What is everyone's salary vs. the car they bought?

I'm going to be starting my first job this summer at $61k and need to buy a first car. I am going to have 100% disposable income and want to buy a Mustang GT, but would rather not spend $32+k on one over the next three years. Alternatively, what are some nice muscle cars I can get used for cheap?

How about you wait a bit to make sure you don't get fired faggot. I see this shit all the time in corporate. Some new faggot comes in making a decent pay check. A month he he rolls up in his new car. Fired because he just doesn't fit in after three months. Ruined in less than half a year.

ALWAYS wait a MINIMUM of one year. And if you have that much disposable income just save up and buy it cash.

Mustang is okay. I would just save and buy one cash in a year or so on the used market. You can also get a viper in the mid 20's. You can get a z06 (c6) etc.
After taxes that's only $43k a year or so. You should really sit down a budget your total saving per month AFTER ALL expenses. Including going out, lunch, rent, bill, insurance etc. I was making $75k a year my first good job. Money didn't go as far as I thought after rent and bills and shit. I mean it was okay but not amazing. ESP when you are dumping money into saving (like you should).

I don't want to buy a car, because it'll put me in a lot of debt. But I need a car to get to school. But I can't get a job because I'm going to school full-time.

It's a vicious cycle, so I have to bike 10 miles to and from school daily.

My parents were going to give me $2500 for a car, but instead they decided to rob a bank and I got emancipated to my grandma... who then died a year later so now I'm with my aunt.

OP, save up some money and go out and test drive anything and everything that interests you. If your income is truly disposable you should be able to put a nice chunk of cash down on whatever you decide to buy and finance the rest to build up your credit. Just be smart about it and you'll be fine. Don't pay cash on a new car, it's fucking retarded as you can usually get a better deal financing it and paying it off early.

>>
>>14431706
That's pretty nice dude.
I know I'm going to go the Academy in NY anyway, both from other people I've heard and my own personal goals becoming an officer would be the ideal route.
If you've gone what can I expect from that?

Secondarily, how are schedules managed? Do you get to pick your trips? Does it go by officer/mariner seniority? How many trips do you have to do a year to meet a minnimun sort of quota?
What's the average pay for say, a month long trip?
I know it varies depending on your cargo and what not, but in general.
Finally, do merchant Mariners only work national trips or international trips as well? And if the latter, how long are you generally in port and do you get to go to shore?
Apologize if that's a lot of questions.
If there's anything else imperative you can think of I'd be glad to hear it

Again, I work with gyrocompasses, and technically I'm a merchant mariner... but I don't do any long trips. Mostly down rivers a few mile markers and direct the ship to do what I have to do to properly calibrate the magnetic and gyrocompasses. Then I take a pilot boat (or helicopter if it's a drill ship) back to shore, and I'm typically done within a few hours.

I didn't go to any academies, I simply applied through my regional center with the USCG since I already had my TWIC card and all other credentials, and got it back in the mail.

That being said, I do speak with a lot of full-time MMs when working on their ships. They get paid between $40k-$100k depending on their positions. Typical crewmen and technicians will be making on the lower end. Many of these guys work internationally (I'm in Texas, and I work along the Gulf Coast), and are in and out for a month or two at a time. Captains and other officers will be out for even longer periods.

Sorry I couldn't answer all your questions, those are things I genuinely don't know or can't recall.
>>
>>14431792
Thanks for the response even though you could only answer half.
That's kind of what I had figured but I wasn't 100%.
Going as an officer I'd probably be the closer end of the pay scale but in the end it doesn't matter as long as I can support myself.

Could I get a bit more detail on how you got into your specific line of work?
Not to over simplify it but it seems like with some training it would be a fairly easy and or mundane job and as you said, with some incredible pay.
Don't get me wrong I don't need money to be happy, but if there is the potential for more.

What kind of classes or certifications are needed?
Do you have to have a fairly good knack for math?

>>

I calibrate magnetic and gyrocompasses. That's it. While it sounds mundane, it's really fucking important, and VERY FEW people do it in the entire country. I learned how to do it whilst in the Coast Guard as a quartermaster years ago, but when that rate was absorbed into boatswain mate, they stopped teaching it to people. After I retired, I needed work, so I started a company with a former Coastie and I've since taken over.

It's hard, I've taught plenty of people how to do it, but each job is different. Not a lot of math needs to be known, but a lot of knowledge of magnetism does. It's a very specialized profession much like masonry, and like masonry it's dying.

For adjusting the compass, there's really no certs you need besides the ones needed to enter ports and ships (TSA TWIC card), my captain's license, and I needed to learn how to survive a waterborne helicopter crash to work on drill ships. Any additional certifications, exams, etc are on a job to job basis. Some oil companies will have you watch a few safety videos and take an exam before they even let you near a ship or drill ship, others will just let you board with said above certs.
>>
>>14431848
That's pretty interesting my man.
Seems like a pretty good gig.

I might take a look into that.
Is there anywhere you're aware of that one could learn to calibrate such things given the coast guard no longer does?
Pretty sure I've seen you in another thread talking about this on here.
At any rate seems pretty decent my man. Kind of ridiculous something so important has so few people doing it but I guess it helps increase the jobs per person
>>
>>14431866
Right now, I don't know who else might teach it. My best guess would be the Merchant Marines, since the Navy or Coast Guard don't anymore.

Some companies might teach it, but every time I encounter their technicians they do really sloppy work (or no work at all since it's hard to verify).

>>14431818

Thanks for the advice.
If they do teach it in the MM (well enough and I'm good at it) maybe after my required 5 are up I could go solo working on that stuff.
Or at any rate, a company that does teach that shit would probably be more likely to hire me with the previous experience.
Thanks man

About $1,400 to $2,200 per month depending on how much I work. I basically have no expenses except for insurance, gasoline and electricity. The rest is split between food and disposable income.

I have an old Mercedes C280 which I barely drive anymore and use a Lexus HS200h and/or Honda CR-V for work.

Probably going to get my own car next month to replace the aforementioned vehicles, which will be an Accord Hybrid. I really want a Mazda 6 diesel but doubt they're ever going to fucking release it in the US. I was considering waiting for the new Acura variant of the HR-V or the new Honda plugin hybrid but I don't really want to wait that long.

I want to get a 2011 Jaguar XJ V8 as a fun car, but it probably isn't a very sound financial plan even though I could make the payments, so I'll likely just get an old Camaro as a fun car until I can afford to buy the used Jag it outright.

I don't really know my salary since I'm a server. I make $10/hour + tips and my hours are different every week.

I bought a 2015 Fiesta SE with $8K down. I still owe $4.8K on it. My plan is to build credit and eventually buy a house after I get a real job.

Living on your own and working while trying to get an engineering degree is fucking hard. I'm 23 years old; how am I still in school? At this rate I'll never graduate, start a career, buy a house, and build project cars. Kinda depressed.

Financed because at 2% I am making more money keeping the capital in my accounts. No such thing as a free car, but when the finance rate is less than your investment returns it's effectively free capital at your disposal.

I make roughly 32k with benefits thanks to Uncle Sam. I own a 2012 Challenger R/T, a 1990 Dodge Ramcharger SE, and a house. I've never had money troubles. Even less now that my wife makes nearly 92k a year. Be doing even better when I get to separate and go to school for mechanical engineering.

Most cars are worth more than a months salary so I don't really see your point. Still, saving up and not buying useless shit you don't need is key. Not going out every week-end also helps.

Just find something in the BLS with good growth and high earning potential. If you can, take an internship or shitty foot-in-the-door salary while still in school to get started in that field. Don't be shy about quitting jobs every year or so for your first few years in whatever industry.

That's really it.

35k although it ends up being like 25K take home after 401k contributions, obamacare, welfare, feed the poor, medical for the rich, social security that you will never get.

I just bought a 2015 FZ07, although insurance from my last wreck paid more than half of it. So i'm effectively paying $3k for it.

Little no expenses.

>>
>>14438221
it is, but the ecoboost is fast enough for my taste, and handles better (allegedly, I havn't driven the 5.0)

one of my demands in a car would be that it had air conditioned seats. i work in automotive seating by trade, so I'm pretty picky about them. I really like the two-tone white/black color, and they're super comfy. my only gripe is the cut pattern is boring compared to a lot of the stuff I work with.

i'll get around to putting in a bigger intercooler and a tune after I've worn out the 36k warranty. don't listen to people who say nonsense about "the dealer having to prove your mods caused the failure" it's your lawyer vs. theirs, and theirs is on call.

would i prefer the 5.0? probably. wasn't worth $6k to me though.
>>
>>14438556
how is that relevant to financing?

it depreciates at the same rate whether you paid in cash or not.
>>
>>14438584
Six years? That's a bigger commitment than joining the matines. Financing isn't nearly as bad as leasing though. There are just cases of people making absolutely retarded decisions through financing.
>>
>>14438584
you are still paying for the car, when it is worth less then the money you still owe

Whatever though, if you dont mind it really doesnt matter, sounds like you got a great deal at 0% interest

35k hotel front office manager, bought a 2006 Scion xA for $11,900 in 2012.

Regret but not because the car is bad. I really like the car. I just had zero credit so I put $3,000 down and paid a 24% APR for 2 years before I built enough credit to refi at 3.5% and adding only 9 months to the loan.

Looking back I wish I just spent that $3,000 on a car as opposed to a down payment.
