Currently I have no car, got my license a few months ago and the main reason I ain't got one yet is cause of the ridiculous insurance prices here in the UK. I'm 17 years old, from London and the cheapest car insurance quote I can get was £2,600 (3.7k usd) per year on a small ass 1.2L VW Golf.

There's no way I'm willing to pay nearly 3K GBP a year on insurance for a car that's worth less than half of that and has a shitty ass 1.2L engine in it.

>Does anyone in the UK know any way of reducing this shit? Be it legal or not, obviously I won't drive without insurance but let's say lying on something to your insurer, would it work? what are the chances of them checking and being caught? etc
>>
>>14246735
I spent $1800/year insuring my Prelude in NJ when it was my only car. Got a quote this week for just my Prelude in PA, and with more coverage too. $750/year. Same insurance company too.

>Does anyone in the UK know any way of reducing this shit?
>got my license a few months ago
Good luck getting a cheap policy anywhere when you just got your license.
>>
>>14246769

Nah, I don't mean "cheap" as in few hundread a year. I'd be more than happy to find insurance for half the price I'm being quoted which would be like 2K USD a year (1.3K GBP)

Difference is though you americans have people my age driving Mustangs, trucks and other big vehicles which are actually kinda powerful and I'm out here trying to insure a 1.2L hatchback that has like 75BHP and they wan tme to pay 4K USD for it lol.

I adjusted my insurance from liability to what I believe would be called "part coverage", meaning that in addition to the basic damage to other vehicles, injury/death and legal aid I'm insured against fire, theft, glass damage, road side assitance, damage on equipment and some other small things

The difference - I must now pay a total of $26 more... per year

PER YEAR!

I get all those extra options for basically free

1. Get a black box / telematics. If you're a new driver, this is pretty much your only option.

2. Use comparison sites, and check the independent ones like Direct Line. Find the best deal.

3. Don't put a parent on as a named driver. They've caught on to this now and just up your premiums for insuring an extra driver.

4. Raise your voluntary excess to as high as you think is doable. It'll lower your cost, but be prepared for a massive fucking bill if you damage yourself or someone else.

5. Once you've been driving for a few months with a black box, most insurers will lower your premiums if you drive well.

If you're living in London, your postcode could also be a factor. If you live in an area with a high crime rate or it's a very low income area, chances of theft and damage are higher, therefore higher premiums.

What factors into pricing? I'm:
>about to buy my first car
>Have had my license for 6 years
>Have never gotten into an accident that was my fault

Do I just call for quotes and go with the cheapest one? Is there a way my parents insurance can cover my new car too? The car I'm buying is going to cost me $2k and from 2003. I don't plan to put full coverage on it. If it gets totalled, then das it mane, since it cost me just $2k. Not gonna try and repair it, and would just get a newer car + full coverage insurance.

pls help I want my car ASAP and I need insurance before I even drive it

Just got a ticket for 53 in a 30 (cop was not correct) and I got it reduced (via lawyer/plea) to ignoring a traffic device (2 points in New York, $200 fine), which GEICO will not surcharge my rates for (they will if I get another moving violation in the next 2.5 years though). I also have to take defensive driving (which is a mandatory 10% insurance discount in NYS).

The overwhelming majority of it ($90/mo) is for liability coverage. Keeping the comp/coll at $1K/$1K with no deductible for glass is cheap.

>>14247741
In the US you never want to use roadside assistance provided by an insurance company, it goes on a report called the CLUE REPORT that almost all auto insurers use to see how many claims you've made in the past five years and then your insurance gets surcharged because you used your insurance for a $50 tow.
>>
>>14249432
risk of drivers with the car you have
safety/theft/claim rates in your zip code
in almost all states of the US, credit score - drivers with good credit pay much less than drivers with bad credit (oddly enough, no credit is even worse for auto insurance pricing than fucked up credit)
how many points/accidents/tickets you've had.

>Do I just call for quotes and go with the cheapest one?
pretty much. older cars will usually cost less for comp/coll deductibles, but may increase the rates for liability, since if you get in an accident you are more likely to get hurt (vs. something with a bajillion airbags).

you could be listed on your parents policy and then be listed as the primary driver, and it would probably be cheaper than maintaining your own insurance separately, because the odds of you getting into an accident are lower. however, you may not like the liability limits your parents maintain (they may be higher, since they probably have more to lose than a 20something).

If you get a black box have fun spending the next year staring at your speedo and being afraid to brake when people pull out infront of you as hard braking gives you a bad score.

Having a parent on the insurance always makes it cheaper.

Its included in the insurance, no plan on actually using it. I'm a member of something called "NAF", which roughly translates into "Norways Automobile Society", which provides "free" road-side assisance if you're a full paying member, so I'll be using that incase my Merc does a miniature Auschwitz
