I have $6-7k CAD (the shit currency) to spend on an suv and I'm leaning towards 4th gen 4runners
>dat 2uz v8
>kinda a land cruiser prado
>Toyota reliability
>ignore the timing belt/cracked dash & manifold issues

Is there anything better under $7k CAD ($5k USD) that's as capable or better offroad?

also offroad general I guess

Plain and simple if your gonna rock crawl IFS is out of the question. CVs break, I know this because I watch a friend with 33s on his taco and a front locker. Its a guaranteed to blow a CV.

Anyhow if you're just gonna overland or mild offroading then IFS is fine. But crawling rocks requires a solid axle for starters, then eventually lockers.

Might be a bit tight budget wise, especially if that money includes maintenance and modifications. I recently walked away from a very clean 2 owner 115k mile '03 V8 Sport in a awesome jade green. The reason? Udnerbody rust. The bodies hold up great on these, but the frame and suspension and fuel/brake lines were gnarly on this thing. Seeing as that you're in Canada, I'd make this my utmost priority in terms of the search for the right truck. 4th gens with the V8 really don't have any weak spots as they age except for rusty brake calipers, but rust in general makes working on it a nightmare, and stuff like brake lines is expensive to replace unless you do it yourself.

I'd recommend a third gen 4Runner with your budget, or even steer you towards a Mitsubishi Montero Sport. $4500 should buy a decent early (96-98) 3rd gen, maybe even a Limited with the factory rear locker. The same money will buy a nicer/newer Mitsubishi, although the mitsus simply don't hold up quite as nicely over time and are more prone to some engine oil leaks and valve stem wear (nothing too scary).

I bought my rust free '96 Limited with 99k miles for $6350 3 years ago and it's definitely in rare condition for the year. It STILL took about $1500 to totally catch it up on maintenance and refresh the brakes/suspension. Awesome truck though. Stock, it has better clearance and angles than a 4th gen, and mine has the factory locker which is awesome. I highly recommend it. 20 mpg consistently in mostly highway driving, the 5VZfE isn't a powerhouse but it makes good low end torque and is as reliable and long lived as the sun.

>>
>>14424472
Probably had a lift installed on the yt one
>>
>>14426688

Yeah I think they don't nearly get the respect they deserve. Optional locking rear diff, good geometry, massive freaking rear diff, like a 9.5 inch carrier. I feel like they give up a bit in overall build quality and reliability to the 3rd gen 4runner, but when they can be bought for less than half price compared to a similar year 4runner, having to do a bit of fiddly work like valve cover gaskets is no big deal. Stick with a later truck with the 3.5 to get some good power, the earlier 3.0 is probably okay with a stick shift but somewhat sluggish with an automatic. Older ones still had leaf springs, I think 99 or 00 and up got coils out back. Not as much aftermarket as Toyota's here in the states but thats part of the fun, lift kits and forums for write ups are out there.
>>
>>14426683
The 44a and 30 can handle 35s just fine and limited at 37s. The engine is actually good, I know 3 guy that have built there rigs around the WJ and they are so fucking sick when crawling. Also they do fine on the highway.
>>
>>14426895
The 3.0 or as a friend calls it the 3.slow, its an okay engine. Seriously lacks in power and once you put 33s on it you will suffer trying to get up to speed bad and even further well its just not a good idea.
>>
>>14424584
>>14425343
I'm around Toronto, the cheapest 4th gen I've seen is $4k and most expensive is $13kish, seems like they cost more in other areas for some reason. There aren't may for sale though. I was considering an xj for a bit but I keep hearing contradictory things about reliability, buy they are waay cheaper
>>
>>14427227
NO IT ISNT
seriously 1 fucking google will tell you what a peice of shit the 3.0 is. you couldnt pay me to own one, especially considering the 3.4 is worlds better in every single aspect
>>
>>14427938
eastcost so yes like >>14426000 said, look for rust because thats the biggest plague in XJs. are you good with your own maintenance and wrench savvy? if so then you wont have a problem. This is coming from a JK owner, you wont go wrong with a XJ, you got the space to pack alot of shit in it and its very offroad capable plus the perk of a front solid axle you will fall in love with rock crawling.
>>
>>14427960
Uhhh If you reread what I said once you put anything above stock it really suffers. Its an okay engine. It runs and can last a long time. It doesnt wear out its lower end like the 3.4. The friend I was refering to has 236k miles on and never blew a head gasket or had to do engine work on it.

Its not a failure of an engine but the 3.4 is a great improvement. But its on the same level of the I6 power wise, yet the I6 will go twice the distance as the 3.4.
>>
>>14428006
3.4s go through bottom ends????? since when? i've literally never heard of one doing that and im around toyotas. never had a 3.0 that didnt shit the bed in under 200k. 236k is really not anything to brag about. i know at least half a dozen people with 3.4s that have 350k+ with no engine work beyond valve cover gaskets and intake cleaning
>>
>>14427938
Your biggest fear will be rust being where you are.

The I6 is a super reliable engine, my I6 has 235k miles on it and has never been rebuilt or overheated.
The AW4 automatic transmission is very reliable and can take a beating. Often people put an aux cooler in for it.
The AX-15 manual transmission has a good first gear (3.83) and will take wear nicely. The AX-15 is the same trans as the R150F used in toyota trucks.
The NP231 transfercase is 2HI/4HI/N/4LO. You can shift to 4hi on the fly and with ease. Its a pretty stout case and will take a good bashing. The lo ration is 2.72:1 which is better than older toyota trucks (2.57:1).
The Dana 30 front axle can handle up to 37 inch tires before it will break. Look at finding one with the high pinion. As it way better when lifting to adjust pinion angle.
The Dana 35 rear axle. Well to be honest its a shit axle can only go up to 33s. 1987-1996 used the D35.
Chrysler 8.25 rear axle is superior axle and can be found on 97+ year XJ. It can handle up to 35s.

Those are the facts, I'll let you decide for yourself. If you have anymore questions I can answer them.
>>
>>14428031
Yeah had a friend kill not one but two 3.4s that had about 140k miles on it. The bottom end I guess just gave up on life.

>3.0 shit the bed under 200k miles
>engine goes beyond 200k miles and still doesnt shit the bed
>looks like there is something to brag about
>>
>>14428059
>Dana 30 front axle can handle up to 37 inch

Dude what? You're literally the first person I've ever heard that from, source?

I put a D44 on the front and a Ford 9" on the back of my XJ with 35s
>>
>>14428116
I wouldnt recommend it. Thats the danger zone. That said I've watched someone skinny pedal a d30 with 36.5 inch M/Ts (37s) up rocks. Also watched another put 35s on a D35. Lets just say I was very concerned for the axle shafts. But thats why we all carry spares; like 2 for the front and 2 for the back. A D44 in the front is optimal for anything 35s and over. I like the Ferd 9inch, but would rather put a D60 in the back.

The V8's sucked, they were prone to manifold issues, got TERRIBLE gas mileage, and had a fucked sulfur smell that no one in human history can identify.

Get a newer one with a V6.

I'd say get an FJ Cruiser, but those are still 3-4x more expensive than what you can afford.

>tfw 243,000km on a 2008 FJ with offroad pack
>tfw one single issue with it ever
>piece of transmission line corroded
>replaced with piece of rubber hose and some clamps

Shame they stopped selling them in North America, now they're gonna be selling for "I know what I got" prices.

Also should be noted that V8's have a timing belt, not a chain. People have experienced premature wear on the belts, and it's an INTERFERENCE engine.

Some people have great luck, others suffer $1000's in damage. I'd look for something with a chain, I know the 4.0L in the FJ has a chain.

Fuck just take out a loan or something OP, buy an FJ.

Canadians aren't as stupid as Americans, people who actually use their vehicles off-road in Canada use Toyotas.

Failing that, you see a ton of heavily modded little Suzukis and the odd frankenstein XJ.

Wranglers are for fucking roadqueens.
>>
>>14428216
KM2s have a finicky side wall last run I did I watched a bronco rip the sidewall at the beginning of the course. Same bronco 2 hours later rolled the bead so we had to refit it. Besides that on 2 other occasions I've been on runs and the tore their sidewalls. I guess its a thing with them. Mud tires I've had luck with Goodyear MTRs and Toyo Open Country M/Ts. Always get certs, those fuckers pay off so much.

Light bars I cant even recommend to much, I just buy them off guys that I run with. The market is really over saturated with. Theres some cheap chinabars on amazon that are 52'' and curved with spot and flood options.
>>
>>14428231
I'm a university student, I want to pay for something in cash and as much as i like fjs they are out of my range. I know about the 100k mile timing belt issues and rare manifold cracks (was in op). Gas mileage is better than a 3rd gen with a smaller engine though, how does it suck? Are they not rated at the same mpg as fj's?
>>14428059
Thanks for the info, are WJ's worse than XJs? Why are they worth nothing now?
>>
>>14428244
JKs and JKUs when built can do a lot. I've seen JKUs with the curries 60 and 35s just demolish obstacles. JKs are limited to 37 inch tires as the COG gets to high and will risk being too tippy. If you wanna run large tires one needs to get the 4 door for added stability.
>>
>>14428244
Mines a 91 I'm not about the Jks and soccer moms
>>
>>14428283
I'll tell you what, the WJ has a stronger unibody and more safety features but weigh a lot. If you wanna end up building a WJ it will cost a lot more because there are not a lot of suppliers for aftermarket stuff. Theres also the issue that you will have to end up making a beefy 242 or 231 tcase as the 249 and 247 really wear out on trails and will die fast if you put them to work. The 4.7 in the WJ put out a lot of power for what it is but at the price of having reduced reliability when compared to the I6.

In all they cost more to modify and to build. But they also look fucking sweet and watching a WJ flex over rocks and have like 3 feet of travel in the rear is very very appealing.
>>
>>14426675

The 70 is the "HD" one.

Ever since the 70 everything after has been a soft roader. And that started with the 70 Prado which was a light duty 70 and the prado went it's own way as a capable pleb mobile and all the others softened up to compete with Range Rovers.

The 70 stayed similar to how it was and has been constantly been purchased by red cross and mining companies for the reason that they are significantly better than anything else on the market for real world work or offroading rather than special situation rock buggying or feeling comfy while your wife cucks you in the back of your 200 with your buddies.
>>
>>14427960

We have hundreds of 3.0's here and they run up and down mountains all day long.
>>
I like how all these offroaders quote

>my vehicle went 200,000 miles with no issues so it must be good

If they were really offroaded they'd all be shit heaps right now. I have a 1998 Frontier KA24 that has not even ticked over 80,000 miles but I drive it every day for hours and the thing is on it's last breath. I have rebuild the whole suspension twice, the body is pure patchwork, it has a newer 2006 H233B becuase the other diff is all twisted up after being dropped on a rock and ripped off sliding down a construction road, welded on leaf mounts because the rear end took them along for the ride, body work is swiss cheese, frame is surprisingly OK, I only need a single head light so thats all she has, one wiper, no mirrors, engine I haven't serviced in years as the head has been going since 2011.

When you actually offroad something you don't rake up any sort of mileage in quick time. So anyone who can quote how reliable an offroad vehicle is cannot exclaim how many miles of road traveled before any issues appear because that has nothing to do with a good offroader or even reliability in a totally different environment. Where the hell do you find road salt out on the bush?
>>
>>14428407
When we speak about mileage we are speaking about the drive train components. And you can and will rack up the miles. My trip tomorrow is 400 miles one way. I also daily drive my rig, so theres plenty of use. I dont have a trailer queen like others. However I watch people with trailer queens destroy their rigs because they about half the time zero patience and foot down throttle mentality.

Also no one seriously buys a brand new vehicle to do trails on so buying a vehicle with 150k already on it is pretty normal. Then driving and wheeling it. You can clock up the miles pretty quick. I do about 14-17k miles a year over 5-6 years that 150k becomes about 230k miles.

Body damage is nothing though because I can pop out dents, build armor, or cut n weld.

Also you have an I4 Nissan engine. I wouldnt be surprised at it dying trying to wheel it. But I think theres a bigger problem with your engine that is causing it to slowly die. I've only had to rebuild a suspension 3 times on my 96 XJ. Factory, then 3 inch, then 6 inch. Factory was the only thing that actually needed to get replaced so I have a feeling its the quality of parts.

Also as a soil scientist theres quiet a bit of salt in the soil where I am so mud will eat the body and frame. Also whenever it rains its nasty.

Okay, the 'luxury' LC, then. Happy? No one cares about your opinion about how the only 'real' LC is the 70. It's nonsense. It's purchased by companies because it's fucking cheap and comes in a pickup version.
>>
>>14428494

Right so the majority of those miles of yours are on road

Also saying an i4 Nissan engine while die when wheeled. How do I manage to get by going 18 years off road where in my on road average is 20 kmh in my hiace and that is "open road" to me. I probably run 5 km/h in the frontier and that is fighting terrain all the time.

Your 14k a year is not 14 k of wheeling that is for sure

14k like 80/20. I cant see an I4 pushing 33s or 35s upto highway speed and not suffering then being able to hold probably 3k rpms when crawling.

I drive my pajero around in Kazakhstan where almost all roads are trail-tier and covered in salt. I often need to lock diff and go into 4hlc just to leave my driveway. And my car has got almost no rust (except for the exhaust which is kind of rusty). Rust on the underside just gives a general picture of how the car was maintained.

Are you willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for better off-road capabilities? Then get an Iltis.

>Easy on gas
>Sexy Cold War looks get all the mad pussy
Only problems? Thin milfag tires aren't the best on sheer ice, and every time we tried mounting weapons to them, things broke from the recoil. But as a kickass off-road/Recce vehicle, they were great. I had so much fun with them, I'm probably going to get one to DD.

4.636 gears help from the get go.

Hell Suzuki sidekicks have 5.125 gears in anything 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual.

Just because your jeep can barely put down any power through its road style gear ratios doesn't mean that the rest of the world doesn't offroad with half the power. Your offroading is a pass time and a "life style" while mine is necessary to put bread and salt on my table.

Also i4 is too much of a blanket statement seeing as some jap of road commercial vehicles have large 4.0l - 5.0l i4's and they redline at 3k rpm and have stupid low tractor gears.

Hell even Mitsubishi pajeros come with 3.2 i4 diesels that are pretty powerfull

Why drive off road when there are roads lol. Never understood this.

Or why people leave a road to go off road. There's a perfectly good road! And you just left it?! And you could have gone a ways further to find a road going to your destination but no you veer off road.

It has a timing chain, I live in Canada where we get temperature extremes far in excess of anything you silly cunts do, and my FJ has over 240,000km with original factory belts. Original battery too, which is fantastic considering I start it 3-5 times a day, 5-6 days a week.

Fuel economy is what you'd expect from a 4.0L engine powering a +4000lbs vehicle, not terrible but not great. Suspension setup is absolutely wonderful, it handles better than any Jeep on-road and has great traction off-road.

Never been to Australia, looks like an awesome place to visit. Shame your government is a bunch of cucks and most Aussies are liberal crybabies or inbred retards, though.

Cheer up m8, one day you'll get a real job and be able to afford a proper vehicle like an FJ. Til then, just keep wrenching on that Wrangler. You can probably keep it going for another couple years if you drive it 1 day a week.

:^)

He's spewing meme horseshit, probably the same type of guy who cries about Ridgelines any time /o/ has a truck thread, even though he's never touched one.

Much like Ridgeline owners, FJ owners don't get upset about what others drive. For some reason there's a really obnoxious Jeep subculture that a lot of people buy into, and it requires them to be an ignorant cunt 24/7.

I expected the FJ to have more cargo room. It seemed underwhelming to me
