I'm in quite a quandary. I have the absolutely perfect SUV to take offroading, but dammit this thing is just way too clean to screw up. I mostly just use it to go camping and haul dogs and canoes, although there was an incident last summer when I had to get home after some serious overnight thunderstorms, made for some dramatic water crossings, put a few dings in the skid plates crawling over some washed out sections we didn't see through muddy water.
I'd love to scoop up a beater Sidekick or XJ, or 1st gen Pathfinder. Something to actually take to an offroad park and genuinely enjoy beating on it without sitting on pins and needles.

We were going to get her a car anyway because she's doing well in school and will start driving soon. Instead of buying something else for her figured we could give her the XJ since it's reliable and somewhat cheap to run etc.
Also if I kept both I'd have 5 cars, and I don't have room for that many and don't feel like paying insurance for all of them

You can still tastefully mod your truck offroad it and not destroy it. 90% of the time if there is something you cant get through or over you can go around. You dont always have to take the hardest way, but it can be fun.

I might not be as hard core as some guys but when i go out i rely on my vehicle to get me there and back again. If it looks hairy i have someone spot me. If i dont have one i dont do it. But i tend to walk any trail i think i have a chance of rolling or getting seriously stuck on, so i usually have a good idea what to expect when i go forward.

You guys are definitely right. I'm going to make an honest effort to get out to an offroad park this summer, it'll coincide nicely with replacing the worn General Grabber HTS highway rubber with some flavor of A/T. My other biggest impediment is the factory hitch, I don't want to take it off because I tow and haul a bike rack on it pretty regularly. Totally ruins departure angle, you can hear it scrape in the video as well.

It was all good fun just blasting through some little streams that welled up from the hard rain, but then that big crossing where we scraped is basically a big concrete slab laid across a dry creek bed. The current washed away the approach on the other end, digging a surprisingly deep trench. Lesson for the future, always walk a water crossing before just going for it, it could have ended up much worse than simply a little ding in my front skid plate (pic related). I pussied out on that last crossing, it was deeper and siltier. With 3 other people in the car that just wanted to get home in one piece, and without another vehicle to help out with a recovery, I turned tail and found a different way out of the forest.

Haha well I already carry my full toolset, recovery gear, and even some spares (coil, injector, rear driveshaft). That and some extra fluids. I think a spare front axle would round things out nicely. The only reason I carry around a whole rear shaft is I have a spare (experimenting with solving a driveline vibration), and I figure it's quicker and easier than a u joint replacement.
