Does anyone have any experience with these machines? How often do you have to service them?
Personally I like the EVO x better because of looks and interior but the STI is more reliable...

All you're going to find is salvage titles, fraudulent clean titles and ones that were beaten on worse than redneck trailer park wife.
Save yourself the headache and just buy one new... If you're set on used then your ass has got to be thorough as fuck. Talking inspecting every last inch for accident repair, mods, looking up VIN info, test drives to see boost levels, compression test by an outside mechanic.

WTF are you talking about, when I had my 2011 evo MR there wasn't a whole of expensive maintenance. I had the car from 0 till 33k miles and in that time I replaced 1 set of tires due to a puncture in the sidewall, 1 set of brake pads and had 1 slightly higher than normal cost transmission flush because of the DTC. Over all the car was very cheap to keep on the road with just regular oil changes every 4000 miles.
If the OP got just a GSR evo he wouldn't have to worry about the transmission flush since that model only has a 5-speed standard.

STI Gearbox is hard to kill. The 5 speed on the WRX is shit tough.
I've got an 09 sti, awesome car, fun to drive especially in the snow and rain. Stiff suspension and shit gas mileage but that's expected. Honestly they're both the same thing, get whatever you plan to buy inspected first though, and vin check that bitch. If the seller says he never beat it, they're lying fuckers. I bought mine because it had a clean vin, all maintenance records, extended warranty from Subaru and its stock. Basically watch out for modded, beat to shit or neglected examples. Don't beat on them cold would also be some good advice.

My experience with those cars used is that they're getting sold/traded in because they're fucked. 99.8% of owners are ken block wannabes that drive the cars to the ground. Buy new when possible if you're set on one of those or be willing to put the money into repairing whatever falls apart.

Subaru might be cheaper if doing everything yourself, everything in a Subaru engine compartment is a pain to get to and labor intensive. The Evo's (superior) AWD system is more complex and would be more expensive to work on.
