So what went wrong? Why was this car a terrible failure?
It's ugly as shit. Especially considering the previous MR2.
>>14475532
W20 is the ugliest MR
only children like the bland poser Ferrari style
>>14475532
I think you're looking at another car.
But personally, I think it's because Toyota is known for boring workhorses, not a midengindled, fuck, midengined racer. I'm keeping the misspell because it amuses me.
>>14475513
No 2ZZ version for SANIK SPEDZZ

Hence why the OP one is disgusting.

It was gutless for the highway and didnt have the characteristics of a ultra light similar to a Lotus
It weigh the same as a Corolla from that year...

Citation needed.
>>14476306
So the guy who did the Type R swap to his EP3 did it wrong? All he needed was just a couple of simple mods? Maybe a sticker?
>>14476376
Corolla of similar vintage weighed 300lbs more. So for that Anon sitting in an MR-S it'd be the same.

That's literally the economy version of the Civic.
>>14476551
Kind of like how the 1zz in the MR-S is the economy version of the Celica?
I've been thinking of jumping on a MR2, but I'm looking for a car that trains the driver - lacking any kind of driver failsafe like TCS, ASM, ABS and possibly power steering, and I'm not above tearing out an A/C to cut some weight. After all my long term goal for a car like that is make it something that can race.
Or is there a better car I should know about?

ABS doesn't get in the way, but you'll be glad to have it if you do need it. It's the only modern convenience I like having in my car.
>>14475552
this post pleases me
>>14475513
a) It's ugly.
b) The automatic was a sequential manual that was the worst of both worlds (and realistically, you can't get good sales figures without making auto drivers happy).
c) Can't fit an autocross helmet anywhere unless you take the spare tire out, or grocery bags, or a small carry-on suitcase. The Miata has a big enough trunk to serve as your only car if you're single. The MR2 doesn't.
>>14475513
It's both hilariously impractical and, as has already been pointed out, not exactly stylish, which means it isn't fit to be a dd for most people, and couldn't interest casual drivers looking for something to pose in like the MX-5 could.
I'd say that makes it very much an enthusiast only car, but even then many enthusiasts would prefer either a coupe or a fair whack more performance, which you could have for he money. So really it only appeals to a specific subgroup of enthusiasts. I find the best way to think of it is as the car for people who couldn't afford a Lotus Elise.
Saying that, I love mine.
Didn't perform well enough in stock form to be a performance car.
Wasn't practical enough to be a daily car. With a miata you can get a weeks worth of grocery shopping for a family of 4 in the trunk.
>>14475513
The engines for by brother's car still don't work.
anyone got the cute zzw30 pick?
>>14475513
Its ugly and people stopped wanting small cars with no space.
>>14481405
it's not ugly it's cute
>>14483220
Some people find Xenomorphs cute too
So get a MR2 Spyder, a hard-top, and a few simple mods (2zz-ge swap) and you've basically got a lightweight RWD skid machine for the touge???
Why didn't I think of this before?!?
>>14475988
They look great with a hard top and low spoiler, just not in that color, IMO that gray is hideous and I like gray, the white used on these cars is kinda shit too

Becuase it should've been a coupe or at worst a T-top.
It needed to be different from the miata not compete against it.
>>14475513
>So what went wrong?
It only came as a convertible and it looks like a poor man's Boxster. And with how retarded MR-S prices are now I'd be better off buying a used Boxster for a midship with more bite.
>Why was this car a terrible failure?
Too much competition at the time and an ever-shrinking interest in sports cars. Why buy this over a Miata, or an S15, or an RX-7? It's sole appeal was the MR layout and was outperformed by its predecessor.
I wouldn't mind one but I'd hardly consider it a dream car.
