Anyone else have a strange affinity for small, hard working, engines and vehicles?

What's /o/'s favorite under-250cc bike or under 1000cc car?

Used to own a 2000 Honda NSR125. It made around 26hp from that 124cc 2-stroke engine. It was a fast little bike.

My knowledge of under 1000cc cars is too narrow to pick any favorites shamefully...

90% of my driving is small towns and English countryside roads, so having anything bigger than 125cc is pointless. I'm sure a bigger engine would be better and get me up to 70 for that missing 10%, but the drop in fuel efficiency and the extra insurance costs and weight just isn't worth it in the long run.

Small, fun, great for tight streets in urban cities, tons of looks, great mileage (30mpg+), and a shit ton of looks from people who are clearly overcompensating with their oversized 20ft+ trucks.

>>
>>14427898
you know they just made shitty detuned engines because gasoline was cheaper than water basically and using existing engines blocks and materials was cheaper than designing new ones. They were also detuned to last forever and no one cared about horse power in the 1950's. Cars were 5 tons and you needed torque just to get around town. Gm was building all aluminum amazing engines for aiplanes in ww2 so they had the tech for the price but cars were sold to be just as disposible back them as today.
>>
>>14426244
Idk but my stepmom has a 50cc chinese scooter with 15000 miles. The brand is gabella i think
>>
>>14427931
No doubt that's all true, and I don't blame american automakers for doing the most feasible thing, but my point was the engines were underpowered for their displacement.
>>
>>14427931
This is why i also always laugh when I see someone my age clinging to some old piece of shit. Mustangs and cameros were built to last 5 years just like any car today. My el camino was fun yes but all that shit is just living in the past and contantly using nostalgia to make somthing better than it is. There just old shitboxes with big engines.
>>
>>14427956
Oh yeah well thats just an objective fact lol of course they have a horrible power to weight ratio. But i just jumped in this and im lit
>>
>>14427941
Chinese bikes are really long lasting. Better than they have any right to be. A guy had a Chinese bike up to 60,000km before the engine seized up due to an oil leak, and the only mechanical work being done by the guy (who knew nothing at the start) in his back garden.
>>
>>14427974
Maybe since the chinese can't into making something properly they just overbuild the fuck out of it?
>>
>>14428000
I think it's more that they're sometimes based off of rock-solid Suzuki and Honda engines.
>>
>>14428094
This, its all just old copied honda, suzuki and yamaha shit and when your using old tech you can only fuck up so bad
>>
>>14428107
I know that's pretty naff, but at the same time why fix what isn't broke?

Chinese bikes with Suzuki GN engines may just be the same old, but that also means that parts and information are plentiful, they're wordlessly simple to work on, and there's only so much that can even go wrong with the entire system. You don't have to worry about the atmospherics messing with the fuel injection computer when there's just a carburettor that can be picked apart and put back together again and work like new.

Plus the generation of engines that these Chinese bikes are often based on are designed to work for a living. When Honda made the CG they weren't thinking of 17 year olds who want a bike for a few hundred miles before they get their full licence. They were thinking about letting them loose into a world where that engine simply has to work now and keep working for some time to come.

Of course this is all down to Japanese ingenuity, not Chinese, but the Chinese are the ones keeping such a thing alive, even by total accident.
>>
>>14428151
oh your totally right, I was just saying that for people who think chinks are designing and building some super reliable scooter and not reverse engineering as usual
>>
>>14428151
Also Chinese bikes are honestly priced.

Unless you think a fuel injection system is worth £1,000.
>>

With the new EU laws you wont have a choice.

And I think there's a law coming in (2020, I think?) that means that a bike wont even be road legal without ABS or fuel injection, even a 125cc.

What's the point in a 250cc bike?

>not as fuel efficient as a 125cc
>not as much power as a 400/500 but the same consumption

I know this is a rather narrow look at them, but why did no one in the engineering department comment on how pointless even having "250cc" as a category is?
>>
>>14435322
>same fuel consumption as a 400/500
No. My 250 gets 3.5l/100km when pushed hard and 3l/100km when not. It's also like 40 kg lighter than a 500 and actually capable of highway use, unlike a 125
(desu I've been getting like 4.2 l/100 km recently but that was probably because of the tires that were way beyond their life because the moment I put on a pair of radial Michelins my consumption went back down and Lord knows I've been pushing it way too hard for sanity
