So you get either one of the best engines ever made (BEAMS)

A POS 2jz with no turbos and the same power as the beams.

Or an engine that is junk, makes as much power as a 4age, and takes mods less reliably.

Guys please try to focus. Whats wrong with DDing and maintaining a stock 1G-FE?
>>

Nothing.

It's just people being idiots and thinking that every car has to be a top-of-the-line model for laying down sick laps, hektik skids, and monster ETs.

This. The IS200 is a very well balanced car. It's certainly not the fastest, and it's not even aspiring to be the fastest.

backseat is cramped as fuck though

"BEAMS" was a bullshit marketing acronym meaning "breakthrough engine with advanced mechanism system" and virtually ALL Toyotas engines from that era were "beams" engines. Including the 2JZ. It simply meant it had variable valve timing and ACIS (acoustic control induction system).

That said, the IS200 is a great car. The 6-speed manual you got with them is really tight and smooth and flows nicely with the 2 liter straight-six engine.
The best part is the near perfect weight distribution (52/48 for the sedan and 51/49 for the wagon). These cars are so fun to drive on the limit and the road feel is incredible. The lack of power really doesn't bother me.

Though it drinks fuel like its lemonade.

And since you're Norwegian, how the hell are you able afford the fuel?

It's great for a DD. Not exactly fast but it has torque. The gearbox is is extremely precise and enjoyable to operate. It's basically a car with BMW ride quality with Toyota reliability. I have one that has 207000 km on it and beside regular maintenance I've only had to change the valve cover gasket and a few gaskets in the gearbox. Previous owner (until 120 000) did no major repairs.

It drinks about 10L/100 km on daily-type driving, meaning short trips to work and the shops with plenty of stops and starts and the occasional hard acceleration because racecar.
On long road trips I've had it down to around 7L/100 km.
It costs a bit, but I'm happy with it. There really is no other car in this price range I'd rather have.
Fuel prices are stupidly high, but at least lower now than they used to be. And the 70L tank fuel lasts long enough to not feel like I'm at the pumps all the time.

Oh and another reason why the SportCross is a godmachine. The front passenger seat can fold flat and is useful as a table for stops on long road trips or for hauling cargo that's long enough to fill from the rear hatch to the glove box, or for simply putting your legs on while sitting in the back.

Why the fuck have no other car makers done this since?

I've managed to get 5,5 l/100 km on highway in the summer with good tires. City driving gets 10-11 l/100 km average. Dropping gas prices are a relief.

5.5 in an IS200 is downright impressive. How on earth did you manage that? I know quite a few IS200-owners with a penchant for fuel economy (I know it sounds lame, but anyway) and the closest I've seen anyone get is like 6.8 l/100 km.

I had just done full maintenance before summer: changed the engine oil, oil filter, air filter, transmission fluid and differential fluid. Also I was running on new tires that were graded A in terms of fuel economy. I think using octane 98 with fuel additives has its effects as well to some extent.
Needless to say, I was extremely pleased.

OP here again, I went to see the guy today. The car was in good condition and had a full service book and everything looks allright, but it felt alitle meh.
Will it serve me well as a "meh" DD or should I just save up alitle bit more for 2-3 months and get the later (not latest) generation is250 instead?

(Cont.)
All I know is that the is250 has 50 more horsepower than the is200.

How do they compare in reliabillity, fuel consumption, ride etc? I don't have the time and effort needed for moding so aftermarket is nothing I care about.

Id rather get a manual than an auto, is there a reason not to?
>>
The 6 speed gearbox is such a disappointment on these cars, I don't know if they did it to make 150hp feel sporty, but when 6th is only marginally taller than 4th on my 5 speed GM shitbox there is a problem.
>>
>>14668477
too bad, IS' back looks quite disgusting, not to mention your green color is true crap
>>
>>14672862
They did it to make 155 hp feel sporty. The car is really dull at slow speeds, but in highway speeds it feels faster than most. I believe that is due to the gearing.
In 6th gear at 62 mph/100kph it sits at around 3000 rpm. Still gets decent fuel economy at those revs over long distances though. And is super quiet unless you floor it.

Get the IS250. Less cramped, more equipment (like memory seats) and remember there is no cruise control (or possibility to fit one aftermarket) in the IS200 with manual transmission.
Also, it's a newer car. Duh. Get the 250.

I love the is200 cluster, looks like a swiss watch of something.

Anyone know if you could swap this cluster into any of the other lexus models?

Stock cluster is red btw ;) >>14666462 has done his up with white LEDs I'm guessing.

There's nothing stopping you from trying to fit one in another car, but it would be a wildly custom job seeing as no other cars have the same dimensioned cluster.
