I live pretty far north and the winters can get nasty. I want a car that can handle a good bit of snow but I don't want to end up in a truck and I don't want to be that guy on the side of the highway, pic related.

If you want to get around just fine with no actual trouble; get anything with a normal ride height and high-tier winter tires
If you want to get around just fine even better and be able to tackle some of the rougher roads; taller-sitting car with AWD, like a Subaru Legacy/Impreza, Volvo V70 Cross Country and similar
Where exactly are you from? Could be large differences concerning what cars are actually available

infinite parts availability, 4x4 available, inexpensive maintenance, but poor fuel mileage. The fuel mileage doesn't matter much if you're a burger with $2.50/gallon gas, though.

Maybe if they weren't asking $50 grand for an Evo with 12 more horsepower than the already overpriced $36 grand version.
My family has 2 evos. They are awesome. I would not recommend them to anyone unless you are ok with paying really high maintenance fees. I work on them myself. One is an 03 the other an 08. Really cool cars that break a lot and are expensive to repair. Parts are stupid pricey.
