I'm in the market for a new head unit for my classic car, after about an hour of looking at different brands like Clarion,Sony,Alpine,Pioneer and so on I am very disappointed to see all the head units they have to offer and covered in chromeish plastic and have LED's everywhere... These things look like they had been designed in the early 2000's by space mutants..
Anyone have a basic clean minimalist head unit they can suggest for me? Price is not a concern. Single size no and fancy screens preferably black or dark grey.
>tfw everything is piano black, covered in millions of buttons, with blue and chrome accents and colours because MODERN DESIGN
I just want something to look cheap and silver-plastic like my car's cheap silver-plastic interior, not something cheap and black trying to look more expensive than it is.
>>14426756
You mean like this...? Fuck I hate the way this shit looks... Does this blend into any car at all?
>>14426737
Have JVC KD-X50BT.
It was the least rice I managed to find but still far from OEM look.
At least backlight is full color spectrum so you can mach it to your dash.
Parrot Asteroid is pretty close to OEM look.
There are Becker models that have modern features (bluetooth), have classic look but are very expensive.
i'm surprised someone hasn't make a kickstarter for some kind of headunit with interchangeable normal-looking faceplates to blend in with any era of car
>>14426773
that looks wacky
>>14426737
Go to lmctruck.com and look in literally any catalog they have. They have a universal head unit that doesn't look like someone spilled a box of LEDs everywhere.
>>14426778
it's already here
>>14426771
I have that except head unit in my car; came with it when I bought her. It's pretty okay, doesn't like finding radio stations, though.
>>14426786
*exact
Dynavin is the only company I know of that actually makes an effort to make their head units look OEM.
You have to keep in mind that the target market for aftermarket head units is 16 year olds and niggers.

This is the same head unit but for Volkswagen.
>>14426814
>>14426808
Cant wait, when it comes I will instal it in my 86.
I basically want one that looks this cheap and in a similar colour. But I want a headunit with excellent build quality.
Are my needs impossible to meet?
>>14426832
You might be able to find some piece of Chinese garbage that looks like that but not with excellent build quality.
>>14426834
I could just buy the original head unit, then.

If you have OEM head unit with CD changer controls you can get digital changer for it with SD/USB/Bluetooth functionality.

>>14426841
My car doesn't have that shit. I don't need all that. I want a premium headunit that can play MP3 CDs, but looks cheapish so it fits in with the rest of my interior.
>>14426844
AM isn't. FM is fine.
Got this thing for $25 shipped from China.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuJNi_4DoiE
Replaced led's with green ones, added jack for external microphone for BT HF, repainted knobs and silver strip to flat black.
Works surprisingly well for that kind of money.

Got one for my 78 C3, it looks nice, not too flashy, and I didn't have to cut up my dash to install it. My only regret is not paying extra to get bluetooth, the aux cord works fine but the bluetooth would have been nice. Its my first purchase from retrosound and so far I'm satisfied

dynavin is god tier but they are pricey, the N6 is like $600, completely worth it for the OEM look and features though

I have this one too. The lights switch to green, which matches the console lighting in the Hyundai I bought it for. It lives in my Honda now. I think it looks OK in a black dash.
Pic related. The opening in the Hyundai console bezel was too small for some goddamn reason, so I ended up enlarging the hole and painting the damn whole thing flat black while I was at it. Factory color was a sparkly gunmetal that I didn't particularly care for anyway.

I know it doesn't have the looks most here want but the Kenwood KMM264 is worth a look.
Genuinely excellent sound quality, plays FLACs, and is cheap as shit. No CD mech though.
There's the KMM257 and 261 models too (and probably others too) which sound just as good but the 264 will play all FLAC files not just the 16-bit ones.
>>14428085

I've had this exact problem with receivers. One of the best looking ones I found was the Pioneer DEH-80PRS (pic related). It's designed for hi-fi audio too so if you have good speakers installed it should sound nice. I would've bought it myself but it was out of my poorfag price range.

I was going to go with the retro looking FM radio from LMC but heard the quality wasn't there, and it would have been almost $400 CAD.
Im running one of these in my 79 F150. Has bluetooth, front/rear aux, usb, built in sat. radio, weatherband. Pana Pacific, forget the part number, got it out of 2014 Western Star.
I suggest going to a tractor trailer dealership, I work for Western Star/Frightliner dealer and can order in from a decent selection of minamilist radios.
>>14426832
what car? they might make devices that plug into the back of the radio in the cd changer port that break out into an aux cable and ipod connection. I bought a flush mount cable, cut it, crimped it to the aux cable of the adapter, then drilled a hole and pushed it through.

Go to a junk yard and pick out an old hifi unit. The older you go, the simpler the circuitry is. It's fairly easy to splice in an aux cord to anything older than 1980 or so. Just bring a battery so you know it works.
>>14435170
what about a decent sounding usb thingybob
>>14426792
>pioneer DEX
now thats ncie
>>14435186
most 80s head units I found don't have usb. If you mean a USB wireless FM transmitter, those usually sound like shit, even worse than a cassette adapter. A wired FM modulator inline with the antenna will sound as good as the strongest station you can pick up via radio, but that's adding more parts you need to buy. Simplest method is to solder an aux cord into the internals of the head unit itself, right before the amplifier. This is really only possible on older units, though. New shit is too tiny and digitized to easily figure out.
get a goddamn line driver. hook up your speakers directly to the amp, bypass the stock radio.
line driver proves you a volume knob, and your choice of an aux in.
play off your phone, ipod, whatever.
your choice of amp will let you control presets.
your choice of speakers
stock headunit will remain untouched, and non functional, but will retain the stock look
hide the little volume knob anywhere you want.
its the only way to maintain a stock look and have good audio.
I have it, shit is great. i only listen pandora/google play, or stream from my home PC via smartphone.
>>14434622

The metal body of the car acts as something of a faraday cage, dulling signals that pass through it. Using the body itself as an antenna doesn't work because interference from the car's electrics would be fed directly into the radio.
