Don't skimp on the price, get a low mileage post 85, buy from someone who knows their shit, thorough pre-purchase inspection, have one or two thousand in reserve for possible repairs.
This in short is the best way to fend off /o/'s moneypit meme. Do your research, check multiple car listings regularly to find the best available, get in contact with your local PCA.

It's German, it's old and it's a "sports" car. None of those play well but they do make a fantastic combination for the most spectacular failures yet to see by man.
You will be paying out of your ass trying to keep that piece of shit even barely moving, let alone drivable as a DD.
