.

>>
>>14667932
Not on a race track they arent, In japan a car is limited to 180 kph on city roads. Thats only cars built within the last 15 yrs or so. Race tracks lay a signal wire under where passenger cars enter and exit the track. When on the track or on track grounds the cars limiter is lift and they can go above 180 kph.

Though the Australian equivalent to the R34 would probably be the Monaro.

US equivalent would have to be one of their iconic muscle or pony cars, possibly the Mustang.

I'm on my second PTU. Fortunately it costs less than 1000 labor included to swap in a new one. They don't bother to reman them so you get a new one every time. This is fixed 2013 and up if you get performance package with the water-cooled unit.

Despite some valid concerns with build quality, total cost to own is much easier to live with.
