It's because dexcool "lifetime" coolant, it's pH gets fucked after a decade and it starts corroding everything. Give it a coolant flush. Don't use green coolant in a dexcool system.

You'll be fine dude. Get that dexcool shit out of your car. Just make sure you flush out the entire cooling system thoroughly, don't forget the heater core. You don't want to mix green coolant and dexcool.
90% of the GM cars I've seen have had green coolant in it. It's for a good reason too. Once it gets warm out I'm getting the nasty dexcool out of my s10

Dex and yellow are propylene glycol, green is ethylene glycol. They are fundamentally different. Educate yourself.
You can change coolant types after a complete flush.
I would refill with the coolant specified in the manual (dexcool). While you could use green, that and dexcool form pudding when combined, so the system would have to be CLEAN.
Just do a flush and refill with dexcool.

There's a reason my cars have 263,000 and 192,000 miles and still operate as if they were new. Research, buy a service manual, follow the recommended service schedule, clean and visually inspect and adjust your vehicle regularly and it will still be reliable for the person you sell it to.
The only time the high mileage cars engine has been opened other than valve adjustments was for a timing chain. Same headgasket it left the factory with in 77
