Honestly they should've just waited to release the Z06 and slowly built up to it and just release the Grand Sport (as they are doing now) as a filler until they worked out every single issue.

If it's possible to build a faster car, there's absolutely no reason to not have it readily available sooner and have it readily available to those that want it. Furthermore, it makes building the mid-level performance car all the more simpler since it's basically just the base model with bits from the high performance version.

Grand Sport is a parts bin special. Takes the suspension and aero from the top trim model, but retains the base engine.
I wish this had more power but then it would make the Z06 completely irrelevant. It's already as fast, if not faster, than the previous Z06 while having less power.

GM does this with the Camero too, 1LE and ZL1.
Not everyone can afford/wants a supercharger. There's a big enough segment of the market that will pay out for all of the handeling upgrades but isn't interested in a supercharger.

I'm not in a good place to buy a new Corvette right now (I could afford it, but it would be a mistake), but this Grand Sport is just as appealing as a Z06 to me, for several reasons.
First being that I think a boosted Z06 is kind of sacrilege, superchargers have associated heat problems and turbos require expensive, complex, and difficult to package variable geometry or compound setups to avoid super peaky delivery and lag.
Second being that the C7 Z06 is heavier than the base C7, not lighter, and that's sacrilege.
Third being that a car with adjustable rear suspension can end up a fucking handful way before 650 horses.
It's looks like it will just be a better all-around-er, for the person who wants a stupid fast track 'vette.
