Belts skip or break if not serviced around 100k
Chains skip if guides or tensioner aren't serviced around 100k.
What's your point op?

Do you really want to risk 100k miles on an interference + belt car? For non interference I agree it's not too different but on interference cars I much rather have a chain
>>14233744
Sexy VG
>>14233753
Thank you sir. As long as people keep up with their scheduled maintenance such as do belt every 60k its not a big deal. Please act like it needs to be done yearly or some shit.
>>14233673
Why mess with belts and chains when theres gear?
>>14233796
I bet that thing sounds fucking amazing
>>14233726
Kevlar belts arent an excuse to ignore service intervals
>>14233747
It was just a generalization. Do the recommended service for the belt at the recommended milage with quality parts and you should have no problems
>>14233808
It does. Nothing like a six cylinder diesel choir.
>>14233717
>Chains skip if guides or tensioner aren't serviced around 100k.
Is that what the subaru dealership told you?
>>14233921
Idk mate my subaru has a belt.
>>14233921
But are you going to tell me that a chain cannot skip if it isn't properly tensioned or the guide wear out? Do bmw owners do this for nothing?
Toyota Camry non interference master race here. Had a belt break at 180K. Went to Autozone, handed the man 60 bucks and 3 hours later, we are on the road again.
Timing chains are for pussys
>>14233717
>Chains skip if guides or tensioner aren't serviced around 100k.
What?
>tfw non interference
>>14233977
Anon just because your engine is from the 1800s doesn't mean everyone else drives around in "lol pushrod" mobiles also.
>gear driven underover head belt cams
>>14233747
Yes I will risk the factory intervals decided upon by the manufacturer and not some random guy on 4chan.
>>14233796
Honestly, what is the reason for not using gears? Are they that loud? Seems easy enough to adjust as well.
>pop off gear
>rotate 1 tooth
>gear goes back on
I don't get it. Why are we not funding this?
>>14234043
They are very loud. Also more expensive.
>>14234003
>implying those chains wont also last well over 100k
Change your oil fag.
>>14234043
They are loud, expensive, setting the backlash is annoying as hell, and they don't really offer anything.
>>14234041
What interference+belt car has a 100k interval? Mitsubishi?
>>14234003
explain how this isn't better
protip: you can't
my oil burning high mileage 5.7l LS1 gets similar gas mileage (20/26mpg) to our nearly brand new toyota 1.8l DOHC 4cyl (30+mpg avg)
one makes 138hp and the other makes 315hp. and the LS1 makes the same power at idle than the 4 cyl does at redline
>>14234054
Again...never said chains. If you could read I said guides and chain tensioners. These usually have a service recommendation, just like belts.
But I'm glad to see you're at least smart enough to change oil anon! Congratulations
>>14234112
Hey I'm going to stop you right there. I couldnt give less of a rats ass about some boring Chevy v8 that's crammed into everything now adays. Not a bad motor...but pushrods aren't the topic of discussion right now.
>>14234112
It doesn't matter if the engine is powerful, the japscrap is better because it doesn't have pushrods LELELELELELEL
>>14234134
>boring chevy v8
you've never been in an LS1 car
>can run 10 sec quarters with a cam and stall
400WHP N/A :)
>>14234043
Because car makers are cheap and lazy. It's all about the bottom dollar.
>>14234142
>the japscrap is better because it doesn't have pushrods LELELELELELEL
say that to my honda d15b2 that threw a rod through the block :)
>>14234156
Sounds pretty cool...I still have no interest in them. When they're swapped into every single car imaginable they loose their appeal. Like in my eyes it's just a go to engine if you care about nothing else but power, not necessarily a bad thing...but don't expect me to give a shit when you pop your hood and there's an LS there, just not cool to me anymore.
>>14234214
>. When they're swapped into every single car imaginable they loose their appeal
b-but my car came with it
>>14233950
177k for my 95
>>14234232
Even worse...that means there's a gm body around it.
Just kidding anon but everything about ls motors are just vanilla to me, even the cars they come in.

That's everything worse
>>14233673
>knife edge crank
>>14234285
you just haven't been in-car. it makes sense, they don't look that appealing until you actually drive one
then you realize all the memes about pushrods are utter nonsense. hp/l? worthless ricer shit talking
>>14234056
Why would you get backlash? Wouldn't the valve springs provide a constant resistance/pressure even under deceleration?
Also there's a hundred types of gears, including anti-backlash gears for that and helical for the noise. Cost is a good point though.
>>14234413
>cost is a good point
a Briggs and stratton lawnmower has gear driven timing..
everyone itt is failing to realize that gears are less efficient
>>14234435
>giving two shits about efficiency of a valve train
There's no way that you'd ever save even 1hp by factoring this in. Your tires being a half psi low would cause more power loss.
And that's for a single, non variable cam with a small distance from crank to valves, that takes next to no torque and runs at constant RPMs. Apples to oranges.
>>14233941
BMW owners do it because BMW wills it, king of assraping customers after their warranty expires. Tons of engines go 200k+ without a timing chain issue of any kind. Timing chain related issues are totally a possibility, but not a definite thing that will need addressing unlike belts.
>>14233740
