Hey /o/

Im looking to buy a 1991 BMW 318i for around 4500CDN. Ive already looked up a lot of common issues for the E30's and I feel like I know in general what to expect.

Is there any uncommon things I should know before buying an old BMW?

It is uncommon for them to run.
>junk goes in all fields
Or if they are. It's uncommon for them to run well.

Inspect timing chain tensioner, check for rust around the car (front valance, trunk, above license plate).
Check all electronic operated device in the car and make sure it works, it is a pain in the ass to replace most of them (eg. windows).
How many miles on the car?

Why?
>>
>>14622908
Confirmed for never driven/owned a good one.
I just hit 278k miles in my '87, with 30k of that being driven by me. Not a single hiccup that I didn't cause myself.

OP, as long as you replace the timing belt, water pump, everything rubber in the engine bay and under the car, and do a good weekly inspection (like you should), the car will reward you.

This shit is expensive to do though. The parts alone are pricey as fuck. This is why I've never bought an old M3, it's affordable to purchase but to keep and maintain...yikes. Not as a student.

NO.

Not everything to me is about speed. I just want a car with character and thats rwd. I also want to learn how to properly maintain older cars as a hobby.

My parents already gave me a 2011 Jetta TDI, this car would be strictly for fun/project.

The 4banger E30s have timing chains, not belts.

Guy youre replying to here.
Parents own a 2012 X5 Diesel, dad uses a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter, diesel, for work, and the Jetta is obviously diesel. We have never had any issues with any car. Dont know where the "BMW/VW/Merc are all shit quality leaking pieces of shit" rhetoric comes from. I've personally never had an issue.

X5 has 85,000KM
Sprinter has 43,000KM
Jetta has 208,000KM (was our only car from 2011-2014)

Not one single issue in regards to reliability and whatever.

It doesn't need it because I catch shit before it happens. I'd rather not wait for something to go out to think about replacing it.
