No, it's absolutely a Mustang when you consider the marketing of a cheap, sporty, car, with an extensive option list made by Ford from the parts bin and aimed at young adults. What became the Probe would also have fit the concept better at the time. The current Mustang has strayed too far from the concept imo, being almost bespoke since it shares so little with other Fords which imperils its future

with inflation $20k in today's worth is about $8k back in 1980. A foxbody back in 1980 costed aaround $7k, so pretty damn close.

When I was 13 a Camaro was just under $5000 and a Corvette was $10,000. I'm 52, so that was the 70s. Both those examples were the desirable optioned cars. A Plymouth Duster with a 6 cylinder was around $3000. I know, because we bought a purple one.
