Looking at buying a 2nd hand Ford transit that was used for some company as a sort of camper thing where I jam a mattress in the back. I am looking to travel alot, but not pay the big bucks for lodging. Are there better cheaper options that will give me decent reliability and mpgs?

Ford Ranger or Chevy S10/Colorado with a topper. A full mattress should fill the bed.

Japanese trucks (Ram 50, Mighty Max, Isuzu Pup, Toyota T100/Tacoma, 720/D21/Frontier) would work as well, but the Japanese manufacturers tend to use numerically higher gearing in their trucks than the Americans, which hurts mileage at speeds over 55mph.

Yeah, an economy wagon with back seats that fold down

Saturn wagon with back seats taken out

Get the most popular vehicle.

F-150. Or E-150 if you need to hide your power level.

Find parts everywhere. Even if it breaks down once a week you will still technically never be "stranded".

>falling for the marketing

Ford sold 780k F-series trucks in 2015.
GM sold 824k Silverados and Sierras in 2015.

What about all the years before?

I thought OP was looking at inexpensive second hand

2010-2014 was the F-series.
2009 and older was GM.

I bought an astro off craigslist with similar ideas for how it would look.

I wanted 3500+ lb towing capacity, sleepability, good on gas as I can, and DD.
That's not the easiest list to satisfy.

OP here, how much did you pay? The transits can be kinda pricey. That looks like a clean Astro.

She's a bear to work on though. I am/formerly was an old Volvo guy, and fuck. I miss huge engine bays and tiny engined.

Kinda

Hahaha, nah she wasn't doing to good when I bought it.
400.
Broken sway bar, stuck thermostat, resoldered the ecbm, toasted tires, brakes suspension. I suspect it went near 20k without an oil change. The girl that had it was a dirt bag.

What else? Blower motor was toast, I added the hitch, an electronic trailer brake controller, ripped out the interior found cigarettes and... Piercings and shit everywhere. Found the oil change sticker from the windshield in the glovebox, and fuck. But now its rad.
>>
>>14637071
Damn. The cheapest transits I can find are about 3k and have 190k+ mileage.
>>
>>14637143
Astros are good if you can find a clean one. Or you could get a conversion van. Some people used them as RVs so they have low miles.
>>
>>14636838

Well get one of those again.

A neat find was the metal used for trim brackets is trash. Once this rust eats through the rocker panel, they go quick.
