A VW Golf . They're cheap , reliable , inexpensive to maintain and fix and have a decent interior . Getting a Golf V would be pretty cash , but at 5k it's a push to get good one . The small diesels kind of suck and have no power , the gas engines are ok , if you can get one with a proper 2L and a 6MT you'll be a happy man . Don't buy automatics because they are criminaly bad , only the newer DSGs are decent enough , but a good Manuel will still beat any auto for MPGs .
What about the Audi A4 or passat?

Don't fall for the golf maymay. Get a Mazda 3 instead, but look out for rust.

Older ones were built to last and let's be honest if your looking for a car for less than 5k your not gonna maintain it anyway. Might as well drive something comfortable that will work for a while longer.
