Get one by all means, anon. But you might want to reconsider upgrading it. My sister bought a R34 GTT as she didn't have enough money for a GTR, then she proceeded to buy it a larger turbo, headgasket, injectors, intercooler, radiator, fuel pump, ECU etc etc. While these things might not look very expensive on their own, the accumulated sum of everything and surrounding costs will be pretty much. Hers now develops roughly 400 hp but looking at the total sum now she's well in excess of what a GTR costs and it's still a GTT and it's not going to sell for more. Buy it by all means, but don't blow too much money on it, rather keep saving and sell it on when you have enough. that's my advice at least.

In the UK a GTST is around 5 grand. another 5 in mods and it's a great car, GTRs have shot up in value so it makes sense to me.

Buy an R34 GTT
Very balanced, feels great to drive and still looks better than most fag sports cars.
Put 3inch stainless pipes, dump pipe, front mount, power FC and up the boost to ~11.5.
Perfect power to drive it normally or give it a workout.

They're not a terrible car, but there's a lot of differences (aside from engine-driveline) between it and the GTR, mostly in terms of body/panel components, offset of wheels you can pack under it and I'm fairly sure the brakes are different as well from memory.
BUT- that's sort of why you can by 2 x GTS-T's to every GTR and will probably dump another GTS-T's worth of money into the GTR just to keep it going.
Biggest shit in the GTS is the engine, same complaint I have with CA18's is that the RB20 has a really truly shit usable powerband and rev range that makes it just a pain in the arse to do ordinary driving, you're constantly revving its tits off just to get anywhere as the torque and power is all up in the top 1/3rd of the revs and nothing much happens for the bottom 2/3rds.
Which is fine if you're a racecar, but a cunt otherwise for anything else.
However, its also old as balls, so stuffs always going wrong with RB20's (and CA18s!) and its just a hassle dumping money into a mediocre engine.
Yes, you can tune up an RB20. As to if you 'should' dump cash into it, I'm kind of of the opinion- no.
In all practicality, a front end half-cut of an R34GTT with the RB25DET NEO engine is a much better option in the long run as >>14616808 mentioned, they have a lot of tuning potential for baby's first I6T and you can safely get the up to around 300rwhp without worrying too much about blowing them up.
Plus you'll want to modernise the brakes and rear diff/axles as well anyway.
