Because of "enthusiasts", The one who aren't really. Those guys that talk all sorts of shit about how amazing their car is. Or talk about other peoples cars they don't own. But use as an example to insult someone. All the ricers you could have ever imagined are the cause.
Americans like to benchrace. High HP, tork, straight line speed, acceleration, drivetrain, etc. Hondas don't look good by those standards and typically don't win traffic light races so people make fun of them.
What makes it worse are the boyracer fags who think swapping on a fart can and destroying their suspension will make their civic into a racecar. It makes the car and the community as a whole look like a joke.

I'm American and I love Hondas. Over the years I've owned Subarus, Toyos, and Hondas and Honda is the one that keeps me coming back. Specifically the late 80's and early 90's models. Granted, I've never owned an American car, but I don't completely hate them either. I even considered picking up a Foxbody that looked like an decent deal until I went to look at it in person and saw the headgasket belching out stop leak. I'm guessing the type of people who hate on foreign brands just grew up in closed minded and/or racist households.

Well... actually a shitload of Hondas get sold in America every year. They DO like Hondas over there. And that's fine, they're well-built cars. Probably better built than Toyotas.
That said even if you own a Nissan or Hyundai these days you'll still have a car that will last 10 years with no problems. And Mazda's have always been as reliable as Toyotas and Hondas.
