How the fuck does anyone keep up with all the numbers and letters in BMW's naming scheme? It has to be the most convoluted system in the auto industry.
>pic unrelated
>>
I'm gonna guess this is bait
>>
>335i, now 340i
>3.0l
...
>>
as i understand it, the naming scheme USED to make sense, then it stopped.

What do you mean?
First number; 1-2-3-4-5-6 and so on is basically the series and size. Bigger numer = bigger, more luxurious car typically
Second and third number; engine size. 20, 25, 28, 30 and so on. 20 = 2.0 litre engine, 28 = 2.8 litre engine
D after the three numbers; diesel
X infront on the number; SUV/crossover. These all have a single number like the X3, X5 and horrible X6
M infront of the number; sports car, tuned and worked on by BMW's inhouse tuning division Mtech
i infront of the number; electric/hybrid
Z infront of the number; roadster
>>
>>14574829
>Mercedes comes out with c400
BMW: Oh noes! 400 is more than 335! Quick! Rename it!
>>
>>14574858
And then you also have to take into accout that, for marketing (read; jewish) purposes they often call a lot of models something like a 330 while it only has a 2.5 litre engine. Mercedes has done the same with an example being the current C350 hybrid having only a 2.0 litre i4
>>
>>14574858
>second and third number engine size

Nah. Not anymore.
>>
>>14574857
that was an anomaly. it started for real in the mid nineties with things like the 2.5 litre 323i
>>
>>14574858
First number isn't strictly size/luxury based. Generally a given even number means it's going to be a more coupe-styled version of the odd number below, except in the specific case of the 2 Series Active Tourer, which is a Mini-based people carrier.
>>
>>14574871
The problem is these companies have rationalized their shit so there now only 3 or 4 different engines in the entire range,

The traditional system wouldn't make sense because the models are differentiated by output not displacement.
>>
>>14574873
It started before that, the E23 745i was a turbocharged 3.5. I think it was introduced in 1979 or thereabouts
>>
>>14574906
3 is bigger than 5, but a 3 wagon might be "bigger" than a 5-series sedan and so on

Simple way of looking at it, I suppose your answer is quite a bit more correct
>>
>>14574871
it's now basically
>higher number = faster
which i'm sort of ok with but they keep shaking up the lineup, like there's a 320 and 340 in the usa market now.
>>
If BMW used names, what would their cars be named?

BMW, along with Mercedes, was the easiest fo understand until very recently.

>3 series
4-door
>4 series
Like a 3 series, but 2 doors
>6 series Grand Coupe
4 doors

The first number is the series. It used to be so that you had 3, 5, 6 and 7. The 3 series, compact executive. The 5 series, executive car. The 6 series, grand tourer. The 7 series, full size luxury car. They also used to have the 8 series from 1989 to 1999 which was a luxury grand tourer. Back in the day the last two digits were displacement in liters. For example, 335 was 3-series, 3.5L. They did away with that for marketing reasons so they now hype the number beyond displacement, based on a "performance index". For example they slap a turbo and it becomes 10 higher.
The letters are as >>14574858 said:

Except that the d goes after the numbers.
They also had the T for touring and td for turbo diesel.

You're pretty much bang on except the 335 is a 3.0L

Time for some damage control :^)

Too bad it wasn't called "3 series" back then.
>>
>>14576108

i - injection, you dumbfuck... means the car had a gasoline engine

>>14576120

35 used to be 3.5, only recently numbers mean nothing about the engine size
>>
>>14576152
in front, as in i8
injection goes at the end
>>
>>14576152
>35 used to be 3.5, only recently numbers mean nothing about the engine size
not on the 3 series
the first 3 series 335 was a 3.0

The issue is they know their prime market doesn't know about engine displacement.
>>
>>14576375
That's not equivalent at all to BMW's jewry of calling a 3.2L car a 335i
>>
>Ferrari
>365 - cc displacement of one cylinder
>348 - 3.4l, 8 cylinder
