eh. i actually found them kinda neat.
my parent's 1996 nissan has automatic lights. my grandad's 1986 corolla even had them. yeah it's not hard to turn them on/off yourself but are you going to tell me you've never left your lights on by accident? this makes that impossible.

they actually do have an ambient light sensor so the lights are completely off during normal daytime. in any darkened environment the park lights come on, and when it's dark enough, the headlights come on. nissan did a very good job of programming the sensor because the point where they came on and off was always spot on.

i don't see why anyone would actively steer away from this. it comes standard on many vehicles and can be turned off easily.
>>
>>14254779
You still need to turn them on and off at dusk and dawn when it's still bright outside but the sun is low. Or during rain and possibly fog, I assume? And unless the sensor is instant I would turn them on before going into a tunnel as well, don't feel like them being off for a second or two... I often see cars do that, and I assume those are the ones with automatic lights?

And just because they come as standard doesn't mean they didn't cost you any money, they just didn't give you the choice. Add a bunch of these unnecessary gimmicks together and your car might be $1000 more expensive than it needs to be, heavier and with more stuff to break.

On some big expensive luxury car that has a wasteful auto and tons of unnecessary extras and gimmicks already anyway, sure fit them as standard, it won't make a difference. On something like a Corolla? Please no.

Ie bullshit feature

Also the whole 'SUV culture', worst thing to happen to the auto industry ever
>>
>>14254812
no, the ambient light sensor on the nissan is fantastic. the moment things went dark, the lights were on. quicker than you yourself could react unless you had your lights on before you entered the tunnel.

i'm not the type to waste money on brand new vehicles anyway, so no, the automatic lights wouldn't cost me anything, some cars have it, some cars don't. and even if they break.. back to manual operation like most other cars then? worse things have certainly happened
>>
>>14252818
Rain sensing gets a bad rap because some companies are really bad at it. I had an Audi that was very good, and a merc that was useless

>>
>>14258981
I'm pretty sure VTEC changes valve lift and duration, not necessarily timing.
>>
>>14258981
>i'm not good enough at math to find the ridiculously small difference between these two
Nigger you just need to be good at english to discern the difference.

Variable Valve LIFT
Variable Valve TIMING
They plainly say what they are. If you look at even a crude diagram of "how VTEC" works you see that it switches cam profiles, increasing lift and duration. Duration is a part of valve timing so therefore VTEC is both VVL and VVT.
>>
>>14252818
Light sensors are good because there are always retards who drive at night without any lights on and this prevents that.
It's not like they get in the way of the operation of the vehicle, what's the problem?
>>
>>14258981

VTEC is VVL and comes either in 2 or 3 stage designs. i-VTEC adds VVT to the mix.

>i'm not good enough at math to find the ridiculously small difference between these two
sorry, I understand the difference between lift and duration; I meant the mathematical difference in volume of air entering and leaving the cylinder. Two engines, all things being the same except one has VVL and one had VVT, I don't think you'd notice any difference between the two while driving.
