Is it normal for a timing belt to snap at only 131k miles? Mine did today, it's a 2001 Volvo S40 and it snapped while I was driving it around town. The car was well kept too and in great condition, how the hell does it snap like this?
>>
Shit happens
>>
>>14518610
Because you're 30k over the interval.

Damn son. That sucks. Might as well break it down to sell the more valuable parts and scrap the rest of it cause that head is fucked.

Itt should have been done around 90k - 100k.

I do mine on my T5 every 75k just for peace of mind and because it's pretty easy and the belt doesn't cost much. A hell of a lot less than it snapping.

Skipping belt maintenance on an interference engine is in the top 5 automotive sins man.
>>
100k is when I've always changed a belt. We all learn from our mistakes.
>>
Can I make this the new QTDDTOT?
Are camshaft bushings and camshaft bearings synonymous? I'm getting my engine rebuilt and my mechanic keeps telling me to take the cam bushings to the machinist so he can put them in the block but I can't even find cam bushings for this car. For reference it is a 1984 Bronco II with the Cologne 2.8L V6.
>>
>>14518610
Because whiteblock timing belts are supposed to be replaced every 105k miles.
I can see from the picture that your PCV system is also clogged and you're likely leaking at least a little oil out of the cam seals, which was contaminating and weakening the timing belt. That it managed to hit 131k before breaking or losing teeth is nothing short of astonishing.
>>
>>14518984
Call your mechanic to clarify but he probably mean bearings.
>>
Luckily it is a non-interference engine. At least I hope it is
>>
>>14519159
Google your engine. There is a list of popular ohc
>>
You think that's bad?

The Volvo B234f engine has a recommended 30k mile interval. The factory says 50, but waiting till 50 is why those engines are known for grenading,
>>
>>14519159
I just looked up Volvo S40 and it says it is interference (and all DOHC Volvos are), you're in big trouble in little china without a paddle friend. Even non interference belt engines normally have an interval of 90k or 100k.
>>
>>14519170
But those are piss-easy to do timing belts on.
Have you ever replaced a timing belt on a whiteblock? It's a fucking nightmare, especially if you don't have the proper cam tools.

Report back when the interval is 3 years no matter the mileage and belt jobs are engine out, then you'll know how bad it really gets
>>
>>14519188
>But those are piss-easy to do timing belts on.
Oh, you have the manual tension tool that only Volvo sells that costs about 900 bucks.

The B234f isn't the worst engine to work on, but it's by far the worst Volvo engine of era. Way too much hassle for 160 horsepower.
>>
>>14519216
>Oh, you have the manual tension tool
My shop does, yeah. I drive a Mazda truck because I'm not a masochist. Timing belt every 60k and takes about 1.5 hours with no special tools.

>>
dude my volvo specifically says to service at 100k so yeah you ran it 30k over
>>
>>14518610
Here's the procedure:
1.Scrap car
2. Buy car that has engine with timing done by chain

With chain timing it will either last forever, or blow the entire engine up MadMax style. No half-measures.
>>
>>14519307
Not the anon you were initially talking to but;
Doesn't matter. It's a Ferrari. When they designed it they didn't care about how easy or cheap the maintenance could be, because Ferrari makes cars for rich people. If at any point in Ferrari's history you brought up cost of repair or maintenance during the design process you would've been given some very strange looks.
>>
>>14518610
Volvo a shit. my 02 impala with the 3.4l v6 has over 250,000 miles on the factory timing chain.

timing belts btfo

>If at any point in Ferrari's history you brought up cost of repair or maintenance during the design process you would've been given some very strange looks.
They made the 360 belt an engine in job, went to timing chains with the 430 and introduced a 7 year powertrain warranty with the 458, must be a lot of strange looks being exchanged in Maranello

Lol, the i5s are interference, so your block is fuged.
Intervals are every 70k miles on the belts.
I had a 98 s70, sucks bruv, those are good cars.

I guarantee you they didn't do it for the sake of the customer's wallet

It'll take a couple hundred thousand miles, but they still go bad.

Well, yeah... but realistically no one keeps a car for 200K-to-300K miles
Cars get cubed before that stage
>>
>>14518610
Interesting, they ran the turbo piping off to the side. I had to do the coils on an s60 and the pipe runs right over the top, getting in the way and being a hassle.
>>
Depends on the climate, how hard the car is driven, etc. Had a 1.8t GTI whose timing belt went at 80k
>>
>>14523948
My Tahoe's 5.3 has over 220,000 miles on it, and it's running stronk. But I'm well aware that a rebuild is around the corner. Body is solid, just rebuilt the front end. I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. It's crazy how long cars last when you take care of them.
>>
>>14521848

Germans dont want to repair their own nightmares when the new one is out.
>>
Shouldn't one change their belt religiously? Like every 30k miles? Considering the destruction of having one fail, changing a belt often seems like a good trade.

It's German. Germans always come up with the latest tech, but always overcomplicate it. Then the Japanese (and other Asians) buy one and take it apart and simplify the design by eliminating as much as possible moving parts.

A few years later all tech shows up in Asian cars with as much as possible parts eliminated, increasing reliability while decreasing weight.

>>14523932
By the time you need to replace the chain you've saved up enough money to afford a replacement, and then more.

>>14526395
30K? More like 50K, and that's the number for older cars.
>>
>>14518610
>131,000 miles
Faggot, timing belts should be changed every 100,000kms or 60,000 miles.
>>
I pre-apologize for hijacking. I believe I blew a camshaft oil seal. Been smelling a burning smell for a week or so. Yesterday driving to class smoke starts pouring out from under the hood. Quickly parked it at a nearby buddies house. Oil was leaking pretty bad from the timing belt cover. How fucked would it be to drive it to somewhere where I can fix this?
>>
>>14528088
very fucked
oil on your timing belt weakens it
get it towed or replace the belt with a new one where it sits, then have the leak fixed.
>>
>>14528150
Damn I was worried about that. Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully my buddy will let me fix it in his carport.
