Have 2 of them myself a 1ga and a 1gb, this is not inaccurate. I'll go take some pictures of the one in the garage.

What do you guys think of fwd 2nd gen DSM as a first car?

There are some really good condition ones for cheap here
Want a fun dependable cheap DD that I can track day with when I can
Seeing what alternatives there are to Miatas , 4g and 5g Prelude, Del Sol, and 6th gen civics
Where are the DSM in that line up
How do they handle
>>
>>14148915

I wouldn't buy one that wasn't all wheel drive, you'll have trouble putting the power down with even light mods
>>
>>14149018
Those are really rare though
Darn
>>
>>14149026
Even the AWD don't handle well, cornering leaves much to be desired they're good for going fast in a straight line not much else

I had a DSM. It was a 97' Dodge Avenger. It has the DOHC v6 Mitsubishi engine and the same interior as an eclipse. It was fat, and slow. Good torque off the line, but nothing special.

Now, 12 years later I have a 2008 eclipse special edition with the factory aero kit. I like it, fun car, easy on gas, slow in a straight line but good upper RPM power with on the interstate, easy to jump from 70 - 90mph on interstate driving.

In this day and age 100% honesty DSM's aren't worth owning anymore unless you have a specific love for them like I do.
They were worth owning but now clean well maintained examples are becoming over priced and their aftermarket is finally starting to diminish for dsm specific parts. Especially when it comes to transmission parts for example. Mitsubishi trans parts for dsms are starting to no longer be in extreme mass production which is causing more rebuilders to pull out of the business or prices to skyrocket.
Same thing happened to the stock mitsu turbos a few years back. It's only going to get worse so it's going to get less affordable to build them

As of the moment they're still decent to get parts for and have lots of aftermarket and are cheap t build. However the hill for dsms and their aftermarket has been crested and is starting to go downhill. So it's just now a matter of if you really want to own one and deal with the hurdles that will come with owning one in todays world.

The fattest 4 banger on a quarter mile is a 4g63 in a 3rd gen Eclipses
>>
>>14149547
That's why we need to give thanks to Buschur Racing and Shepherd racing for building specific parts for the DSM cars
>>
>>14149377
The Avenger didn't have a DOHC engine. It had an SOHC 6G73 meant for family sedans.
>>
>>14149547
Also Mitsubishi parts support in the USA is straight garbage thanks to MMNA not giving a fuck about the dealer network that needs a whole lot of fixing.

Buy a Civic and shut the fuck up.
>>
>>14149078
no because its a 420a

Also my rear calipers were fucked, so i'm waiting to do that and the lines that blew

then im going to waste thousands of dollars and waste hundreds of hours repairing rust

and then maybe I will buy a 4g63 and watch as my crank does the harlem shake

>>
>>14148409
I've had a few Eclipse, I'll talk about my experience with each gen.

Starting with my old 1999 Eclipse. Great little car, my second favorite generation of Eclipse. Was super reliable, only repair it ever needed was a thermostat and that was like $12. I bought it with 220k km on the engine and it ran perfectly. Bought it looking pretty rough, it was blue with paint fade everywhere. I stripped it myself and painted it white, first time painting anything lol. Discovered it was a deep purple originally, wish it had the original paint when I bought it as its one of my favorite colors. The only real issue with this car was the build quality, especially the door handles. All and all my second favorite eclipse and loved owning it.
>>
>>14152332
The second Eclipse I owned, and my least favorite was my 3rd gen 2003 Spyder. I never owned a convertible before and I doubt I'll own another.

This car was again very reliable. It was a much different car to the 2nd gen, didn't feel like a successor to the 2g Eclipse. It was a much nicer car in regards to materials, but lacking compared to the 4g. Driving the car it felt more like a touring car and not like a tuner. I did enjoy the car, but it was much different. For repairs the car needed a motor mount, which was pretty cheap and easy to install. I did replace the water pump and timing belt as well but that was just general maintenance. I will say that even in its convertible form the chassis felt more solid than the 2g, though Mitsubishi claimed that going from the 2g to the 3g they increased chassis strength 30% so it makes sense. Chrysler ended up taking the chassis and extending it 2" for use in its Sebring.
>>
>>14152381
My 3rd Eclipse, a 2008 4g. This has definitely been my favorite of all the Eclipses I've owned. Mitsubishi claims that they looked to the 2g Eclipse when designing the 4g and it shows not only in its exterior design but how the car feels when your driving it.

Visually I loved my 2g, so I was always drawn to the 4g. The roof line coming down to the round ass end, the low wide stance, it's all in the 4g. Interior is visually different, gone is the cockpit dash that wraps around the driver. Beyond that though the car feels like a 2g when sitting in it, driving. Seating position is low, requiring your legs to extend out and the seat to be tilted back. Handling feels like the 2g but much more solid than either the 2g or 3g. Materials are above the 3g with soft touch material across the entire dash, most the doors, leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter feel great. The seats have tons of bolstering and are really excellent. If you like the 2g and want a more reliable, modern version that has improved build quality this is the car. The engine having Mivec is a lot of fun getting into lift, I can understand why honda owners love their vtec now lol.

My 4g specifically came with many modifications and handles very well. It has a full tein suspension, eibach strut braces, upgraded sway bars, injen CAI, Flow Master catback exhaust, and a light weight under drive pulley.

I am an idiot for buying my Talon, but I do admit the car did steal my heart very quickly

All the terrible rust that is probably unfixable will be my undoing, but god help me I will try armed with only my friends drive on rack and his snap on welder and the mighty support of this page
