Why aren't you driving a diesel?

Driving fast and recklessly is so 2010. Now it's about mpgs, safe motor vehicle operation and low blood pressure so you live longer.

They're best with manual transmission so you gotta like that.

Are you a fucking retard? I knew a dude who had a Ram 3500 with a cummins, but did some shit to it so it was pushing 700 HP.
Regardless, the reason I don't have one is because I can't afford it yet. But soon.

I was just piggy-backing on some comment.
The point is that diesel cars are boring.
"Spirited performance and nimble handling" is not something that diesels are made for.

>>14477377
The way it's burned makes a difference, because it requires stronger, heavier components, and you can't get the same rpm with a diesel engine. Sure, you'll have a lot of torque, but that's really it? Isn't it?

you can get same amount of power as a petrol engine and you get the extra torks. So what if its heavier? Not gonna be a massive issue and rpm literally dont matter, powerband is smoothed out nowadays anyway

Civic diesel would make close to 100mpg if it was sold in US.

Honestly the main reason not to buy a diesel is the +500€ annual diesel tax. I don't drive enough for the cheaper fuel and higher mpg would compensate that. In Finland it is estimated that you have to drive annually more than 30k kms to benefit from using diesel. And I also have a gasoline powered car and changing a car to another in order to increase fuel economy rarely makes sense.

finland must have some big gallons, i know the british one is diffrent from the american too. but alas the civic diesel does around 45/50 mpgs barely anyone has one as what's the point when you can get a fiesta diesel that does 70mpg and petrol cars have been pulling 45 mpgs out the ass since the late 80's
>>
>>14481169
>Civic diesel would make close to 100mpg if it was sold in US.
This is the stupidest thing ive ever read. Are you a conspiracy theorist too?

There is more to pollution than fuel economy or money. Diesel is dirty and more harmful to humans health. Fuck dieselin passenger cars, why do you think its taxed? diesels cannot meet petrol engine emissions. not even close
>>
>>14477348
There's the SLK 220CDI. Sure it's not a very good sports car, but it's still a sports car. I'm sure there's at least one diesel variant of the SLC too, but I can't be bothered to look it up.

There are a few borderline cases - various sport saloons and their coupe variants, various hot hatches the Audi TT, the Peugeot RCZ, the Alfa Brera, The Octavia VRS TDI...

>They get to speed much faster than the petrol counterparts
lolno. Every car both you and I listed comes with a petrol variant which accelerates considerably faster. Hot diesels are a thing in Europe because they're cheaper, not because they're better.
>>
>>14478932
You can actively die by sniffing petrol exhaust fumes.
You can smell burning oil from a two stroke diesel but that is why they are no longer made. A four stroke is an equivalent of a charcoal smell, that is if it does not have a catalytic converter. But because particulates are denser they mostly linger ground level to your feet.

But do you know why you are wrong? Because sciance states diesel combustion does not force elements to fuse to generate energy. That is why there will never be a trace of carbon monoxide, the only molecule poison of emmisions that breaches the stratosphere. Still 90% vehicles present in both U.S. pre emmision reduction and modern is still petroleum.

No, it's quite nice for commute and stop and go traffic but it's no fun since you get inital kick at 2krpm till 3krpm and it gradually starts to die off and when you reach 4krpm it's like you're towing 2 ton trailer behind you.

It's exact opposite of something like Honda engines.
>>

My 2006 Chrysler 300C sounds like your average car, maybe a bit lumpier but no way sounds like a tractor. That thing also screams quite weirdly when you gun it, but yet again doesn't sound like a tow truck.

When driven normally, it's actually extremely quiet inside the cabin and not all that loud outside either.
Still the thing has enough power and MUH TORKS to blow past any wannabe ricer faggot in their VW's and Hondurrs. BMW's are also quite prone to get left behind every now and then

Nothing wrong with is since fuel is so expensive in Europe but Americans could argue that you get V6 performance for V8 hemi price.
>>

The OM642 powered 300C was only sold in the EU, basically a Mercedess Benz dressed up as an American. The diesel V6 loses out only slightly in torks and clearly in HP. With a decent tune the diesel V6 is up there with the 5.7 Hemi while consuming less fuel and having a ridiculous amount of torque.

Nah, 3.0 diesel pushed to V8 power output, it's not even possible with stock injectors and turbo and even if you get there it would be as reliable as 1000hp V8 turbo.

Diesel in passenger cars is just answer to specific problem of high fuel taxes that exist only in Europe.

My prediction is that US will just jump over diesel phase and go straight to electric.
>>
>>14482042

>>
>>14482059
>The key is selling before expensive things start to go

On that 300C, it's the SWIRL and EGR that are worrying me. I always wanted a big ass Chrysler, like a proper American fullsized car, but had to cheap out because a petrol V6 sounds lame as shit and the V8's were stupid expensive. Had to make do with the diesel V6 and because it's a Mercedess engine, which was lauded as like super reliable and shit like that.

I do also own a '76 Mercedess 300D NA, that thing is ridiculously slow, but I don't think there's like anything that could break in it if you do even something resembling maintenance.

>>14482068

Only real problem I've heard of are intake flaps, don't know it those are called swirl. The problem with high mileage is that many things can go wrong on diesel. Have two friends that lost their engines. bmw 530d injector got stuck and burned a hole in cylinder, another one had runaway engine on 525d (blown turbo seals, intercooler full of oil) that caused him to hit another car and then engine proceeded to destroy itself and auto gearbox.

ERG is nothing to worry about, cheap to replace however most times they fail because intake becomes totally clogged with soot.

I also like american cars, rented V6 Charger while visiting US, so cool compared to euro stuff we have here.
>>
Diesel cars have a small but rabid fan base that suck diesel dick, wrecking the used diesel market. Otherwise I would own one. They're ideal for most American driving conditions.
>>

>>
>>14481831

>>
>>14482102
Yeah, intake flaps are SWIRL flaps. They aren't doing anything bad themselves, they actually help the engine work a bit better and ever so slightly improve performance. The thing is that the EGR is the one ruining them, you don't recirculate fucking diesel soot, that thing doesn't burn anymore. It just soots the insides of the engine and ruins them.
