Back in probably 2007, a friend of mine bought a 2005 GLI with about 20k on it. It was a nice car and the 1.8T scooted that heavy turd around pretty well, but he was working on it all the time. What a piece of shit. Alternator(s), water pump, timing belt broke at 50k miles and left us stranded. He had it for less than 2 years.
As much as I love the GTI, I don't think I'd ever buy one.

My '12 GTI. Had it for two years now, and I have zero complaints. It's a 6MT, which is an absolute blast. Had Bilstein coilovers installed for a more aggressive look, and I had a Stage I tune done but it's still my DD, and all around grocery getter. I got the 4 door because I've got two kids, and my wife drives it like she stole it when I actually give her the keys.
Cuck my ass. This car fucking rocks, and I came out of a CC that was a fucking dog.
Whatever your thoughts on VW, they continue to hit a homer with the GTI.
