The horsepower has actually been reduced from 167 to 155 lol. 12hp is a big difference in such a light car with not much power to spare to begin with.
And everyone shits on the toyobaru for not having enough power but it still has 45 more horsepower than the ND and they're both 2.0L engines.
The ND needs 170hp stock from the factory and the toyobaru needs to be lighter.

It's still faster than what most people are comfortable with, seeing as the average car is a midsize 4 cylinder sedan or crossover, or a lumbering SUV. The whole point is that the Miata is a two seater roadster, which is not what most average joes and janes look for in a car. So they make it as enjoyable and savory and fun as possible while also making it as non-threatening as possible. If the Miata had too much power, it would scare away customers that just want a fun, easygoing, affordable convertable sports car.
Plus, RWD, too much power, and an inexperienced driver means accidents in inclimate weather and other low grip driving conditions
