Because there are some cases where it's just not feasible to have a car. Public transportation is usually slower and doesn't go to all the place that you might need. Plus, hauling groceries, equipment, or other goods on a bus or train doesn't work out very well either.
90% of car buyers don't give a shit about the stuff under the hood. They want a pretty color, auto trans, comfortable seats, bluetooth steaming, cold a/c, and the cheapest payments they can get. For most people a car is not any different than a refrigerator. It's just something they have to have.
