A lot of them have a button that just applies the regular brakes. It's pretty dumb. If you hit it while moving it kind of just slows you down like if you rested your foot firmly on the brakes. I don't even know if it works with the car off.

I got the lowdown on the whole electronic handbrake meme when I was shopping for my current car. I sat in one of the cars on my list, adjusted the seat, and looked around to check where the controls where.
Then my mouth engaged itself without informing my brain, and I asked the salesman where the handbrake was. 'Oh, it's electronic' and he launched into a sales pitch on all the bells and whistles it did.
I settled for a car with a proper handbrake instead.

I almost never use my parking brake where I live because everything is so flat.
It does disengage automatically when I press the accelerator, which is pretty cool. I wish there was a way for it to engage automatically when the car is shifted into park.
