>Top Gear fetishises the totally unnecessary consumption of fossil fuels in the name of sport, entertainment and feeling better about your premature ejaculation disorder; it normalises dangerously fast driving; it contributes to the hunger for more and more cars that we neither need nor can sustain; it treats the sheer act of moving a machine as if it’s a display of heroic bravery and skill; and it paid Jeremy Clarkson’s salary for over 25 years. In this context, disliking Top Gear because it doesn’t include enough women is a bit like hating Trident because those submarines simply don’t have enough room for your jumpers – it rather misses the point.

>I am not, as is probably fairly clear by now, a huge fan of cars. Mainly because, as we read last week, cars are literally killing us. Their fumes are one of the most significant contributors to air pollution, which causes people to die of heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer. Air pollution is a factor in at least 30,000 deaths each year in the UK as well as soaring rates of asthma and other lung diseases. Two-thirds of petrol cars break the carbon monoxide limit, 10% break the nitrogen oxide limit, while 95% of diesel cars emit more nitrogen oxides than is legally allowed. Which is before we even get into the number of people who die in road accidents. Road-building, to make room for the hundreds of thousands of people who lock themselves up in a heated petrol box in order to grunt their way to work every day, is destroying the British countryside; as Karl Jilg’s famous illustration, commissioned by the Swedish Road Administration, shows, cars eat up public space like Jabba the Hutt, leaving the rest of us clinging to our thin strips of tarmac like flies on a wire; and the need for oil, from which our petrol and diesel is sourced, is fuelling some of the world’s most bitter conflicts, dangerous regimes and corrupt industries.

>implying there's a problem with nuclear power
The only issue with nuclear power is that dumbass polesmoking hippies won't let us build new plants. We have issues with the current ones because they're living long past their lifespans. New ones are significantly more advanced, but we can't build them because of "enviromentalist" groups. So we build more plants which rely on coal or natural gas instead of nuclear or solar.

It's more safe than gas or coal.

Mechanical failures which led to coolant escape, a fucking valve got stuck.
>b-b-but muh Fukishima
It took an earthquake AND several tsunamis to finally take down that sucker. Some of the reactors are still in an operational state, but for obvious reasons aren't used. Most places in the exclusion zone have already been deemed safe to return to by scientists.

Cars aren't that bad. Two-strokes are. Mowing your lawn is the same as driving your car from New York to Los Angeles.

This. Which is why I, as an Agriscience major can't stand to hear when these environmentalists say we need electric cars WHEN WE HAVE VEGETABLE OIL TO CONVERT IT INTO DIESEL FUEL. Lithium Ion batteries are destructive. The electricity she used to power her computer so she could type that out also contributed to more coal burning. Engineers should not work on Hybrids and Electrics because they are detrimental, and don't save on money that much. We need engineers to perfect Diesel.
>>
>>14442199
Biodiesel is the best solution. Worked with it as my mech engineering project, and was amazed at how easy it was to make
>>
>>14442174
Any sources that could confirm its safety or at least future prospects? It still sounds risky and not worth it to create more plants.
>>14442163
Haha. Wrong word. Idea still applies, lithium and platinum are still hard to mine and require not only massive amounts of energy in the form of gas powered trucks, but destroy habitats.

I think a lot of people miss the point of electric cars. It's true some of the electricity used to power them is provided by a nonrenewable resource that pollute the atmosphere, but the power plants that convert them into electricity are able to do so much more efficiently than an automobile.

That happens here too. Still, drying ponds are not super polluting. They even offer habitat for migratory waterfowl. As long as they don't drain the lakes too fast they're good.

That's because as efficient as they are, they spew poison and ash at a much higher rate. California doesn't just want them for some petulant reason, it's because there's a big ass bowl in it that traps whatever is dumped into it.

Also, Gen IV nuclear reactors can't melt down unintentionally. Can't remember the details, something about the use of coated uranium pellets instead of rods, but in the event of a mechanical failure, it just slowly cools down.
