>French Master Race Edition

A thread for our beloved econobox pocket rockets. Talk experiences, ask for advice and questions and generally shitpost about the Fiesta ST.

Previous Thread: >>14375304
How was your weekend?

>What is a "Hot Hatch"?
A Hot Hatch is a manufacturer produced, performance oriented variant of a standard hatchback, designed for improved handling, increased top speed, acceleration and generally enhance the driving experience.

>Are all Hot Hatches FWD?
No. Whilst most Hot Hatches are FWD, some are AWD or even RWD.

>Isn't FWD shit?
No. Just because you can't get the arse out by stamping on the accelerator doesn't mean you can't have fun.

>Aren't Hot Hatches just for Europoors?
No; with the launch of the Fiesta and Focus ST in the US, it seems like the Hot Hatch is beginning to take of on the other side of the Atlantic, but Europoors definitely have more choice.

>Is the Fiesta ST actually good?
The Fiesta ST is one of the best small hot hatches on offer at the minute; so yeah they're pretty good.
>>
So OP does anyone other than Ford make hot hatches?
>>
>>14412456
Probably a good 75% of the first world's car manufacturers.

Renault were arguably the best in recent times until the shit-show that was the Mk4 Clio RS. Now Ford seem to be in the limelight. The Golf R/GTI, Peugeot 208 GTI, Suzuki Swift Sport and Abarth 595 all seem to be very good offerings too.
>>
>>14412486
The Mk4 clio with that gearbox is a disgrace. Atleast the Megane RS is still king :3

So far i've only dealt with older hot hatches, a 106 S16, a 306 2.0 (rather warm than hot hatch) and I drove a Golf mk1 GTI once (the hype is real).

So what are the modern ones like the Fiesta St like? I imagine (compared to ratty Peugeots) lotts of noise isolation, mid range torque and sheer grip. How's the steering feel? Does a Fiesta ST feel top heavy? It certainly looks like that

Does 90hp and RR make it a hot hatch? Anyone know if there's gonna be an RS trim? I've heard different things from different people
>>
>>14412566
Don't think a RS is gonna happen, and since it's the smart three-pot 90 hp is probably about as much as you'll get from the factory.
Maybe Brabus or Elia can offer some basic mods for another 15-20 hp.

I'm kinda curious how these Twingos drive to be honest family. Maybe 90-110 hp is plenty? Comes with a manny tranny after all
>>
>>14412603
From what I heard the electronics are obnoxious and you can't turn them off.
>>
>>14412620
Fuse number 15 IIRC.
>>
>>14412566
>>14412603
There were shots of what is believed to be an RS test mule, but nothing has really come of that since. There's probably a map available for an extra 10-15 HP though, assuming it's the standard 0.9TCE engine used across the Renault range. I'm wondering if anyone has tried a K4M RS swap yet.
>>
>>14412678
Also conjectured to be a ForFour Brabus mule.

I don't think they're gonna make one any time soon. Renault cucked themselves with the Clio 4 and they're focusing on releasing millions of Megane RS derivatives and special editions.
>>
>>14412497
The Megane RS is about to die though. And the new Megane is fat, and if the new Megane GT is anything to go by, it'll be shit.
>>
>>14412541
> I imagine (compared to ratty Peugeots) lotts of noise isolation, mid range torque and sheer grip
The Fiesta ST is based on a platform from 2007. It's a fun car but it's nowhere near as "refined" as its newer rivals — road noise is a bit more noticeable. It's probably the most fun you can have for £20k and under, though, if you must have a newish car.

When you start heading to £25-£30k is where the real madness starts.

The most fun you can have with a newish hot hatch for under £20K is a low mileage 2011 Clio III RS Cup.

its a nanny state, people love being cucked by the govt here.

I get depressed when i think about how I will never even drive my 140hp car to its limits legally on a road here outside of a delimited highway in the outback.
>>
>>14412678
The engine is the same 900cc 3cyl used in a variety of cars, however, it is tilted on its side in twingo. I would imagine the same ecu manipulations used in e.g. Clio 4 apply to twingo. I wish they did a RS version of the Clio 4 estate.

Not a hot hatch but long story short I can get a car on the motability scheme. I right now share a Rav 4 with my dad and have a Yamaha YZF-R125 as my own. I'm looking at getting a Corsa with the 1.0T engine. I can't get anything bigger because I'm 20 and under the scheme, they insure you and the max horsepower is 115, which is more than fine, this is a free car for 3 years we're talking about. Is there anything else I should be looking at that's new?
>>
>>14415421
My old team-leader at work had one. Seemed pretty decent. Make sure you spec it well and do NOT put black wheels on it. Everyone has the Ltd Ed spec, so I'd go for the SRi if that's still a thing. You can make a Corsa look half decent and tasteful if you do things right.

Your's is a little newer than mine. It has the different headlights and grill. Mine is a 1994 model, which is the very first model with a fuel injection engine, also the same engine as the Twingos at the time.
>>
>>14416329
Mine is the 1.4 "big block" (i.e. a stroker version of the 1.2) e-series with TBI. First gen Clios are getting more and more rare taking into account that it was among the top sellers throughout the 90's. They are solid cars and easy to maintain with tight budget. The remaining special models like 16v are starting to increase in price. Many of them were lost in early 2000's ricer boom.

Get the Fiesta 1.0T Ecoboost. Trust me, it's an infinitely better car in every single way except ICE gadgets.

Except half of the Corsa's ICE systems work from screen scraping, so unless you have unlimited data, if you're gonna use your phone to run the Corsa's ICE, prepare for an arse-fucking come phone bill time.

Does a 1.3 turbo japanese shitbox from 1994 count?

164bhp in a car that weighs ~860kg dry feels gud man.
>>
>>14416439
Mine is an 8v though :_;
I got no airbags, no powersteering or central locking, the weight reduction makes up for the lack of power a little.

I know it's a slow car, but Renault made a fun chassis and I have lowered suspensions. So taking corners with it is pretty fun. I like the pedal setup and shifting too.

It was probably owned by someone as a second car as grocery getter. 22 years old an only 125k kilometers on it.

I wish mine sounded like this though.

I think the Fiesta dropped into the 11s quicker than the FoST did, and if you're in NC you can have the 4 door version. The Focus is really only ever so slightly larger on the inside and it feels cramped, where as the fiesta feels roomy for a small car.

Rallye's didn't used to be expensive to buy, even as little as 5 years ago. I haven't checked recently, but I do not doubt that they have also gone upin price in this weird bubble thats been forming these past 4 or do years with a lot of classics.

This bubble is also evident with MK1 golfs. 5 years ago I was in college looking at getting a first car. A good condition MK1 GTI was £2k MAX. Now they're easily double that for a meh example. It's like this for so many cars now, the time to buy is slipping away before they become too much money to be worth it. Find something obscure and buy now, I don't expect this bubble to go away any time soon

I owned one, a 56 plate silver (Sept 2006-March 2007). It was fun, but the engine feels a bit woozy at high rev ranges because intake piping and manifold were deliberately restricted so the car would sell better to younger drivers. The rear suspension set-up made it feel a little too loose for my tastes, but it did corner very well.

All in all it's a great little car with a largely bulletproof engine and with some mild mods can be hitting 170-180hp quite easily. Should you get one, the first thing on your mods list should be a decent rear anti-roll bar.

I'm going to chip in a vote for Citroen C2 VTS - Slightly quicker to 60 than the swift, mine gets an average of 39.2mpg, same N/A 1.6l 5MT setup, incredibly short gearing, parts are incredibly cheap, the cars themselves are incredibly cheap (decent examples with low mileage going for less than £2k), low kerb weight (1080kg or something like it), nimble chassis, huge aftermarket including turbos/throttle bodies/a 3.0l V6 conversion, and reliability-wise mine's had almost nothing wrong with it in 40,000 miles (it's now at about 82,000). Exhaust bracket rusted away but that was only reason to get a stainless steel catback - for £240, brand new and fitted.

It's a good fun car for under £2k but I've had mine 2 years now and I've started to outgrow the performance... but I expect I'd feel the same with the swift or the twingo.

It was my first car and I had a budget of 6k. I really liked the styling of the 205 and even the 306 styling seems better than 206. I lowkey regret my choice.

"When first launched the GTi had a 1.9-litre single overhead camshaft engine with eight valves and fuel injection that put out just 75 kW and 142 Nm. The European models had around 100 kW, the difference being due to a lower compression ratio used on the engines here, along with a different cylinder head with different porting to cope with the exhaust emissions that were in force at the time.

The lower output meant the 205 GTi was something of a disappointment, but there was always the handling to compensate for the loss of power.

A five-speed manual transmission was standard and drive was through the front wheels.

There was also a long list of standard features to help make up for the lack of grunt. Air-conditioning was standard, as were 14 x 6-inch alloy wheels, central locking, fog lamps, a leather steering wheel, power windows, and a four-speaker radio cassette sound system.

Unfortunately power steering wasn’t standard, it seems that the Peugeot engineers couldn’t work out how to include air-conditioning and power steering in the 205 when they did the conversion to right-hand drive and they decided air-conditioning was more important for the Australian market. The result was heavy steering.

An update in 1991 brought power steering and air-conditioning, and a welcome injection of power.

The engine now had 90 kW and 152 Nm, which boosted performance to a much more acceptable level."

It's all about a cars looks imo. there are cars faster than a brz that arent as attention grabbing. Moreover I dont get how I rarely see people get pulled over for speeding, like you said drivers doing 10km over all the time and no troubles for them.

terribly impractical and expensive as fuck to aquire and keep on the road
Both not traits of a great hot hatch.

Not a bad car though, especially those early 130s.

Why? German hatchbacks are costly on repairs as opposed to American and Japanese hatches.

You'll probably find the size and shape a bit odd, the Megane feels huge, especially width wise. The power delivery will also feel very different.

I feel sorry for you Ausfag.

The used 205 market in the UK is a mixed bag. you can get a GTi with either engine for about £1500, but it will have had the arse ragged off it. The minimum you see on them is at least 130,000mi.

Then agian, one's just gone up on ebay, £23k for 50.000mi on the clocks. It's in good nick, but not £23k worth of good nick

Here's my french.
Mods - uprated suspension, gearbox and engine mounts, cat back exhaust, rstuner, rear arb, bilstein coil overs, camber bolts, oz racing ultraleggera's.

Pretty fun 2bh, even if it wrecks my back after every drive.

Considering selling and getting a Focus XR5 for that 5cyl soundtrack, also more suitable for a daily commute.

What did you do to the gearbox? The 172/182 gearboxes are pretty bulletproof for the car it's in and can handle way more

Nothing to the actual gearbox. Just uprated gearbox mount by ktec.

I've actually heard the opposite about the gearbox. Mine has been fine so far, though has a small leak, which is pretty common among the 172/182's.

Chilled as fuck atmosphere.

Good 3 days or so of drinking, seeing club members and catching up, chatting cars, looking at cars, looking at all the different clubs etc. Just really laid back.

Events on too (such as drift rides etc), and food and car related shops. Oh, and a massive fireworks display at the end of the show every year. Sometimes there's special guest cars; 2015 had the HKS Group A R32 GTR, which was a very, very nice wakeup call, having that start up next to our club stand :D

Only problem is that you can't get on club stands etc if you don't have a Jap car. You'd have to park in visitor parking.

Fucking what? Comes with climate, sat nav, full leather, cruise, parking sensors, led headlights and shit as standard. What more do you need? 29k for the manual. It's only slightly more expensive than the manual Golf R, 3k more expensive than the Golf GTI.

The AMG Merc A class and RS3 are much more expensive, but they're cars knocking on the door of 400bhp. They're a leave above the 30k hatchback group.

The Leon Cupra 290 is probably the best bang for buck, but dat RWD in the 1 series makes my dick diamond hard.

Nigga I could sell my car for £7,500 right now and easily get it. £5,5k was mad cheap. Might mod her, keep her N/a but aim for 250bhp. Don't like blown VTEC, feels like a sacrilege.

So, Citroën Saxo VTS 16v.
These are pretty cheap around where I live, and I know it's basically a 106 GTi with a bodykit and slightly different gearing.
Took a ride in a 106 GTi a few times, that thing was a lot of fun, but how good are they to live with? Are they easy to work on? What are things to look out for when buying (I'm assuming rust and failing electronics)?

They are fairly solid cars and can actually stand rust surprisingly well. Electronics could cause some troubles (coilpacks, ground wires etc) and torsion bars tend to snap in high mileage Peugeots.
>>
>>14433626
Okay, so I guess the coilpacks are a thing to replace right away, just to be sure, and I'd have to make sure the torsion bars are still in good shape. Thanks.
>>
>>14433738
Those are general issues with French econoboxes of that vintage. It is almost impossible to monitor the condition of those parts. I would recommend to replace them when they break. Also e.g. pattern coils could last half of what OEMs do. Just acknowledge that there could be issues. I would put the effort in finding a clean and unmolested example and do preventative maintenance where possible.
>>
>>14433797
Fair enough. I did hear they're pretty easy to work on from a guy who used to own a 106 GTi, so they seem like pretty good beginner's cars.

So here's a predicament I'm in.
I am lucky enough to have won a sweepstakes I entered for last year in March. I have the option of choosing 1 of 2 cars that are being offered to me, free, with everything paid off. Thing is, they are both automatic.
It's either

>2016 Toyota Yaris base model hatch with 4 speed automatic

What should I go for? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Mazda2s are a ton of fun. I had one for a few years, threw some basic mods on it, and hooned it around the canyons like crazy.

I traded it in on a Fiesta ST when I started hungering for more power and a bunch of other stuff, and realized that the ST was a much easier solution than trying to turbo my 2 or whatever.
