I wish they didn't cost so much, here you can get a gsx-r750 on road for 14.2

and I think a zx-636 is about 16.5 for a new one.

I mean it makes sense, it's a newer model, traction control and stuff but I don't really want a 600 for that, shit I could spend the price difference on the 750 and get some braided lines, maybe a bazzaz z-fi unit (which has TC), quickshifter etc.

Hey guys, I was looking into purchasing a dirtbike. I have rode my motorcycle all around the streets, except I want something to take off road but also be agile.

I live in a town surrounded by the forest, so that is mainly why I want to get a dirtbike. If I ever get in trouble, I want to be able to ditch cops (or at least not be bumper to bumper with them) from the speed of the bike. That being said, I obviously want to be able to drive this thing on the road.

Recommendations?

DRZ-400
690 Enduro-R if you have the $$
XR650r
>>
>>14161064
Well last time I bought my bike he wouldn't budge much so I gave him pretty much what he wanted. I realized soon after that I shouldn't have done that because the bike was shit and I could have waited for a better deal.
Last time I went to look at a bike I did what I said here >>14161040. I offered what I thought it was worth and he gave me a counter-offer. I declined. A few couple later the CL ad was changed and his asking price was reduced to what his counter-offer was. I messaged him and told him my offer still stands, but he just gave me another counter-offer. I declined again.

Don't give more than you think the bike is worth. Try to go extra jew at first if that's what you want, but don't buy it for too much money because there will always be more of them for sale eventually.

>>
>>14161106
He says he's ridden his bike on the streets a lot so I assumed he has some idea of what to do when it comes to riding- I know offroading is a completely different beast from street riding but at least he knows what the controls of the bike are, lel

Also from what I hear, the 690 enduro isn't a very intimidating bike. torky as fuqq but still, my friends who have ridden them say that it's a pretty "calm" bike
>>14161097
But yeah anon disregard my advice and get a 250cc DS first
>>
>>14161092
the bike's asking price is $1000 but it has expired tags that cost $600. $1600 for a plated dirtbike. it's still a decent deal at asking price, so it will be kind of difficult.
>>14161097
you should be able to plate a dirtbike somewhat easily. wr450, crf450x, klx450r, etc. these are better offroad, which is sounds like what you are geared toward.
>>
>>14161110
XR650r is widely regarded as far better in terms of speed, power delivery, and general construction than the L. It's also way more hektik and not street legal off the floor, you need to do that aftermarket
>>
>>14161110
>XR650R
Alloy frame
Water cooled
Essentially a factory race bike
"lightweight"

>XR650L
Steel frame
Air cooled
Factory dual sport

>>
>>14161130
>>14161126
Ah, quite a difference. Sort of stupid that they took it off of the Honda website.
>>
>>14161137
Just know that IIRC, the XRR is kickstart only and has some pretty limited luggage options unless you're into nigger rigging stuff. The kickstart only may not seem like a big deal, but you might be singing a different tune after trying to kick one of those monsters to life. If you've got the chest hair though, the 650r is definitely the way to go. It's got like 15 more hp than the 650L off the floor as well

I don't typically recommend a small bike for a new street rider, but it's almost imperative when learning to ride on dirt. The threshold for things going shitty is a lot smaller and having a dirtbike that is happiest at 60mph+ isn't smart

if you had started saving when you started this retarded meme, you'd have enough to buy a brand new grom and all sorts of ricer aftermarket parts for it by now

Hey, the dirtbike guy again. I was wondering what one of these will set me back. I got about a good 10k to spend on it, but if I can get good performance for less, that would be awesome (about to head into college, would like to eat things other than ramen).

Also, I have been riding a Ducati Diavel (used) which is no sports bike, but has some kick to it on the road. Now that I am getting a dirtbike, what would you recommend as the cc of the thing? I am reading what you guys are saying and how a 450cc or a 650cc with rock my ass to a new galaxy. Would a 450 be good for me if I learn it carefully? Keep in mind, I got to run from cops in this shit.
>>
>>14161151

You're going to get seriously hurt or killed. Get a beater 250, learn the fundamentals on it for a while, and THEN get something to hoon on and make poor decisions with
>>
>>14161188
Not hom but not hard at all, i may be a bad person to ask because i have been riding on dirt for 18 years but from my experience a 250 is just as fast as a 450 in a straight line up until 100km/h, the 450 is a lot more forgiving though because you do not have to be flooring the thing at full throttle fucking everywhere.

If anything the most dangerous dirt bikes are 125's.

Why are road bike riders bigger normies than cagers are when it comes to dirt bikes in other countries?

Over here you learn to ride on a dirt bike for a good 5 years before ever riding a road bike and the only reason you do that is because you are too broken to ride a dirt bike anymore..

In all seriousness, it's not that hard- but like CC81PT said, the threshold for error is a lot lower on the dirt. There's a lot more shit to smash into and slip on while riding innawoods.

It's actually not totally 100% effective the other way too, I mean at a basic primal level maybe but I mean I started on dirt and transitioned to road and I was surprised at how little actually did transfer over, you still need to learn to ride the "road" way the same as you'll need to learn to ride the "dirt" way transitioning in the opposite.

The body position, the braking, the use of the throttle is all very different.

unless you're casey stoner in which case just wrench on that shit and drift it uleh

I'm not gonna lie, the big reason I want to replace my 250 is to get a bike with an i4. I want that sound. I want that howl. I also want something with more pull so it can go up hills faster. I do live on an escarpment, so some of my favorite local country roads have some hills on them.
Even then, I'm looking at maximum 800cc, and a standard/sport-standard configuration.
It's a damn shame I couldn't get any 4 cylinder 250s. They sound nice.

That makes me feel better about only barely scraping knee a few times when I was at the kart track. I hope to get better next time

Still though the majority of riders spend 90+% of the time on the road, and you can't really do that on the road. Even if you were ballsy enough to ride with that little of a safety margin, a lot of 250s would have to work really hard to keep up on corner exit since most corners are 45mph+.

I mean I get what he's saying but yeah you in general need "tight" road corners to get your knee down on the road, in particular the ones near me where I can do it have you at about 45-50 mph at the apex if you're going fast.

Any faster and you have to be going ridiculously quick to get your shit down.

>>14161432
I don't really know what to think about the 07's, I like the engine so i would recommend them only if you're not planning on hitting the twisties much or ever going to a track day because the lack of preload and spongy digging feeling is just fucking weird imo.

I like the MT-07, and my only lamentation about it is the retro package XSR is only available in 900cc in US/Canada. But since the XSR is literally just an MT-09 with no fairing, different tank, and headlight, an MT-07 is right up my alley.
Except for being a twin. But it's a very nice sounding twin.
>>
>>14161443
Yeah very true, my main complaint about the bike when i rode my brothers was that the back wheel comes off the ground under heavy braking so it is doing pretty much nothing when you are trying to slow down, that and you get head shakes that only stop when you give it a bit of a wrap on the throttle if you hit a bump around a corner while the bike is leant right over.

First thing i would recommend is getting new springs put in the shocks if you ride like a bit of a moron, if you cruise though i wouldnt even touch their suspension, soft dampening is nice in towns and just cruising.
>>
So with damping rod forks you can just change the oil viscosity to change damping rates?
But in cartridge forks you are supposed to revalve them? What happens if you put thicker oil instead of revalving a fork?
>>
>>14161479
yeah the mt-07 is fine for what I see buying it around where I live, which is muppets who just want something that looks edgy and feels fast to go around the city and make a big noise having "da fastest LAMS bro"

I don't see them around the twisties and I don't expect to see them.

I would definitely rate them as a commuting day to day bike, they are comfy, very very VERY easy to ride around at low speed and do tight maneuvers on and the engine is a pearl like I said.

I just don't rate them as cornering machines...at all.

get a cb400sf and when you get bored with the power put a turbo on it and gain death by throttle with the added bonus of tstu tstu tstu.
One of the easiest bikes to put a turbo on apparently, all the shit about turbo charging them tends to be on Japanese sites and forums though.
>>
>>14161499
I thought forced induction didn't work well with carbs tho because the positive air pressure makes the venturi effect go away so it can't draw fuel from the float bowl? Do you have to get special carbs for turbos?

cb400sf's are all FI since 2008

that being said there is something called "blow through carbs" which allows you to turbo carb stuff.

you need a special everything, the turbo is exhaust fed and feeds back into the air box, fair few different companies make different exhaust headers for doing it, few different styles if you are really interested have a look into it, japs are crazy about their 400cc bikes.

compromises are made on every bike. i think it's a fantastic bike if all you need to change is forks and exhaust (exhaust being essential on every bike).
>>

Funny you say that, me and my brother have tested this thoroughly.
From a standing start my cb400 flogs it, (cb400 leads all the way, has a higher top speed too)

From 100km/h accelerating hard, again the cb400 wins and both of us agree you can get the cb through the corners faster than the mt07, neither of us can catch the cb400 while riding the mt07 through tight twisties.

>>14161955
there's a heap of things that go into what makes a camera good looking and you don't have specs for all them.

Chiefly is dynamic range, which is basically how bright and how dark it can see at the same time, this is what stops the sky from just being blown out white on some cameras while you can still see the detail on others.

The other ones are pixel binning, ISO performance and bitrate/codec, there's also rolling shutter effect but that one doesn't show up on action cameras much.

The way the sensor produces 1080p video is always going to be different, a 1920x1080 sensor will be sharper making 1920x1080 video than a 16 mp sensor that is picking and choosing bits to make it's 1080p video.

then there's the bitrate and compression, iso (noise) attributes and the quality of the lens attached to the sensor itself.

Basically the only way to judge an action cameras quality of footage is to get real world uncompressed sample videos and compare it yourself.

I weigh 240.
The maximum weight capacity on a 250 is 300, including pillion, gear, rider, and cargo.
Keep in mind this capacity is probably not the true capacity of the motorcycle but instead a number to keep you fairly safe.

I managed to get the bike out to eighty miles an hour for more than fifteen minutes on the highway. Yeah, you will affect the performance of the motorcycle on such a small bike. But honestly, that shouldn't be your biggest concern. Just get on two wheels for cheap, go on google maps and make some routes, or on motoplaner.de.
Ride some of those routes, ask for anons to share some of their rides if you live in their country.
Have some fun, build dem skills.

i figured we'd just find a map or to and wander around the area and see how we do.
im not much for preplanning vacations since then they feel too structured to really just relax

ill keep an eye on the weather for next weekend and see if things will pan out. i went up yesterday and the snow is strong enough to hold up a car in places and deep enough to put you in past your knees
>>
>>14162053
I'm not really concerned about speed at the moment, really more like stability and not too much wear on the suspension and the like.

Do you wear a lot of gear? Much trouble fitting in shit?
>>
tfw its too cold to ride

ATGATT, homie. I have an advantage in Canada because it never gets past 40c here. So I can even wear full black leathers and it will only suck if I have to stay still for a long time.
Which only happens in places you don't want to ride anyway.
No, I don't have trouble fitting into my gear because I went to a tailor and got my measurements taken. Then I bought gear online.

As for stability, a small 250cc twin like my Ninja has a redline at 14kRPM. When you get to 10k RPM you can start to feel the bike vibrating in your hands.
That's not a loss of stability, it's just a minor discomfort from the engine exploding so much to propel you forward.
You'll only need to worry about stability if you're building custom motorcycles or if you're riding a really old bike. Like one from the 70s or before.

As for wear, nigga it's a Japanese bike. The country will turn to Fury Road before an uncrashed Japanese bike wears out.
Suspension is fairly cheap, doesn't wear fast at all.

Thanks for the cautionary. I don't think I would want to buy a 250 or 300 for a season just to get used to higher revving sport bikes. But I will be sure to take it easy till i get the hang of the different mechanics.

Thanks /dbt/
>>
>>14162127
not worried about fixing it myself if it's not.

It's only a focus issue depending on what typical distances you'll want to be focusing on, particulary it seems to be the quadcopter guys who don't like the close focus but my bike will only be a meter from the lens at most.

so we'll see.
>>
>>14162126
Oh yes, and one other thing.
The EX250 is a sport-standard, and that's an important distinction to make.
Pure sports bikes have you hunched forward like you're racing. They're made for that position.
A sport-standard is a regular motorcycle with a neutral seating position that has a sportbike fairing.
Literally the best of both worlds until you drop it at 0 mph because a cop went through a light with his siren on and you were turning right legally.
Then stopped to ask if you were okay.
Dick obviously had more important shit to do.
And I cracked my damn fairing.

How do you guys feel about clutchless upshifting?

>I hope they have fixed the focus issue
i think they did, with a firmware upgrade.
>>
>>14162145
end of the day if I don't feel like fixing it myself, australian consumer law is pretty clear and if it's out of focus that would be pretty clearly not "fit for purpose" and I can just return it or get it swapped for one that doesn't have it.
>>
>>14162126

I have a SJ5000+ that I don't use. It has quality video and its night video was surprisingly good too.

Its ok but it can crash randomly and it gets really hot. When you first turn it on you have to wait for it to "warm up" for about 10seconds before recording or getting into menus. If you dont it just shutsdown.
>>
>>14162145
I think it was more of a fixed focus issue. Some people opened up the can and adjusted the lens focus manually.
>>
>>14161673
Well I couldn't find the damned C-spanner size in my service manual nor in the Malaysian owners manual .pdf, nor in any fucking forum posting.

I did find out that older toolsets for honda's CB600 has a C-spanner that'll fit along with the sparkplug socket and the various wrenches of questionable quality. So I plan on ordering that from Partzilla for $20.

I also found out that I can get the bolts and chain-cover for my bike for another $20.

So 2 things: $20 for a CBR chain cover/guard a good price? Any issues ordering from Partzilla?

I use to adjust mine with a long flat head screwdriver.

I saw that some people get along just fine using that, but I also read that a few people gouged the hell out of stuff doing that too.
