I am considering buying a MK1 Skoda Octavia RS 1.8T 180HP. I don't know much about these cars but i think they look great and are pretty rare compared to Audis, Seats and VWs with the same 1.8T engine. Are they reliable? How do they respond to simple mods (CAI, Suspension, FMIC, remap, exhaust)?
>>
>>14644361
I don't know OP but I am Czech so he'll yeah buy one! Wicked reliable cars
>>
For a car that old reliability is mostly going to be down to how it has been treated during its life. The engine itself is very tuneable, an intake, exhaust, intercooler and remap should get you over 200hp. Heavily modified 1.8T engines have hit over 400hp reliably.
>>
>>14644397
Thanks for the reply man! I found one near me in red with the leather interior completely stock and only 110k KM for 3.500€. Do you think its a fair price?
>>
>>14644361
just rods, a k04 turbo and a tune and you can hit about 250 hp
>>
>>14644423
Yeah that's what i've always heard about VAG 1.8T engines. Do you know how good it handles compared to similar cars?
>>
>>14644428
Not the other guy, but czechanon too. I think its pretty good price
>>
>>14644467
They handle quite well for a large FWD hatchback. Better than other VW/Seat/Audis that were built on the same platform
>>
>>14644460
How much money would all of that cost? Is the K04 a straight bolt on?
>>
>>14644505

I thought the selling point of Seat was that it handled better than other vag equivalents.
>>
>>14644361
>FF
>>
>>14644620
They were just aimed at younger buyers while being cheaper.
>>
>>14644640
I just want a comfy and somewhat sporty car. Whats the problem?
>>
>>14644361
I like the current VRS because it's pretty much the only reasonably priced performance car of its size here in Europe. Now the Mondeo Sts and the like are out of production, we NEED the Octavia VRS.

The older one has a lot more competition to deal with, though. I'm sure they're perfectly OK, and probably quite good value, but where I am at least you can do an awful lot better than "perfectly OK" for very little money if you're looking at used midsize hot hatches. Situation might be completely different where you are, though.
>>
>>14646302
I know its not the best car ever, but it won't be my first car anyway. I just want to mod the shit out of it and have some fun.
>>
>>14644686
>sporty
>FF
thats the problem
>>
>>14647979
What should i get then?
>>
>>14644548
Depends on the parts quality, if you use cheap ebay stuff it will be 1k at most. The k04 is almost a bolt on as far as i know
>>
>>14644361
>Are they reliable?

Very, unless it's been badly abused.

>How do they respond to simple mods (CAI, Suspension, FMIC, remap, exhaust)?

Very well it's the same bottom end as the 225 and 240hp BAM and BFV so proven to 320 hp + but the K03 turbo will be the limiting factor so you probably won't get much more than about 210ph without swapping that for the K04 or a hybrid but there are loads of options for not too much money.

Looks comfy to me
>>
>>14648260
Yeah, all that rattling fake plastic, atrocious ride, smells of recycled toxic waste and tin can sound really all add up to great comfort.

Don't you know that Skoda is master of cutting edges? And that only a total fantard buys some well spec'd Skoda because of insufferable costs of optional equipment?
>>
>>14648018
You're obviously european, so the only genuinely sporty alternative in your budget would be somethings like e36/46 320i. Not that guy though, so Skoda is perfectly fine for DD, probably more than the beamer just because it spare parts are VAG, therefore basically for free and better fuel economy, although that's mostly dependent on your driving style.

I personally would recommend the 1.9tdi. Super reliable engine, and if you manage to find one with under 200k it might be worth considering chiptune. You can get it all the way up to 120kw without noticeably more wear. I did 200k out of 350k with it and no issues whatsoever. Those are also the only ones that come with 6speed gearbox, but I might be wrong on this
>>
I have a 2003 vRS back in India. Damn, I really miss driving it after I came to the US :(

I never did any mods on it and I always kept it stock.

I don't think that's quite what you mean now is it?

Its not going to be my daily, thats why i am considering the RS. I am tired of seeing Ibizas, Golfs, A3s etc and the RS is pretty rare in my country. I love how it looks and the extra space is nice, i just wanted to know if it would make a nice weekend car for short trips and some spirited driving.
>>
>>14648566
>I'm tired of seeing VAG
>wants to buy VAG
>>
>>14648575
Everyone keeps saying this kind of things while not suggesting anything else. I'm just asking for some help.
>>
>>14648585
Focus
RX-8
Celica
Eclipse
Omega (maybe too big for you)

But obviously if you want to stay with VAG and like that engine, and Octavias are rare (where the hell is that in Europe), then sure, go for it. But I'd expect neither comfort (which is something you can judge yourself when you test-ride it), nor above average reliability.
>>
>>14648627
I dont really want another hatch and i am not into japanese cars. The omega is an option that i've considered but it doesn't look as sporty. I don't how it handles but it seems a bit boaty. Thanks for the reply, i will look up all those anyway!
>>
VRS Skodas are incredibly comfy desu senpai
>>
>>14648652
Well, Octavia is a liftback, that's kinda like hatchback...

But in that case, have you considered Volvo S60 (R)? Sounds like a car that checks all the boxes (I've seen)

Damn i didn't think of those. I want to keep it as cheap as posible is it wont be my first car. What would a good unit cost?
>>
>>14648684
Looks like S60 R goes for around 10k (as per mobile.de ) . Non-R is prolly much cheaper and still quite lively

>5 cylinders tho
>221 kW

Don't forget about Saab 9-3, too (and with that Vectra and BLS).

Octavia (VRS or not) doesn't feel quick to anyone who has driven other cars than shitboxes, because that's what this is - slightly faster shitbox

My mate has a Volvo V70 with 300k km in it and an LPG tank in the trunk, feels like a better ride no matter how I look at it.
>>
>>14648720
A fast shitbox is what i am looking for, so i think i may stick with the skoda as a budget project, thanks for the help anyway.

Heh, yeah, in that case Octavia or Golf sound like the go-to solution. Well, then I'm out of cars. Ford Puma/Cougar maybe.

btw I said "slightly faster", not "fast".
>>
>>14648798
I want to turn it from "slightly faster" to fast and then probably crash it into a tree or something
>>
>>14648798
Oooh oooh, what about a 159?
Gotta get that soul and passion going
>>
>>14648835
Sounds like a fun project! Skodas are simple cars (that's where that "reliability" comes from), so it probably really is the best choice. Have fun then!
