What do you guys think of 5 cylinder engines? Should automakers do some R&D to keep them relevant, or should they just die out in favor of I4/I6/V6?
>>
They are absolutely awesome in every respect and sound fantastic. It would definitely nice to have them as an option on cars in the future.

On the other hand they are outdated and obsolete from all I know.
>>
>>14633071
>gas mileage of a 6
>power of a 4
>>
They were literally designed just for GUYS WE NEED MORE CYLINDERS FOR MORE POWER BUT TRANSVERSE LAYOUT LOL LETS JUST GO WITH 5 AND CALL IT A DAY

There's nothing special about them they don't excel at anything compared to any other layout, but a small amount of people on here love them because they're fucking hipsters.
>>
H4, I6 and V8 are all that we will ever need.
>>
>>14633108
Serious question: is there any truth to this statement? Why would they have the gas mileage and power of a 5?
>>
>>14633172
They don't have either. Someone always posts that same comment anytime an I5 is mentioned.

>>14633172
he is a dumbass, audi 5cyl diesel blocks can take shitloads of power
>>
what about vr6? they seem to fit in most 4c aplications and arnt as wide as a v6
>>
>>14633172
On fuelly.com the 2.5 i5 averages 27 mpg in the Passat. The 3.6 vr6 averages 24. The 1.8t (2014, others were 2013) averages 29-34.

The 1.8t makes 170hp, same as the 2.5 na but makes 184 torque @ 1500rpm compared to 177 torks at 4750rpm

With the power we can get with direct inject 4cyl with or without turbos, there is no need to have the off balance vibrating monstrosity.

Germany is gods workshop, and Audi is at the top of the German car brands. None have a history like Audi and every Audi has the Motorsport success heritage inside it. After visiting audi head quarters in ingolstadt germany i got to see the hidden garages and a factory tour as well as seeing the delivery room and the musuem and they are simply the best. when you drive through ingolstadt and around the area every car is audi. audi parts are dirt cheap from germany and the car culture is 1000 better than here in amerilard
>>
>>14633375
good lord...suck much German dick?

Audi is a poor man's Mercedes and the whole world knows it.

Isn't that i5 an older design? Compare the one in the OP pic with similarly new 4/6 cyls.
>>
>>14633404
i dont think the jetta golf passat or anything vw has similar to a rs6, rs7 allroad a6 tt r8 sq5 sq7 etc or any of the old cars.
>>
>>14633479
It's the only i5 they've used in recent history.

>Turbo makes same power and more torque than N/A with larger displacement

Who'd have thought it?
>>
>>14635336
4 with a turbo takes up less engine bay space and uses less gas than a 5 with or without

who would have thought it?
>>
The problem with 5s is that they never come in a displacement that isn't already in a common 4 cylinder range. So, they never really make more power than similar sized 4s, and get worse gas mileage because more ignition are taking place for essentially no good reason at that displacement. What's needed is something like 2.8 to 3.4 liter 5s, size you can't build 4s at, but smaller than the now typical v6 range of 3.5+.
>>
Not only does all the posts show how the 5 cylinder is obsolete, but also why the 8 cylinder is quickly going the same way

Tfw turbo'd mustang has same hp as v8 from just a few years ago with better mpg

Um... what?
>>
>>14635348

Who told you that?

Turbo routing takes up space on its own

Also power just doesn't come from anywhere. You need a certain amount of air and fuel to get a certain amount of power
>>
>>14635422
I'll bite.
>Turbo routing takes up space on its own
No argument here. However, turbo routing allows more freedom than a fixed cylinder configuration.
>Also power just doesn't come from anywhere. You need a certain amount of air and fuel to get a certain amount of power
In which a turbo charged engine has the potential to flow more air at a variety of RPM and throttle openings.

I5's sound godly. I also agree with >>14635395. Like seriously, if you've never heard one of pic related, you'll be enlightened once you do. One in this vid's been tuned to like 700hp.
https://youtu.be/FrBhZdqWR9A

But one downside to a 5cyl is that they aren't a balanced engine configuration.
>>
>>14635395
My Mercedes i5 2.7 litre diesel gets 177hp, 400nm and about 40mpg on highway so its decent.
>>
I assume they're too big and impractical for 99% street cars.

Manufacturers don't even use straight 6's anymore, just V6 or VR6 layouts.
And you can just turbo a 4cyl to get more power whilst retaining the economy for the most part, and they're a cylinder smaller so less costs.
>>
>>14635477
>But one downside to a 5cyl is that they aren't a balanced engine configuration.
More balanced than I4 or H4 though.
>>
>>14635604
I5 gives smoother power delivery due to more power strokes, but the dynamics of the rotating assembly doing it's thing are very unbalanced.
kinda like I6 vs V8
>>
>>14633489
Nope, 2.5 and 2.5 TFSI are two different animals
>>
>>14636949
Would the constant powerstroke give I5's a torque advantage?
>>
>>14637425
No.

>muh heritage
Audi uses VW platforms and VW engines and BMW, Porsche and Mercedes has more motorsports achievements than Audi could ever achieve. Their famous Audi Urquattro rally car was beat by a RWD Lancia. Even their "supercar", the mid engined 2015 R8 Plus V10 is getting raped by a BMW sports coupe, the M4 GTS on tracks.

Piss off, Arab lad. Mercedes or bust.
>>
>>14635411
The turbo i4 is also stressed to its limits, while you still get more power out of the V8 with less cost and effort.

It's an impressive little engine, but displacement has its merits too.

Volvos 2.5t i5 in the s70 awd got like 19mpg and made about 240. The 2.4 4 na made something like 190 but I didn't look it up so I may be wrong.
