Need a car for around 5k.
Looking fo a nice car(good interior and decent driving) which holds its value well since I'll be reselling it after a year.
I found a few cars on craigslist but too hard to weed out.
Any suggestions?
What about this 2007 Hyundai Elantra with 110k miles

Absolutely need a sedan.
Only the Aurora fits the bill, but it is more than 60 miles away from me.
Is the Elantra a bad deal? Single owner and has all service records.

No service records and automatic transmission makes that one a big no. It'd be an amazing price for a 540i otherwise.
Try to look for a 2001-2003 530i with complete service records around 100k miles.
It is a good first car so long as you're willing to DIY little stuff as German import mechanics tend to have steep labor costs. It'll drive better, look better, and have a nicer interior than anything else in this price range.
>>14618197
Couldn't find any 01-03 540i within 50 miles from me.
SF bay area is shit for cars.
Always priced too high and maintained like shit.
>>14618207
Jesus christ you're right, your craigslist is giving me cancer.
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5482320901.html
Only one I could find. Unless you're willing to watch like a hawk for the perfect manual 530i or go a little bit further I'd probably give up then.
>>14618315
Can't travel that far.
What do you think of the Elantra?
I also found an 03 Mazda 6 with 140k miles for 2.5k(real cheap)

If you want a BMW, take it to a BMW mechanic for a once over.
Google BMW+ $10,000 rule.
I recommend Palo Alto Bimmer. I got a used E46 and they had all the paperwork. That shop did only what was needed, and the usual stuff that needs work on cars of that age. They can do a used car inspection for $130, it is worth it.
hold out for a 330i/335i. JMO... if you get a 328/325 use it as a bargaining chip. I didn't pay any attention to BMWs before I got my 330 a couple months ago, but 328s are goddamn everywhere in the bay area... if you go that route, wait til you find one you really really want--after looking at at least 10.
If you find one that has paperwork that said the VANOS was redone, random upper/lower hoses, and the DISA valve--for less than $10K that's your best bet....IMO.
I would never pay more than $5,000 for a E46 or E39 328 unless it had ALL the maintenance paperwork including what I mentioned above. Not even $5,100. VANOS rebuild is more important than DISA vavle, IMO, you can do the DISA yourself.
Make sure you get at least 2 WORKING keys. Remote might be dead, but will still start car...pass on that one anyway.
FYI cheapest place to get a replacement key is Palo Alto Bimmer. They actually get them from the stealership, (not going to mention which one, to avoid drama) but they don't do much markup--if any. Most expensive place to get a new key was Stevens Creek BMW.
Also you might pay more, but get one from someone in their 50s+ who lives in Palo Alto/Menlo/Atherton etc. I found those people are the ones who actually did the work to keep them running...and have all the paperwork.
JMO- avoid any 328/325 owned by someone under 40...as mentioned I never really paid attention to individual BMWs since they are all over the bay area until I got mine. Now I notice its 328s driven/abused by dickheads pretending they have a M3, or just general jackass behavior (backing into gas station to cut in line)
Nothing wrong with the Elantra. All these guys want to talk you into a bimmer, but it doesn't sound like you know much about cars, better to avoid something potentially problematic and keep it simple.
This is a great buy.

No Salvage titles so the Mazda 6 is out.
The Mazda 3 looks good though.
>>14620266
I think I'm gonna stay away from a BMW unti I get more car experience.
>>14622073
Going to check out the Elantra today. Seller listed it at 5.5k (1K above KBB). How much can I ask him to go down? It's in an excellent condition with a single owner and service records.
>>14622155
Thanks. The car looks decent, will call the dealer.
>>14622168
So is it good or bad?
>>14622309
The elantra is shit. Bu it's obvious your mind is already made up and you just wanted your decision validated.
>>14622155

thanks
>>14622427
No it isn't.
Please suggest a normal sedan that I can get for 5k
>>14617652
The Elantra doesn't drive terribly well. It's as dull as a Corolla, but it's decent transportation.
If you like driving and like reliability, look for a Mazda3 or a Civic. If you don't need reliability, a Golf or not-current-gen Jetta, or a current-gen Focus.
>>14624303
current gen focus isn't reliable?
>>14624273
The elantra isn't shit anymore. Except for its bad modern design. One as old as the one in OP is junk.

Is the Mazda 3 a good buy?
What year and what is the max mileage I should look for?
What about this 2004 Lexus Is 300
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5466727700.html
>>14624657
If you were going to keep it long term, yes. You'd have trouble getting rid of it with 222k + a years worth of mileage.
>>14624310
Not terrible like the 1st gen, but not great either.
>>14624621
Yes. Any year, really... there's a bigger thread about older Mazda3s going on right now so check there, but they're fine as long as you aren't in a rusty area. (You aren't.) I'd trust them through 150k miles at least. More if manual.
>>14624657
Worth test driving. Try to feel if the automatic transmission is working perfectly or not. At that age, it'll be the first thing to go.
>>14624677
I will be reselling it after a year, so thats a no go for me.
Any other suggestions?

But that car looks so boring and also no service records.
I"ve driven the 2015 Maxima and it drove like shit and was always a pain to park.
>>14624712
Those maximas were the last good ones. Renault got involved after that. Just because the listing doesn't say service records doesn't mean he doesn't have any.
>>14624729
Cool.
Will check it out.

Idk about that. He says it has a v4, and he's selling a perfectly good car because he has one kid on the way so he's a dumbass.
>>14624766
Looks good
>>14624810
Why buy this one if the other has less miles
>>14624852
Thanks.
Which other Volvo are you talking about?
>>14624877
Nevermind I noticed that the other one is an S40 too
Also, are Volvo's cheap to maintain?
Is the Pntiac vibe/toyota matrix the same as a corolla?
Are they good buys?
I found this Matrix
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5482519031.html
Even going to Volpar (volvo parts haha I GET IT) in Santa Clara..or sunnyvale...no Volvos are not cheap to maintain.
just get a damn corolla dude. stop fooling around asking questions you already have decided on
>>14626055
That's the problem
I havent decided on anything except that I need a 4 door sedan.

Got cucked on the Elantra. car was good but the fucking idiot lost his title.

I fucking drove 25 miles to meet him.

I have to ask friends for rides.

Something's fucky about the car.
The car was reported at a dealer auction in 2011 and the smog test in 2015 shows that the car traveled only 1000 miles in 4 years.
What in the fuck?

I have a 2008 elantra; almost identical to this.
It's not a bad car, but it's nothing great. Literally an average sedan.
Pretty reliable though, only thing I've had to do to mine (80 000km+) is replace the battery and normal wear and tear.
