Looking to pick up a daily/winter vehicle, leaning towards an SUV Wisconsin winters. Foresters are too expensive or have high mileage, 4runners are either rust buckets or 200k plus with no timing belt replacements or leaky head gaskets.

Xterra/Pathfinder are cheap & realible. Any reason why I shouldn't be looking at these?

Anyone on /o/ have experience with these rigs?

Shut up and buy a civic with snow tires.
>>
>>14477841
Find me a civic that hasn't been molested and under 4k. It's impossible mane.

Xterra is a great choice m8. Just make sure its a 4x4, I dont know what they were thinking when they made 2wd versions.

I use one of these. Northern ontario winters are brutal as fuck. Good battery and good winter tires. These things are pro.
Make sure you get it in a 5spd

>I dont know what they were thinking when they made 2wd versions.

They're for people that live where it doesn't snow and don't want to drive it through mud. Most people that buy these don't need 4wd.
>>
>>14477922
This is what I was looking for. No doubt about the 4X4.
>>
>>14477940
I actually looked at a few of these because they have k20s but I hear the AWD systems in them are pretty piss poor. I'm in Wisconsin so the winters are Siberia brutal at times.

The Saturn Vue is pretty similar. Even has the Honda V6 with a manual but I guess the ride quality is garbage. A shame since they are ridiculous cheap.
>>
>>14477831

The Xterra is great, but the problem is that they're just as expensive as Wranglers, which are better off-road..
>>
>>14478312
u havin a giggle m8

I have an xterra (lightly modded for offroad) and I wish it held its value as well as a wrangler. The "meh" resale value is the reason I'm planning on driving it until the wheels fall off.

>tfw got the emmanuel, too
>>
>>14477831
Do you need an SUV for some reason (kids, work shit etc)? There are plenty more AWD sedans and coupes you could be looking at.
>>
>>14478384
He needs ground clearance buddy. The snows can be brutal.
>>
>>14478384
Kids & I'm always looking to use a truck/SUV to haul items. I trash pick and I was using my summer ride (wagon) but wide items or taller items usually get passed on.

I have an '02 XTerra Xtreme edition. Great ride and pretty bulletproof. 4WD handles well when you need it.

This too, I used to have a late 90s Range Rover(lol realiblity) and it was awesome to not get stuck when I'm traveling in the boonies.

In general, for typical winter driving scenarios ie snow/slush on paved roads, an AWD car with a lower center of gravity and less susceptible to cross winds is preferred to a SUV with a part time transfer case and oodles of ground clearance. I say this as someone with a 4Runner with good snow tires for the winter.

Pic somewhat related, the 4Runner prior to snow tires.

>WHY

I mean, on a practical basis, when I'm down in Mexico for work, the reality is that most of the time, it really comes down to ground clearance and durability much more so than traction, but if your means allow it, why the hell not by the 4wd model? My friend's family had a 1st gen Xterra 2wd when we were kids, in hilly upstate NY on all seasons, it was a mess in the winter. To be fair I at one point was considering a cheapo 4cyl RWD 5spd 1st gen Xterra before coming to my senses.

Ontariofag here, this winter has been pretty mild but CRVs and RAV4s are probably the best all-around choice.

Xterra trannies are made of glass, just remember that OP.
>>
>>14479246
Because I was a dumb ass kid in highschool and bought it thinking I wouldn't be using it for off road then I realized how good of a vehicle it is.. And developed an interest in off roading. Trust me bro if I could go back and buy a 4wd model I would

Never heard that before, only that the gen 1 trucks can have coolant contamination from the built in trans cooler in the radiator. 3rd gen 4Runners like mine have the same issue. Easily bypassed with a aux. trans cooler.
>>
>>14479222
Get a junkyard LSD and you'll be fine for most generic off-roading in places like your picture. Obviously not mud pits and shit, but you'll be able to go on sand and gravel that one-wheelers get stuck in.

Not making this up, I've met 3 separate owners who all had their automatics start to slip on them. Granted, one guy was at 150,000km but the other two were well under 100,000. One guy had to replace the torque converter, not sure about the other two.

And yeah, everyone knows about the contamination, but that is a big issue.

It's too bad Toyota FJ's are still so expensive, those vehicles are fucking tanks. My dad has an '08 with 274,000km on it, and he's only replaced one wheel bearing. Literally no other problems.

>still has the original fucking Panasonic battery too

My RAV4 has one of them too, those things are insane. Figures the eternal jew won't let us buy them here in North America.
>>
>>14479321
Yeah that's what I was thinking being I live in the desert and it's mostly sand and gravel
>>
>>14479335
>still has the original fucking Panasonic battery too
Yea, Panasonic is GOAT. Too bad they don't export their batteries to NA.
>>
>>14479341
My xterra is the first (wait, second) 4WD I've ever had; when I was a kid I hooned the shit out of 2WD pickups in the desert and almost never got stuck. The only time I've gotten 2WDs stuck was if I parked (for work, kek) on the side of a road, with one tire off in the sand. Instant regret.

Oh, and my supervisor at one job got his big ol' ram sunk up to the axle by going too slow across a dry wash. But that wasn't me driving; just me digging to get it out -.-

I do fucking love having 4WD now though; I also got a lunchbox locker up front, and that makes a huge difference.
>>
>>14479361

It's too bad because my fiance's 2012 Camry just had the factory battery take a shit on us the first few cold days in the fall. Pretty disappointed.

And yeah FJs are built well, barring the weird inner fender bending/tearing issue. The lack of visibility and rear seat arrangement is what kills it for me unfortunately. Just make it normal looking like a 4Runner, but keep the manual transmission and washable floor. Done deal.

I live in chicago, and will sell you my rx300 for 6k.

This. Those c-pillars are fucking dealbreakers. I like the concept otherwise.
>>
>>14479366
I hoon the fuck out of mine being its 2wd.. But wish I would have had a 4wd xterra.. Just the added comfort knowing i have 4wd but hey I don't so I'll make due with my girl. But the next vehicle k get
Will be 4wd weather it be a jeep or a truck

I've driven my dad's a bunch of times, never really had a big issue with the C-pillars. Maybe people just get out of the way before I hit them?

I found the pitch-black privacy glass all around the rear to be more difficult for visibility, at least at night. Can't see SHIT captain.
>>
>>14479295
I think you're confused. The gen 2s have the SMOD issues. Gen 1s use the same trans as the frontiers and they have no issues with towing.
>>
>>14479471

Correct, finger/brain slipped.
>>
>>14477831
The first gens are stupidly reliable if you do the 100000 mile timeing belt change

The second gens are reliable if you do the intercooler bipass

If you have a first gen that slips into overdrive you need to add tranny fluid and that's it 99% of the time
>>
>>14482106
>The second gens are reliable if you do the intercooler bipass
????? What are you talking about?
>>
>>14482106

>>14482442

Thanks guys for the insight. I'm really hoping to pick up a clean 1st Gen and after digging through forums as such I know what to look for to beat up on the asking prices.
>>
>>14482624
>Is talking about avoid the SMOD epidemic.
Oh, so he's just a retard who doesn't know what an intercooler is. Don't just bypass the fucking integrated transmission cooler for the external, they're supposed to work in concert. Either buy a later car (09+) or keep a very close eye on your fluids.
>>
>>14477831
Been DDing an Xterra since 2010. Never had a problem with it, great reliable car.

>>14482106

*fueling
>>
>>14482637

I was skeptical when doing the bypass on my 3rd gen, but have noticed zero ill effects such as longer ATF warm up or poor shifting in brutal cold. Considering the hundreds of people that have done this modifications, I'd say it's A-OK to do.

It's a reasonably reliable cheapo shitbox, and probably an upgrade over most shitboxes in inclement weather, but don't expect it to be anywhere near as fun or as well-put together as the equivalent subaru. I've driven both.

A good first gen x will run you between 6-8k right now in three months it will be between 5 and 7k 4000 for a pre facelift model.
