/o/, educate me in the ways of the mid to late 80s Volvos. Like the 240 and the 740. Are they as dependable as they say? Are the turbos any good? What should you pay for one, and what milage should you be looking for (mid 100ks?). How easy is it to find parts for. Are they better in quality and dependability then let's say a mid 2000s subaru legacy/outback?

I've done a little digging around and they look good, but I wanted /o/'s opinion. Let's face it neither of us have anything better to do.
As usual shitposting is welcome. Faggots.

Successful motorsport career in the 80's
>>
Do they make the 240 in a sedan with a turbo? How scarce are those?
>>
At least the 240s are overrated. The auto transmissions, the fuel injection, and the HVAC are known to have issues. The bodies themselves are rust-prone in weird places like around the windshield. They're also not that safe in a modern context.

A mid 2000s Subaru is going to be in much better condition just from age and the electronics/electrics are going to be infinitely more reliable. Just don't get the engine with defective head gaskets and keep in mind the 4WD system will need axle shafts and shit.
>>
>>14628916

Also, 240s are overpriced because PBR-drinking hipsters are crazy for them.
>>
>>14628901
Yes, it's called a 242 GLT and 244 GLT.
What retards still don't understand is that OP's Volvo is a Volvo 245.

300D butthurt

>>14628669
Yeah they're pretty reliable, just get one made in the late 80s-early 90s to get the best ones (galvanized body/better wiring). Boxer engines are nice up until you have to work on them but seeing as most only ever go for sale when they mysteriously start overheating (head gaskets) for like $3000 you'll probably get more life out of a redblock volvo per dollar spent assuming you get a non rusty example. Ipd and FCP euro sell both replacement and performance parts for pretty cheap but you're not going to be going super fast without shedding some weight and/or doing some engine modifications. Good deal of suspension parts are available though.
>>
>>14628669
You can get a decent one for about $600-$900.
>>
Might be kind of cool to get one of these for a project later on. Either the sedan or the coupe. What are your options for an engine swap? Like what if I could get a turbo 740, the engine should drop into a 242 or 244 easily right? Or are they to under powered to bother with.

Do they handle well stock?
>>
>>14628947
>calls people retards
>calls a 242 a sedan
>>
>>14628947
Thanks for the info man. Btw I pretty much just used the first image I could find searching for a volvo 240
>>
>>14629267
The 240, 740, and 940 all have the same engine and share a ridiculous amount of parts. I've never driven a turbo but if you go to the aptly named turbobricks website you'll find some good info. They're old cars so no, they don't handle like a sportscar. I get joy out of driving mine but I like driving slow things "fast". Polyurethane bushings and some modern shocks are supposed to make the handling very responsive though
>>
>>14628947

The GLT's never came with a turbo fucktard. They're called 242 and 244 Turbo.
>>
>>14629267
240s are ludicrously underpowered stock, and 740s aren't much better due to using the same engine (Volvo i4 redblock, starting with the sub-2L ones in the early 240s and the later 240s using the same 2.3L that went into the 7 series). The point of the car was to be a safe, reliable, safe, slow, safe box on wheels, not to get there in a hurry- even the turbo variants are really nothing to write home about until you get into the 850s a few decades later.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to swap one B230 for another, but all the wiring and accessories will likely be different and then there's the matter of the tarbo itself. You might be better off looking for one of the (rare) 16-valve engines instead.

>Do they handle well stock?
They handle like a brick with four wheels attached. Everything can and will squeak and wobble and the entire engine will try to torque itself off the motor mounts when you start it (the motor mounts are wear items due to a safety design and should be replaced as such!).

Wagons come with stiffer suspension in the rear and are about as common as the sedans, but more desirable for a lot of people because of the ridiculous amount of space in the back, something common for pretty much all Volvo wagons. Coupes are generally more rare because not many people ordered/bought them, at least in the 'states.

>>14629273
Generally speaking, for the older Volvos, they follow a three digit number system of XYZ, where X is the model (2 series, 7 series, 9 series), Y is the number of cylinders (4 for the i4 redblock, 6 for the V6 engines you should stay away from), Z is number of doors (2dr coupe, 4dr sedan, 5dr wagon). After a few years, the second number came to mean a higher trim level instead- there were a small number of 260s ordered with the four banger from the 240, for example, and by the time the 740 came out, Volvo had dropped the three digit system entirely in favor of just "Volvo 740" with a trim level (DL, GLT, etc).
>>
>>14629268
242 is a sedan senpai, it's just a 2 door sedan.
>>
>>14629341
don't be a loser, for 240's it's easier to just call 242s coupes
>>
>>14629341
>>14629358
What happens when you bring those 262C Bertones into the mix? Aren't they officially called the 262 Coupe but have four seats like normal anyway?
>>
>>14629358
It's easier, but that guy was being a dick and is technically wrong so yeah.
>>14629376
I think "officially" they are, but I'm pretty sure they're the same as a 242 just with a chopped roof so they'd be technically a 2 door sedan.
>>
>>14629311
The best thing to do IMO if you're looking to keep it volvo is to get a b240 and do a 16v head conversion with a turbo, I'm in the process of doing that on my 242 GT and it's fairly straightforward but a lot of work, when it's done though it makes pretty damn good power
>>
>>14629437
Nice. I'm pretty interested in getting one of these sometime in the future. I've already got a project that I'm pretty dedicated to though.

These things work as a daily?

Ugliest cars in the world. Only SAABs are worse.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my 06 golf in favor of something that chugs less cock. The 244 might be just the ticket.

I've got an 88' 740 Turbo, It has 220k km and the engine still runs like a top. You get age related problems that are pretty much unavoidable, but so far It has never broken down on me, even in -40c. Its not a fast car, 182hp, but it is fun to drive, especially in the Winter. The aftermarket support is ok, and you can usually find oem or refurbished parts without much trouble. Also, due to the interchangeability, you can often find what you need off a car in the junkyard for pennies. The build quality on the volvo's of the era is much better than subarus in the late 90's and early 00's. I paid 2400cad for mine.
>>
>>14630264
That thing looks pretty sweet, that's a car that really looks better as a wagon than a sedan though
>>
>>14630398
I agree, I'm lucky I found a wagon with a manual, the only thing I don't have is an lsd.
>>
>>14630483
Just pop a Dana 30 in there and be done with it
>>
I've seen a few ads saying that they are 5cyl engines. How are those things in terms of quality?
>>
>>14631088
Pretty sure the 5cyl appeared with the 850, and they switched from RWD to FWD with that car.
No more opportunities to get hektik as fuck, but the 5cyl is pretty based and sounds nice.
>>
>>14631100
They're not bad engines at all, they showed up in the 850 like you said with the switch to FWD and were carried over into the S70/V70 as well. I've heard it's a good idea to stay away from anything past the first gen V70, though, and away from the AWD XCs in general because they're shite.
>>
How can you tell the difference between the 2.3l that's fuel injected and the 2.3l that's carbureted, aside from just looking at the engine. . Were they produced at the same time or was the carbureted one older?

I looked around and it seems like the injected 2.3 is almost as quick as the turbo 2.1.

Is there any difference in quality?
>>
>>14629392
You try sitting in that back seat and see if you can still call it a sedan. They feel like they were ment for kids or to make lawyers happy

I like the idea of the 870, but the sedan is a bit ugly to be honest. I wouldn't be against swapping parts around seeing as how both are pretty cheap though

Ludicrously underpowered eh?

You think this is a game? Takes balls to pilot these beasts on the public roads.

They're easy to work on, the auto transmissions are some of the most reliable ever made, but you will have more issues to deal with than something newer.

Not really sure your message was clear bud. Don't let me russle your jimmies though, I didn't say the 870 was shit.
