How come it's 2016 and still no one has managed to beat the inline 6 engine?

Emission standards. Or else conjoined inline sixes would be a lot more common.
>>
>>14651262
You mean a V12?

and what about V8 vs I6 emissions?
>>
>>14651251
why beat it when u can just have it?

You think this would fit in an s10? Seems like a good replacement.

Fuck yeah man, let the dumbasses be dumbasses. Not everyone can think for themselves, let them jock their 2ZJ and other magazine motors, let them waste their money. You can't help people like that, you can only beat them. Sometimes an anal thrashing is the only thing these faggots can understand
>>
>>14651251

Beat it at what? Last years Le Mans winners had a V8 and a V4. Last WRC winner had an I4, as does the best selling car in the world. The current fastest car in the world has been back and forth between a V8 and a W16 and Inline 4's are currently dominating the WTCC. In what world hasn't the I6 been beaten?
>>
>>14651273
V12's are significantly more thirsty than both.
>>
>>14651306
the only real condition is full throttle
>>
Only big diesel trucks and heavy duty diesel truck engines need to be straight 6. For cars a 4banger, V6 or a V8 are vastly superior for many reasons.

Cars are already pigfat looking as hell with transverse 4 cylinders and V6's, they'd be 10 feet wide if manufactures start using transverse inline 6's.

>>
>>14655089
lets be honest now, that clip is 26 years old
>>
>>14655107
Yep, that's at least how long I6s have been redundant for.
>>
>>14655089
Damn i keep forgetting how good the 1uz is. The VH41/45DE too, forged internals from factory, weighs as much as an RB, but can make 500hp NA and up to 1000 with boost, vastly superior to any I6 of the era.
>>
>>14655119
do you actually believe that?
>>
>>14655126
Yeah, shame the UZ never got the wide angle valve "GE" heads.
>>
>>14655132
Do you not? Why are i6s not redundant?
>>
>>14655132
>everyday japcrap cross plane V8
>proved to be smoother and better balance than high end European I6 options

I guess sines inline sixes have made such a huge comeback in passenger cars in recent times, this evidence doesn't count right?
>>
>>14655148
how would one way of arranging pistons inside the engine be de-facto better than another? its what you want from the engine, how much space you have in the bay and shit like that. V6s are more compact (well, shorter at least), but dont have the engine balance of an i6. whilw the latter has a much narrower profile, but is longer.
SEE, ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. NOW TRY MAKE A SHITBOX WITH AN 18 CYLINDER RADIAL OR A SUPERCAR WITH A 2 STROKE V-TWIN

how is this difficult to understand?
>>
>>14655164
Or, you could have a V8 that is better balanced, more power, similar fuel economy and importantly, less pigfat weight hanging over the front axle.
I for one would happily take these advantages for spark plugs that may not be quite as accessible.

And it's not 1984 anymore. V6s are just as well balanced and smooth as an inline variety.
>>
>>14655178
ignoring the fact that the engine is havier, and more thirsty?

>>
>>14655188
>heavier and more thirsty
Good point, that's another two reasons I wouldn't readily choose an I6 configuration.
>>
But they have? I4s are incredible especially diesels
>>

You mean how they are pushing so much torque in tiny engines? They make the same amount of torque found in large v8s

>>
>>14651251
Inline six engines are pigfat though, and have the package about as well as a rhino.

>>14651294
Why get that when an iron block LS is lighter, just as cheap, and it'll make even more power if you add some proper boost?
>>

>>
>>14655303
Power band can be tuned to suit usage, diesels generally dont rev very high at all, which restricts the horsepower they can output at standart air-fuel ratios, but even if you tune it to deliver max power at top rpms, it'd still rev like a limp dick. Not to mention the engines are heavy as shit compared to gasoline ones. The only thing they're good for is towing shit.
>>
>>14655269
Still one of the most reliable engines on the track. Evos and imprezas falling left and right while you keep on brapping

Lolvo did a transverse i6, before they went progressive and decided that 4 cylinders is the most any car should have.
>>
>>14651294

my stock 2.2l 5cyl turbo makes more than that thing and it's 21 years old.

>>

oshit, so they were
the longitudinal FWD platform always throws me off
>>
>>14655507
Because it offers 0 packaging advantages in transverse setups over an inline four.
>>
>>14651251
because V6 are better in literally every way compared to inline 6.
>>
You know the I6 is dead when not even BMW makes them anymore. We can still hold out for turbo 4s
>>
>>14655395

Even transverse MR's are wrong, It's just lazy engineering so they can use some econobox powertrain. Unequal length drive shafts are gross.
>>
>>14655717
Unequal length driveshafts aren't that bad when they're driving the rear wheels though.
>>
>>14655717
some cars have this weird extension coming out of the transaxle to make the effective length of the shafts equal
>>
>>14651316
