Ive got a 2002 7.3 f350 and the oil filter is absolutely stuck on there I broke my circle oil wrench. Channel locks just bent the filter in and scratched the filter. Then I went to the extreme and put a screw driver through and it ended up just ripping the filter. I've searched around and haven't found any new good ideas. Any suggestions
>>
>>14457191
Screw driver was your last bet.

Strap wrench plus retard strength

Tried all three none have worked and that walmart filter wrench didnt work even with it tightened with vice grips

Maybe one of these
>>

those dont work on the oil filter type i have its circular all the way down
>>
Clean oil off, smear locktight on inside of tool, place on, wait 5 mins, dont be a weak bitch and twist it off.
>>
The strap goes at the base of the filter. Not in the middle nor the bottom. That's the reason you're crumpling it.
>>
>>14457234
It digs in to the side if you apply enough pressure

Was it a HF wrench you broke?

Ford is built tough. HF tools aren't.

Lmao, my thoughts exactly.

I've been spinning it the correct way I promise lol
its a single wheel f350 its got the same motor as an f250 and i did the f250s filter right before this one

I use a /jp/ version of this. If its too small I pack it with a strip of old timing belt teeth facing out.

Now you have oil all over the outside of the thing you better clean that off.

As a last resort cold chisel and hammer to rotate it. Do not damage the block!
>>
>>14457257
but if that doesnt work im fucked
>>
>>14457191
have you tried wd40?
>>
>>14457328
alright ill clean it with brake cleaner and get another stronger oil wrench and see what happens
>>
>>14457355
yes sprayed it in the tiny gap between the block and the filter and lightly tapped both with a hammer to try and get it to seep better
>>
>>14457356

>>14457334
Ther is no way that won't work though, you are fucked regardless. I went through this and as a last resort tried the "screwdriver through the filter" trick and it just cut the filter in half. Made that tool and after fighting with it for 2 days it was off in seconds. Unless it's welded on it will work.
>>
Op why do I get the feeling that you're doing some stupid ass shit?
>>
>>14457366
I'm 100% sure its not my strength thats the problem i change tractor filters all the time without any problems
>>14457369
alright i guess ill have to get to fabricating then are there any dimensions i should know before hand
>>
>>14457383
probably should make the tool in the 3rd dimension
>>
>>14457378
Considering I've done this for almost the entirety of this trucks life ever 5000 miles and it has over 350k now im pretty sure im not fucking it up
>>
>>14457356
Mine has a steel strap and rubber inside as standard but I add the timing belt for small filters.
>>
>>14457393
there aren't too many auto shops near me where i can get tools closest one is a O'reilys an hour away
>>
use a ratchet strap. slide a long, strong, screwdriver under the strap and tighten it down. this will give you leverage on a strap that wont break like one of those lame ass rubber ones.
>>
>>14457212
This. Worked like a charm when mine was stuck. WD40'd that shit and just gave it all my strength.

If your on a farm have you got welders, steel and stuff? Perhaps you can /diy/ one.

You don't happen to have an old pipe vice in the farm shed you can bolt on a plank?

>>14457383
You just need to know the spacing of the holes in the oil filter base so the bolts can go into them.
>>
>>14457437
I am on a farm and can build all kinds of shit ive got some clamps that could work like you suggest
>>
>>14457448
Okay thatd be easy id just be measuring the spaces on the new filter i have
>>
>>14457448
Only problem i have is there is very limited space because of the placement of the leaf springs
>>
>>14457387

Can confirm.

Mine was 2d but I set it down and could never pick it back up.
>>
>>14457506
Lmao
>>
>>14457471
>just be measuring the spaces on the new filter

I would save your trouble till you have cut the case off the old one just in case its a different build.
>>
>>14457521
Good point i have a motorcraft to replace the napa
>>
why has no one said, PIPE WRENCH
>>
>>14457557
Good luck finding one big enough to go around the filter yet small enough to fit in the area provided
>>
>>14457557
Worth a shot but I reckon it will just squash it or rip it given its not all around pressure.
>>
>>14457580
At this point squashing or ripping it arent an issue
>>
>>14457191
sell it and get a prius

a 12" should be good to get it off. Should just BARELY open to the right diameter
>>
>>14457649
Im sure the filter would still be stuck lol
>>
Ive gotten it to wiggle but the casing is completely ripped off so tomorrow in the light looks like ill be fabricating a wrench that locks into the holes on the top of the filter

Should have tried a rubber jar grip. These things work wonders on stuck filters.
>>
OP don't just pull on it, you need to give it quick but hard taps like an impact would. you could use the filter pliers and tap the end with a hammer. you could also try heating it up a bit

next time lube the seal up pretty good and don't put it on so fucking tight, doesn't need to be more then hand tight
>>
Heat. Warm it up. Just don't start an oil fire.
>>
Ive found that channel locks are the best bet for getting them to turn. You can allow them to bend the filter in a bit, as I this helps with grip.
>>
>>14458272

>>14458232
>>14458201
I dont even use a wrench to tighen the filter when i put them on i just use hand tight i do put oil on the gasket and i did try a heat gun even though i left the truck running for about 30 mins before attemping to remove the filter channel locks just slipped and bent the filter probably because of oil my best guess is either it got locked with age because 5000 miles is about a years worth of driving because i rotate vehicles or it hit something while drving on the farm
>>
DID YOU EVER GET THE FUCKING THING OUT? DON'T LEAVE US HANGING.

PICTURE OF THE FILTER AFTER
>>
>>14458356
well your hand tight is too tight then, you only have the snug them up. no matter what you're gonna be fucking up the filter to get it off but that really doesn't matter. just wipe the bitch down to get that oil off and grab that bitch with filter pliers as hard as you can and twist

i work in the heavy diesel field this is what i use for the always stuck on filters be it oil fuel or air.
>>
>>14457191
Buy a better metal strap wrench and grip it as close or ideally on the top rim of the oil filter. The rim is solid metal so it won't bend. I had to help my brother in law out with his 7.3 powerstroke in literally the exact same situation as you. The filter body was ruined but I was able to break it loose in just a couple of minutes.
>>
So what causes filters to get stuck like this?

I've been doing my own oil changes on my truck for 5 years now and never needed a wrench. I put a dab of old oil on the seal, thread it on, and once I hit a point of resistance give it one more half turn. Have yet to have the slightest problem.
>>
>>14458562
heat would be my guess. to be more exact going from hot to cold and back again. but i work on semi's. and dont look into why unless threads are crossed from some asshat shadetree mechanic.
>>
>>14457355
>not pb blaster

The fuck is wrong with you people?
>>
>>14458534
ive looked at these but my simple mind cant figure it out.

so i use the vice grip purpose knock offs
>>
>>14458586

>not fluid film
>>
>>14458597
well mine attached to my 1/2 in ratchet. run the strap around filter base. and back through loop the set ratcher to loosen and go from there. simple. and the 2in tow strap they use for the strap will never break unless cut. ive had a 4 ft breaker bar on it before. amazing tool for stuck filters.
>>
Get a long piece of steel tube or even timber and attach to a large set of multi grips/pipe wrench.. You need leverage to crack it initially then it will probably come off by hand
